Part 2: Northern Destinies
Main - Beacon Hill to Spire In the Icefield
10. Beacon Hill A
October 1987-January 1988
Background and summary: while trying to find its feet in a new
and strange land, the Party is visited by an old friend: Balin.
He tells them of a massive war that broke out in the south
shortly after the Party left, as a small land called Rima sent army
after army of Hobgoblins - bolstered by cybergenetic "Invincibles"
- out in all directions. He also tells of a Prophecy that foretells
of some individuals possibly having a significant role in stopping
the invasion...these individuals are likely members of this
Party! Pentheslieah's rings, given to Party members after Rahasia,
seem to be some sort of trigger. In any event, the Party
now have to find and gather 6 Orbs and 6 Swords, but have no idea
where to start, though they realize one of the Orbs slipped
through their fingers at Cone Peak. Meanwhile, they hear of strange
goings-on in the nearby mountains, and seeking something
to do, go and investigate. While the Party is underground exploring,
the surface is overrun by the Riman invaders, and the Party
finds itself trapped behind enemy lines after emerging from a truly
bizarre complex.
Starting members(from Lost
Island of Castanamir): Dwalin(WrC-3/F-3), Penthesileah(F-4),
Trenellan(Cvr-4), Judah(A-3), Lorithen(R-2/I-2)
| Jan 17 486 |
Balin shows up, and tells Party of developments in
the southlands. A second party had to go in and clean out
Opster Woods, as this group hadn't finished the job. War
is sweeping the continent. This Party has a role to play
in perhaps ending it, but nobody has a clue what that might
be. Balin then heads off once more.
Meanwhile Drustan is out finding a new recruit: Kevin
Trox(F-2) joins.
|
| Jan 18 |
Valsein(MU-4) joins, tells of strange lights appearing
in a mountain pass to the west.
Wanting no part of prophecies, Drustan and Kevin
leave (and wind up in Night's
Dark Terror A).
|
| Jan 22 |
Arrive at source of lights - 3 towers
in the middle of the mountains. Meet and kill a few Ogres. |
| Jan 23 |
Check out one of the towers and kill
a few more Ogres. |
| Jan 24 |
The other two towers prove just as
uninformative as the first, but provide more Ogres to fight. |
| Jan 25 |
Party tries to enter a large cave nearby
and meet 6 very tough Orcs; Trenellan killed and
Valsein clobbered. |
| Jan 27 |
Penthesileah flies (somehow) to Ballydoon.
Trenellan raised. |
| Jan 28 |
Rest of Party arrive at Ballydoon and
sacks out for days. Carter(NrC-2) joins during this
break. |
| Feb 11 |
Return to complex and wade into cave,
battle undead. Trenellan loses a level to a Wight. |
| Feb 12 |
Continue exploring. Valsein loses
a level for some reason - trap? |
| Feb 13 |
Easily defeat "Necro-Man".
Against the odds, Lorithen finds a trap on a door; Valsein
casts Enlarge on door to gain entry. A Vampire awaits
within but is slain without problem.(!)
|
| Feb 14 |
Black and white tiles on floor provide all kinds of puzzlement;
in fact, the colours mean nothing.
Somehow, Trenellan and Valsein get their levels restored.
|
| Feb 15 |
Valsein suddenly departs for surface and, unknown to Party,
sets up a "gate" to allow a Devil access to complex...
and Party.
Dwalin's armour teleports him outside; he runs right into
the invading army and is lucky to escape.
On re-entering complex, Dwalin triggers Valsein's gate far
too early, and summons a Devil. Dwalin ends up feebleminded,
Valsein ends up insane, and Trenellan ends up dead; Trenellan
killed. Valsein's role in creating the gate would never
be revealed (though some had strong suspicions).
Penthesileah and Lorithen walk to a nearby Elvish community
and return with reinforcements: 16 Elves.
Dwalin gets his mind back, then he and Judah try to build
some sort of defensive wall that is soon overrun.
Valsein stripped of all possessions, while some of the Elves
go off to look for more help.
|
| Feb 16 |
Everyone wakes up having had strange dreams, ranging from
White Dragons to Drustan to various.
Lorithen and Carter both gain levels from their dreams; Carter
is also quested to do (something).
Dwalin takes 5 of the Elves into the complex; one Elf killed
by a trap.
|
| Feb 17 |
A defenseless bear is the Party's only
victim this day. |
| Feb 18 |
Party has had enough and decides to head west to Cambi, as
the battleline is between them and Ballydoon.
Jumped by an enemy patrol: 4 Goblins, 5 Hobgoblins, 2 Humans(F-4,
NrC-3), and 1 "Invincible" in mid-afternoon. Penthesileah
killed; most of the rest of Party clobbered: a 34-round
combat only resolves when Drustan(!) somehow gets summoned
to the scene, kills the Invincible in 2 swings, and disappears.
