41. Dark Ships at Nymph
Bay (8-5-2;0), Scori 17-22 758, DE
03
Background and summary: The Party goes to Nymph Bay and tries
to gather information about pirates that are rumoured to
be operating there, while breaking in some new recruits in the process.
They barely scratch the surface of the problem before retreating,
and are then told to stand down by none other than King Richard.
Starting members (from Stairway
to Heaven): Calion(F-7/T-8), Mrikle(I-8)
(from Halls
of Foraya): Lars(NrC-7)
| Sco 9 758 |
An adventure-seeking Monk arrives at Verwood Keep
and is recruited: Gray Torvellian(Mk-6) joins. |
| Sco 10 |
A Fighter hanging around Verwood village catches
Lanefan's attention; some sparring shows he's fit for
service, so he's taken to the Keep and signed up. Thus, Rohn(F-6)
joins. |
| Sco 11 |
Sometime around now, Calion hires a gaggle of
henches: Zakla(WrC-2), Bolger Proudfoot(F-2) and Fritter
the Quick(T-2) all join. |
| Party leaves Verwood. |
| Sco 16 |
Arrive Nymph Bay. |
| Sco 17 |
With no real idea where to begin, Party splits
up and starts investigating entire town, eventually focusing
on ships in harbour. |
| After dark, Calion and Fritter investigate a suspicious
ship; Calion does his best to get caught sneaking around while
Fritter hides. Eventually, Calion just rips out its gangplank
and flees in the confusion. |
| Calion then breaks into a warehouse, makes noise
at all the wrong times, but escapes with Fritter’s help. |
| Rohn and Torvellian try to dredge up info from
local pubs but don't do very well. |
| Sco 18 |
Rohn wakes up to a note daggered to his pillow
warning him to get lost. |
| Rohn and Torvellian get hired on to the ship "Queen
Anne" but never report for duty. |
| Zakla and Bolger, posing as merchants, row out
to ship Calion attacked last night but get nowhere useful. |
| Calion sneaks into a warehouse; finds out these
really are pirates, that the legendary Mary Rose is due
in town tonight, and that the evil god Pyrate has agents here.
(see Fred's Treasure Map
for write-up on the Mary Rose) |
| Pyrate involvement reported to local Helm temple;
they investigate, but find nothing. Party then become paranoid
about possible corruption in Helm temple. |
| Sco 19 |
In wee hours of morning, capture Jones, a local
dockhand helping unload the Mary Rose. |
| Various methods of persuasion get a bit of info
out of Jones, but he doesn't know much. |
| Not trusting any local authorities, Party decide
to leave town then and there and take Jones to Riveria city
where King Richard's people can deal with him. |
| Sco 20 |
Party run into pirate roadblock on Sapentra High
Bridge; Calion sneaks forward and throws their MU off of bridge,
and Party get past in the confusion and make it to Riveria. |
| Femira, a King's agent last seen in Against
the Slavers, finds Party that night: His Majesty would
like a word. |
| Sco 22 |
Meet with Richard. He orders Party to cease their
investigations as they may pose a threat to Duke Althus (Nymph
Bay's noble); for numerous political reasons Richard wants him
left alone. He assures Party he will mount his own investigation,
and will advise in a month's time how Party may best be of service. |

Calion, Mrikle, Lars, Rohn, Torvellian, Zakla, Bolger, Fritter
42. Danger at Drowsaptre (a.k.a. Fred's
Treasure Map Revisited) (8-0-0;2),
Scori 25-Tari 2 758, JA-MR 04
Background and summary: Finding themselves with nothing to do
for a month, the Party head off to the nearby Drowsaptre swamp to
finish an adventure that Calion's party of years ago never really
started; one that might have - both then and now - connections to
the Nymph Bay pirates. This connection is quickly confirmed when
the Party's scouts sight the Mary Rose putting to sea from a tiny
harbour behind the same stronghold Calion and company turned away
from in Fred's Treasure Map.
Somewhat against the odds, the Party end up clobbering just about
every pirate they can find, and sail off with a boatload of captives
and a goodly hoard for their trouble.
Starting members (from Dark Ships at Nymph
Bay): Calion(F-7/T-8), Mrikle(I-8), Lars(NrC-7),
Rohn(F-6), Torvellian(Mk-6),
Zakla(WrC-2), Bolger(F-2), Fritter(T-2)
| Sco 23 758 |
During conversation, Calion mentions Diora;
Rohn hears this, starts asking questions, and it soon turns
out that she is his long-lost half-sister. |
| Torvellian and Calion amuse themselves for days
with debates about ethics. |
| Sco 24 |
Altheas psyonically contacts Party, then
Diora; Diora plane-shifts to Riveria, but her reunion with Rohn
is interrupted by arrival of Llandreesa, who had been
tipped off by Altheas. The usual cat-fight results. |
| Diora loans Rohn some useful magic items including
an Anklet of Water Walk. |
| Sco 26 |
Into Drowsaptre and get jumped by 10 Troglodytes;
blundering Party does well over 40 h.p. total damage to itself
(most of that to Torvellian) while Trog's inflict all of 6. |
| Reach stronghold. Calion and Torvellian scout,
and to their amazement find the Mary Rose tied up at
a small dock behind stronghold; they watch it set sail a few
hours later. |
| Calion sends Fritter into an outbuilding to steal
whatever papers she can find; she does, along with 76 p.p. and
a pile of jewelry from the occupant. |
| Much to Fritter's annoyance, Calion returns the
jewelry in such a way as to make it look like someone from the
stronghold tried to take it. |
Sco 27
. |
Spend day planning attack on stronghold, then
put plan into effect at dusk. Bolger killed, but Party
take out some significant foes (F-17, F-12, MU-8, 16 various
lower-level types, and 25 Lizardmen) before retreating |
| At one point during this, Mrikle sends a lightning
bolt through a door and blows up a Wand of Fireballs inside;
a fair chunk of building collapses as a result. |
| Fritter steals the jewelry again, this time from
where Calion planted it, during Party's retreat. |