Party conducts extensive forensic studies on the slain Invincible
for the rest of the day, then fly away.
Mugged by Ogres while camping that evening; decide to travel
overnight.
|
| Feb 20 |
Travelling by night and resting by day; during this day Party
watches a huge army of Giants, Bugbears, and Kobolds pass
beneath their cliffside camp.
That night, Party encounters a Mountain Giant and fools it
into ignoring them.
|
| Feb 22 |
Arrive at Cambian border; escorted
by guards to town of Llennyth. |
| Feb 23 |
Penthesileah raised. Trenellan
resurrected. Valsein gets her sanity back. |
| Feb 27 |
Treasury completed. Carter retires
with his share soon after this. |
Surviving members: Dwalin(WrC4-/F4), Penthesileah(F-4), Trenellan(Cvr-4),
Judah(A-4), Lorithen(R-3/I-3), Valsein(MU-4),
Carter(NrC-3)
New members: Valsein, Carter
Retirees: Carter(dies later)
Casualties: (Trenellan twice - raised, then resurrected; Penthesileah
- raised)
Continuing party(to Beacon Hill B): Dwalin, Penthesileah,
Trenellan, Judah, Lorithen, Valsein
11. Beacon Hill B
February-March 1988
Background and summary: the invasion continues to sweep
north, and the Party remains unsure what their role is to be. So,
to fill time, they return to the mountains to do two things:
one, to finish exploring the complex they just left, as it still
appears to be active, and two, to try and determine what
that army of Giants and so on is doing, and whether it is part of
the invasion or is someone's attempt at resistance. They
fail at the second, but succeed beyond anyone's expectations at
the first, as the mountain complex gives up one of the 6
Orbs from a level the Party missed completely on their previous
visit.
Starting members(from Beacon Hill A):
Dwalin(WrC4-/F4), Penthesileah(F-4), Trenellan(Cvr-4), Judah(A-4),
Lorithen(R-3/I-3), Valsein(MU-4)
| Mar 4 486 |
Party puts out a call for recruits
and gets a Bard: Soridar(B3) joins. |
| Mar 19 |
By this time, both Dwalin and Penthesileah
have hired henches; Tabatha Greenbuck(NtC-1) and Helga
Hammerfoot(F-1) join. |
| Mar 20 |
Everyone's training complete, big discussion
on what to do next. |
| Mar 21 |
Balin drops by for a visit with
his usual bad news about the war. When told about the army
of Giants etc. the Party saw in the mountains, he asks them
to go back and find out what they're up to, and whether they
are part of an organized resistance to the invasion or not.
Party agrees, and sets off. |
| Mar 23 |
Arrive at Giants' camp in a mountain
pass. Judah sneaks in after dark and lights a few buildings
on fire, just for kicks; he is shocked to find Drow in the camp
and is almost caught, but flees back to Party. |
| Mar 24 |
During the night, Party walks up to camp and asks permission
to pass through. They get it, but are carefully scrutinized
as they pass by the Drow, who are still looking for Judah.
He, invisible, is hiding in the middle of the Party, hoping
their magic possessions will mask his presence. It works,
and the Party gets in some good reconnoitering on their way
through, though they never do figure out why the army is even
there at all.
Make camp for the day on a high ridge overlooking camp.
After dark, Penthesileah flies everyone down; Giants take
a few pot-shots at her but miss.
|
| Mar 25 |
Meet a local Ranger during the night, who warns of a Hobgoblin
camp farther up the valley.
Party moves on and finds this camp, carefully skirts it,
and run right into a patrol of 3 Goblins, 2 Hobgoblins, and
an Invincible. Another extremely long combat; Judah and Lorithen
take on the Hobgoblins while Penthesileah, Dwalin, and Valsein
take on the rest, and Soridar watches.
Rest through day, then harrassed by 4 Hobgoblins in evening.
Fed up with this, Penthesileah and Valsein generate some
avalanches and block the pass.
|
| Mar 26 |
Reach the complex in morning and sack
out through day with 9 Elves and a Human. |
| Mar 27 |
Into complex. A more careful search than last time reveals
a hidden door to a new level, Party enters.
Judah and Penthesileah each lose a level against a Wraith.
Party finds an enchanted Broom and spends ages trying to
make it fly; it was a Broom of Protection +1!
Lots of fun with an anti-gravity hall until Soridar finds
a deadly trap the hard way: Soridar killed.
A curse on a book turns Lorithen against the Party; Valsein
puts her and Penthesileah to sleep.
Party finds an Orb, unexpectedly. Orb restores levels to
Penthesileah and Judah. Then, a racetrack for flying chairs
generates some fun that soon turns into a spell fight: Lorithen
causes Valsein to crash, Valsein charges, everyone jumps in.
By the time the dust settles, Tabatha is the only character
standing and free to act!
Party gets it together in time to defeat a Lich-in-making.
|
| Mar 28 |
Purpose of this complex finally becomes
apparent: it's designed to harness electricity from lightning
and use it as a power source. With this in mind, and not wanting
it to fall into Hobgoblin hands, the Party starts laying waste
to every scrap of machinery it finds. |
| Mar 29 |
Party finds yet another whole
floor to the complex, previously missed; however, they get bored
with a hall of endless doors, turn around, and leave the place
for days. |
| Apr 1 |
War front passes over Party's location
yet again; Party lays low. |
| Apr 3 |
Party has another go at the complex.
Penthesileah loses another level, this time to a Wight. More
exploring. |
| Apr 6 |
3 Ghouls trap Dwalin in an elevator
room; Dwalin killed before Penthesileah and Valsein can
reach him. With this, Tabatha is given full member status by
the Party. |
| Apr 8 |
Lorithen blinded by something, and
waves of Ghouls make life miserable for Party. |
| Apr 9 |
Party gets teleported somehow to Wotansburg,
far to the north of where they were. Here, they find someone
else has appeared with them: Fimble Flumph(NrC-3) joins,
from Trey Hill. |
| Apr 10 |
During treasury appraisal, Judah loses
his mind but is cured by Orb. Penthesileah also gets her level
back yet again, and Dwalin raised. |
| Apr 13 |
Treasury done, and Helga retires. |
Surviving members: Dwalin(WrC-4/F-4), Penthesileah(F-4), Trenellan(Cvr-4),
Lorithen(R-3/I-3), Judah(A-5),
Valsein(MU-4), Fimble(NrC-3), Tabatha(NtC-2),
Helga(F-2)
New members: Soridar, Tabatha, Helga, Fimble(from Trey
Hill)
Retirees: Helga
Casualties: Soridar; (Dwalin - raised)
Continuing party(to King's Quest):
Dwalin, Penthesileah, Trenellan, Lorithen, Judah, Valsein, Fimble,
Tabatha
So what was that Giant army all about?
The Hobgoblin invasion caught others than just the "kindred"
races (Humans, Hobbits, Elves, etc.) off guard: the Drow, who for
a long time had been harbouring designs on doing something similar,
were also caught unawares, and were extremely annoyed that someone
else had beaten them to their own idea. So some very strange alliances
began to form, as the Drow sent representatives to the surface to
organize resistance. This served a double purpose for the Drow;
it slowed up the Hobgoblins, and it killed off some of the surface-dwelling
scum as well. The army of Giants, Bugbears, Kobolds, and the like
that the Party encountered had been hurriedly put together by the
Drow that almost caught Judah, and would ultimately turn out to
be a major thorn in the Hobgoblins' side that summer as it was able
to keep the invaders out of the mountains for months. By fall the
Drow had left, and without their leadership the army fell apart;
fortunately, by that time the Hobgoblins had bigger things to worry
about.
It would be several years before the Party would realize the real
threat was not the Hobgoblins, but the Drow.
15. King's Quest
March-May 1988
Background and summary: by now, the Party have learned that
Penthesileah is destined to become Queen, of somewhere, but
first her future King needs to be found. To accomplish this, the
Party set off on an extended quest that would ultimately involve
a string of small adventures. The first of these involves heading
out west and taking some things from Krell, a well-known
robber baron. To make things interesting, a second party is after
the same goal, and they would prove far more dangerous than
Krell himself.
Starting members(from Beacon Hill B):
Dwalin(WrC-4/F-4), Penthesileah(F-4), Trenellan(Cvr-4),
Lorithen(R-3/I-3), Judah(A-5), Valsein(MU-4), Fimble(NrC-3),
Tabatha(NtC-2)
| Apr 24 486 |
Trenellan calls for his warhorse, and
heads off to find it. |
| May 1 |
Party arrives in Wurgen, on the north
coast. |
| May 3 |
Trenellan arrives with his fine new
steed. |
| May 14 |
Arrive in Widdershyn, and head west
toward Krell's holding. |
| May 17 |
Meet and clobber 3 nasty Ents, then
take on 2 Wyverns; Valsein almost killed. |
| May 18 |
Penthesileah loses her mind, for some
reason. Balin drops by, and sets her right before leaving
yet again. Penthesileah and others beginning to suspect her
occasional problems are due to deaths elsewhere of those bearing
one of her rings. |
| May 19 |
8 Ogres provide little opposition other than clobbering Lorithen.
A high-level Nature Cleric "Eveyd" and a bunch
of animated trees give Party a much rougher time of it; only
Judah and Tabatha remain above 0 h.p., but everyone survives.
|
| May 20 |
Party recovers just enough to survive
being whaled on by a Dragon; they kill it, but not without trouble. |
| May 21 |
A couple of Giants wade into the still-recovering
Party; Lorithen killed. |
| May 23 |
Lisse Tarimalin(F-4/MU-1) joins
(but why is an Elvish Queen wandering around out here alone?). |
| May 24 |
Arrive at Krell's and negotiate purchase of a magic glove
and gem; these the reason the Party came here.
Krell's guards attack Party as they try to leave; now that
Krell has the Party's money, he wants the items back so he
can sell them again - he knows of others who are interested.
Party escapes with the items intact.
|
| |
| May 27 |
Arrive back at Widdershyn. (via teleport?) |
| May 29 |
Valsein retires. Lorithen resurrected. |
| May 30 |
Party decides to go back and take Krell
out; leave Widdershyn. Tabatha leaves for training. |
Jun 15
|
Arrive at Krell's once more, having stopped only to slay
a hungry Gryphon on the way.
Kill Krell after bypassing most of his guards, then flee.
Followed out by another party who are here attempting to
buy or steal the items the Party already has; a huge spellfire
battle ensues on a rocky slope above a road, but the original
Party wins. Lorithen killed again.
|
| Jun 21 |
Tabatha rejoins. |
| Jun 26 |
Lorithen raised. |
| Jul 1 |
Arrive back at Widdershyn. Treasury
and training go on for a few weeks. |
| Jul 5 |
Lorithen leaves on a quest to
find another Orb. |
Surviving members: Dwalin(WrC-4/F-4), Penthesileah(F-5), Trenellan(Cvr-5),
Judah(A-5), Lorithen(R-3/I-3),
Fimble(NrC-4), Lisse(F-4/MU-1), Tabatha(NtC-3),
Valsein(MU-4)
New members: Lisse
Retirees: Valsein(to Myth Drannor, as "Sevinal"),
Lorithen(to orbquest, then Dolmen Moor)
Casualties: (Lorithen twice - resurrected, raised)
Continuing party(to Eyes of Berta): Dwalin, Penthesileah,
Trenellan, Judah, Fimble, Lisse, Tabatha
16. Eyes of Berta
June-July 1988
Background and summary: finding Penthesileah's future husband
seems to involve putting his regalia together piece by piece.
This time, the Party takes on some Bugbears in order to recover
his helmet and his baldric.
Starting members(from King's Quest):
Dwalin(WrC-4/F-4), Penthesileah(F-5), Trenellan(Cvr-5), Judah(A-5),
Fimble(NrC-4), Lisse(F-4/MU-1), Tabatha(NtC-3).
| Jul 14 486 |
Khrellan(MU-3/T-3) joins. |
| Jul 15 |
Leave Widdershyn after a long round
of training. |
| Jul 19 |
Penthesileah, Judah, and Khrellan kill a couple of wild Boars;
Penthesileah butchers and smokes these, and the Party eats
well.
A Hydra proves no match for the Party.
|
| Jul 20 |
Arrive at Bugbear holding. While scouting,
Party finds an Otyugh in the camp garbage dump and kills it,
alerting the entire camp to their presence. (thus making the
whole adventure much more complicated) |
| Jul 21 |
Start picking off Bugbears a few at a time, via ambushes.
Realize much of the camp is below ground.
Lisse, Fimble, and Penthesileah explore enough to figure
out where the helmet is, but cannot get to it.
|
| Jul 22 |
A cave collapses behind the exploring
Party, trapping them. 4 hours of digging produce a very unsafe
exit but Party manages to squeeze out. |
| Jul 23 |
Trenellan, who has had a Wish outstanding for many months,
finally casts it by accident and teleports every Bugbear in
the caves out to the surface, along with the Party. A massive
brawl ensues here; Trenellan killed.
Party then leaves. A few miles away, Lisse and Tabatha have
to deal with a Dryad who has eyes on Khrellan.
|
| Jul 25 |
Party reaches a community of Elves. Dwalin made a Duke by
Penthesileah.
At this point, the Party splits in half for some reason.
|
Penthesileah, Lisse and Tabatha spend several days with
the Elves, not rejoining the others until Aug 3 and apparently not
doing anything useful in the meantime.
| Jul 26 |
Dwalin, Judah, Fimble and Khrellan
press on, defeating a Pseudodragon and a couple of Ogres on
their way back to the Bugbear holdings. |
| Jul 28 |
Arrive, and find a Ranger scouting the area: Nylund(R-4)
joins (from Night's
Dark Terror B).
Realize there's many more Bugbears here than first thought.
|
| Jul 30 |
Too much rain to do anything except
continue spying on Bugbear activities. |
| Aug 1 |
Start killing off Bugbears 6 at a time
as they leave on patrols. Alerted, a band of 23 Bugbears and
2 Giants show up, and Party kills those too, leaving the heads
on spears as a warning. |
| Aug 3 |
Penthesileah, Lisse, and Tabatha return,
and Party wades into caves again, finishing off the Bugbears
and recovering the baldric off one of them, while finding the
helmet being used as a drinking vessel. |
| Aug 6 |
Trenellan buried with his armour and
sword on a hilltop a day west of Widdershyn. |
| Aug 7 |
Meet Lorithen in Widdershyn
[see below], and get Orb. |
| Aug 8 |
Orb buried with Trenellan. |
| Aug 9 |
Back to Widdershyn for a very fast
treasury division. |
Surviving members: Dwalin(WrC-4/F-4), Penthesileah(F-5), Judah(A-5),
Lorithen(R-3/I-3), Lisse(F-4/MU-1), Fimble(NrC-4),
Khrellan(MU-3/T-3), Tabatha(NtC-3), Nylund(R-4)
New members: Khrellan, Nylund(from Night's
Dark Terror B)
Retirees: none
Casualties: Trenellan
Continuing party(to Dolmen Moor): Dwalin, Penthesileah,
Judah, Lorithen, Fimble, Lisse, Khrellan, Tabatha, Nylund
Orbquest (or, where did Lorithen go?)
After leaving the Party on Jul 5, Lorithen headed south from
Krell's holdings into wild lands. On July 7 she crossed the battleline,
and that night met a most unusual (but helpful) individual in the
forest, resulting in her being turned into an Eagle until the following
sunrise. This allowed her to cover huge amounts of ground in a
hurry, and she flew south until dawn. By July 10, she knew she
was close, as she could feel the pull of a nearby Orb. That evening,
she found a camp of mixed Goblins and Hobgoblins, and a day or two
of scouting told her the Orb was probably in the possession of the
camp's commander. Late on July 11, Balin stopped by, and
dropped a few of his patented lightning bolts into the camp as a
distraction; Lorithen used this as cover, crept in, took out the
commander, and stole the Clear Orb (along with a pile of other valuable
goodies). She then spent weeks travelling north on foot,
reaching Widdershyn in early August.
18. Dolmen Moor
August-December 1988
Background and summary: the Party next have to recover an Elixir
of Life, leading them to assume Penthesileah's intended is
currently dead. They battle with some animated boulders, and recover
the Elixir, but learn they also have to locate a tower somewhere
and there find the Scrolls of Incantation that will revive the future
King. So, off they go, and after much trouble they find
and explore the tower, managing to get Penthesileah killed in the
process. As this is all supposedly for her benefit, the
Party wastes little time in bringing her back!
Starting members: Dwalin(WrC-4/F-4), Penthesileah(F-5), Judah(A-5),
Lorithen(R-3/I-3), Fimble(NrC-4), Lisse(F-4/MU-1), Khrellan(MU-3/T-3),
Tabatha(NtC-3), Nylund(R-4)
| Aug 9 486 |
Penthesileah buys a bar in Widdershyn for use as a Party
base; rehires the existing staff to run it.
Lisse is approached in the bar by another Elf: "Pip
pip! Buy you a beer, babe?" Party thinks this is hilarious
and invites Elf to stick around: Elzinore(F-3) joins.
Lisse, thoroughly offended, decides to head home for a visit;
Lisse leaves.
|
| Aug 11 |
Party is given their next task, to
find something called the Elixir of Life. Armed with such clues
as they can get hold of, they leave town. |
| Aug 13 |
Clobber 4 Hill Giants along the way. |
| Aug 15 |
Take out a couple of Perytons (large
nasty flying things) during the day, and a bunch of undead at
night. |
| Aug 16 |
Defeat a Frost Giant and some giant wolves, but keep the
Frost Giant as a prisoner.
Find "Dagda's Thumb", a stone circle with a structure
beneath, and enter.
A dozen battles with Gargoyles later, Party finds a huge
animated boulder. This poses some riddles, and gives up the
Elixir on getting the right answers. Party leaves, now looking
for some sort of tower, killing the Frost Giant as they go.
|
| Aug 19 |
Back to Widdershyn only to discover
it's not there any more. The city has been moved to a more
defendable location in the forest, and is now called New Widdershyn;
Party soon find their way there. |
The next several weeks are spent in New Widdershyn, as over
half the Party requires training. During this time, Dwalin
also buys a pub (and franchises it to Penthesileah's), and Lisse
rejoins.
|
| Sep 14 |
The war front has closed to within
15 miles of New Widdershyn; Party set off straight toward it. |
| Sep 15 |
Get through battleline causing a ruckus
on the way. |
| Sep 23 |
Find a swamp that fits description of where they need to
go. Once well in it, Party is attacked by endless waves of
Imps; these prove little more than a nuisance.
A band of Satyrs prove much more troublesome, charming almost
half the Party. Khrellan ends up being carried off by Dwalin.
Judah ends up waltzing with Nylund. Penthesileah, Elzinore,
and Fimble are taken to the Satyrs' lair. Lisse and Lorithen
remain uncharmed, while Tabatha turns the tables and charms
a Satyr! By so doing, she is able to learn the location of
the lair, and Penthesileah and Elzinore are soon rescued.
Fimble cannot be found, however; Fimble leaves.
|
| Sep 25 |
Party takes out a small group of Centaurs. |
| Sep 26 |
Invading soldiers and Party arrive at the stone circle at
the same time. Party wins the race, and hurriedly sets up
defenses around the henge.
Henge already has defenses; Party has to deal with some statues,
a Spectre, and a huge animated rock, all before the army charges.
Then, they have to hold off the army.
|
| Sep 27 |
By mid-afternoon, the Party realizes
it is defending the wrong henge! So, they give up, and leave. |
| Sep 28 |
Travel through day. That evening,
Balin stops by, and teleports the Party to the right
place (they were nowhere close) after they explain to him what
they're supposed to be doing and why. |
| Sep 29 |
Enter tower. Defeat a cat several times; it regenerates
after each defeat, only bigger.
Find and kill 3 Salamanders.
That evening, Bitch(B-4) and Pugsley(R-3/MU-2)
join, not having been seen since the southlands.
Party tricks Pugsley into going into room with the now-huge
cat in it; he does, and Pugsley killed.
|
| Sep 30 |
Defeat cat a few more times until it
has used up all 9 lives. |
| Oct 1 |
Top floor of tower is filled with deadly coloured walls of
light. Dwalin reduced to 6" tall by one of these.
Party leaves to rest in forest; disturbs a Golem on the way
out and gets clobbered yet again.
|
| Oct 2 |
All attempts to get Dwalin back to
normal size fail. Various others return to tower and attempt
the walls. |
| Oct 5 |
3 days of work on the walls have got
Tabatha and Penthesileah in almost as far as they can go. |
| Oct 6 |
Find the Scrolls of Incantations behind
last wall; Penthesileah killed by a wall as they exit.
Party leaves. |
| Oct 11 |
Back to New Widdershyn, now behind
enemy lines but so far undisturbed. |
| Oct 12 |
Penthesileah raised. Somehow, Dwalin returned to
normal size around now also.
That night, Judah hires 2 gigolos for Bitch's amusement and
pleasure.

19. Diancecht's Revenge
January-February 1989
Background and summary: At last, the Party have enough bits
and pieces to mount an attempt to actually find this quasi-mythical
King for Penthesileah. They travel to his tomb, but once inside
find themselves taken back in time to a prehistoric age,
where the King - Llewellyn - is discovered to be the female leader
of an Amazon tribe! The Party convinces her to join them;
she does, and becomes the very male Llewellyn when transported to
the "current" time (via the Scrolls) and then given the
Elixir of Life found a few adventures ago.
After this, a grand wedding is planned; everything goes smoothly
except Tabatha either drinks herself to death or has help from
some poison.
Starting members(from Dolmen Moor):
Dwalin(WrC-5/F-5), Penthesileah(F-6), Judah(A-6), Lorithen(R-4/I-4),
Lisse(F-4/MU-1), Tabatha(NtC-3), Khrellan(MU-3/T-4), Nylund(R-5),
Elzinore(F-4), Bitch(B-4)
| Oct 13 486 |
Bitch hires one of the gigolos as a
full-time hench; Rocky the Stud(F-1) joins. |
| Oct 14 |
Party leaves New Widdershyn, travel
several days until arrive at tomb Oct. 17. |
| Oct 18 |
By now completely fed up with this endless search, the Party
throws caution to the wind and wades into the tomb. Several
battles with Ghouls are followed by a much tougher fight with
a pair of Stone Golems, but the Party sails through without
problem.
Shortly after this, Party meets an Iron Golem; they can't
handle it, and flee. It chases them in circles around the
tomb until it finally falls into a pit that it can't climb
out of; they simply leave it here, and carry on.
Nylund killed, either by the Iron Golem or something
immediately after.
Nylund raised somehow, within minutes of dying.
Party goes through Pillars of Nimra and finds itself in a
very different world. Caution returns in a hurry!
Rudimentary exploration, and removal of a couple of extremely
large insects from their campsite, before bed.
|
| "Oct 19" |
Battle a pair of cockatrices during the night; nobody gets
stoned.
Realizing there's a village nearby, Party heads for it and
enters. Ardel, its leader, makes the Party welcome, but only
if they're willing to help her in a battle with a neighbouring
village. Party declines the offer.
|
| "Oct 20" |
Head for neighbouring village, led by "Marna" -
who is in fact Llewellyn! She thinks Party are spies for
Ardel, and has them arrested, to be fed to the Pteranydons
unless they come clean. Party refuses to be ordered around,
so Rocky becomes birdfood: Rocky killed. Seeing this,
the Party fight back, and after a huge brawl are able to battle
their way out with Marna as a captive.
Return to Ardel's village; she is overjoyed to see Marna
has been captured, and immediately sends her troops out to
wipe out Marna's village, which they do. Meanwhile, Party
has to battle their way through a Priestess to get to the
gate back home. They win, but Nylund killed again
by a fire trap just moments after.
|
| "Oct 22" |
Battle a Fire Elemental, and return
to regular time. Marna becomes Llewellyn in the process. |
| Nov 28 |
Party arrives in Wurgen, and immediately
starts wedding planning. |
| Nov 30 |
Lisse leaves for Forlinden.
Nylund buried in Wurgen. |

Penthesileah's Wedding:
| Dec 5 |
After a close party vote, Drustan(F-5)
resurrected; he wakes up to a glass of scotch, and Bitch
saying "Hello, Aztec." He would hang around for the
wedding, then leave with Bitch. |
| Dec 7 |
Drustan buys a gold-plated beer keg
for Penthesileah as a wedding present. |
| Dec 16 |
Lisse returns; much talk of
military matters. Penthesileah and Llewellyn by now becoming
recognized as the King and Queen spoken of in local prophecy,
and there is much celebration. |
| Dec 20 |
Pre-wedding party; Tabatha gets drunk
and puts the move on Lorithen; ends up passed out on Lorithen's
feet, and would not wake up: Tabatha killed. Though
some would suspect Lorithen for many a month, she in fact had
nothing to do with it. |
| Dec 21 |
The wedding, a grand affair, with much
royalty present from neighbouring lands. |
| Dec 23 |
Tabatha raised.
Drustan and Bitch leave via planeshift. [see
below]
|
| Dec 24 |
Judah commissions an engineer to construct
an "egg-cracker", a device to break Rescue of Drustan
style glass fireballs from a distance. Work finished
by Jan 2 487, but device would never prove practical to use. |
The odyssey of Bitch and Drustan:
Background and summary: at one point during her travels, Bitch
had managed to get her hands on an Amulet of the Planes. Not
quite knowing how to use it, but sensing the possibility for adventure,
she talked Drustan into coming along and started plane-hopping
at random. Their journey would become one of the strangest ever
undertaken.
(all dates use Telenet calendar and are subjective to the characters)
| Dec 23 |
Plane-shift to 3rd plane of Elysium
- except Bitch somehow doesn't make it! She soon catches up,
however. |
| Dec 26 |
To a large city, looking for answers;
eventually figure out where they are. |
| Dec 28 |
Bitch seduces Drustan. (at last!)
Plane-shift again, to a desert landscape. (the Australian
outback, circa 1978)
Walk across the desert until passed by a slow-moving train;
they board it, and soon manage to get in a fight with half
the passengers. Someone pulls a gun but does not get the
chance to use it. Eventually, B+D take the whole car hostage,
and figure out how the gun works.
Train pulls into a village some 30 miles north of Melbourne.
B+D arrested; try to escape via use of the Amulet but it fails
repeatedly (this is a non-magic world) until the next full
moon, when it works...
|
(record ends here, but their travels do not. They would continue
plane-hopping for some time; Bitch would eventually gain a level
(to B-5), and Drustan would acquire a Ring of Sustenance. Finally,
they would end up on "Greyworld", a deserted, dry, dusty
place...and the Amulet would here run out of charges! See Greyworld
adventure for continuation of their tale.)
20. Spire In the Icefield
(a.k.a. Icefield A) February-April 1989
Background and summary: between one clue and another, the
Party come to realize that the White Orb - stolen from them at the
end of the Cone Peak adventure - may not be all that far away from
them. So, in the dead of winter they head over to the glacier-covered
island of Finnia, and set about looking for it. Penthesileah leaves
Llewellyn in charge of the country; he would prove rather
inept, and she would be forced to take over after this adventure.
Needless to say, the Orb is not undefended, and the Party's
biggest challenge would end up being its own members; Penthesileah
and Lorithen would become enemies, and cause a great deal
of trouble before finally being defeated. During this adventure,
the Party would find and take a clutch of 16 White Dragon eggs.
Once back in civilization, these eggs would become the foundation
of the 7-Dwarves Holding Company, a Party-run operation that would
eventually go on to become a corporate behemoth in the northlands.
Starting members(from Diancecht's Revenge):
Dwalin(WrC-5/F-5), Penthesileah(F-6), Judah(A-6), Lorithen(R-4/I-4),
Khrellan(MU-4/T-4), Tabatha(NtC-4)
| Dec 31 486 |
Fozzdyk Fizzdip(MU-4) joins. |
| Jan 7 487 |
Arrive at Fjellmar, the only real settlement
on Finnia. Hire a local 8th-level Ranger as a guide. |
| Jan 8 |
Fozzdyk gains a familiar (no record
of what). Party then spends several days getting cold-weather
survival lessons from Tapio, the Ranger. |
| Jan 15 |
Heading up onto the icefield, Party
defeats a couple of Owlbears. |
| Jan 18 |
Tapio leaves, having done all he can
for the Party. Tabatha charms a bear, and Party clobber 6 very
out-of-place Minotaurs; amazingly, it turns out they are native
to the island. |
| Jan 20 |
By now, the Party have encountered
other Humans here; considered enemies at first, the Party soon
realize these people might make good allies as the Minotaurs
are a common enemy, and a truce follows. Party are introduced
to iceboats, the locals' way of getting around up here. |
| Jan 24 |
Weather finally clears up, and the Humans and Party together
mount an offensive against the Minotaurs. A massive set-piece
battle ensues, with hundreds of warriors on each side. Flying
over the whole thing, and helping the Minotaurs, is a rider
on a White Dragon; this individual would manage to capture
Penthesileah during the battle, and carry her off. The only
person to notice this is Lorithen; she does her best to follow,
and gets blasted by spellcraft from the Dragon's rider. She
tries to flee, but is bleeding to death, and ends up also
getting taken captive.
Some impressive damage done during the battle: Penthesileah
does a 60-point sword attack before getting captured, while
Tabatha hits a Minotaur with a slingstone for 24 points.
Party are given an iceboat as thanks for their help; spend
a few days learning how to sail it.
|
| Jan 26 |
"Shove off and avast, mateys!"
Sail across icefield to base of a cliff; Dragon reputedly lives
in or near a huge spire on top of this cliff, providing an easy
landmark to aim for. |
| Jan 27 |
Climb cliff, battle some more Minotaurs
and quasi-Human associates. |
| Jan 28 |
Finish climbing, find a set of buildings at base of spire.
Penthesileah and Lorithen(now recovered) ambush Party as
they enter a building; Party manages to get them both uncharmed
before killing them, but not easily. Then, find and slay
the Mage who had them charmed, while the White Dragon flies
off under a hail of missiles.
Lorithen takes out her frustrations by blowing away an inoffensive
Polar Bear.
|
| Jan 29 |
Party finds 3 small White Dragons; Tabatha charms one, and
the other 2 are slain. Party wades into a system of caves,
and finds both the White Orb and a clutch of 16 dragon eggs.
Tabatha determines they are still fertile, and with great
care the Party takes them along.
For some reason, Tabatha also charms a wolf.
|
| Jan 30 |
Back to boat; charmed creatures left
behind. |
| Feb 1 |
Return to Human village. Negotiations:
villagers get the 1st and 3rd hatchlings, plus another if all
16 hatch. Also, villagers get 100 bows and 2000 arrows, and
10 pounds of peat for each successful hatch over 8. |
| Feb 9 |
Arrive back in Fjellmar; Khrellan immediately corners peat
market futures. Buy bows and arrange for arrows. Party leases
a small warehouse for bows and arrows; Khrellan stays with
it, with 1000 g.p. from the Party: Khrellan retires,
and finds his true calling later as a corporate executive.
Party forms the 7-Dwarves Holding Company (7-DHC), and contemplates
buying the whole island of Finnia!
|
| Feb 15 |
By now, Party has bought several acres
of land near Fjellmar, and hired a bunch of locals to clear
it and build them a house. Tapio hired to ferry bows and arrows
to villagers on glacier. Party hires a ship and leaves for
the mainland. |
| Feb 17 |
The White Dragon reappears, and attacks
and sinks the Party's ship but is killed in the process. Party
loses much of their treasure, but the eggs are safe as they're
still in Fjellmar. Fortunately, the ship sank close to shore,
and the lifeboats are able to make it there late that night. |
| Feb 19 |
Party meets and kills 3 Hill Giants
while on a long overland trek to Wurgen; arrive there in evening. |
| Feb 24 |
Tabatha finds and hires a veterinarian
(specialty: Dragons) to go to Fjellmar and look after the eggs. |
| Feb 28 |
By now, Llewellyn has proven himself quite useless as a King;
he is given the White Orb and sent off on a quest, while Penthesileah
takes over rulership: Penthesileah retires.
Party takes a break for training, rest, and corporate wheeling
and dealing; Fozzdyk retires to work for 7-DHC.
|
Surviving members: Dwalin(WrC-6/F-6), Penthesileah(F-6), Judah(A-7),
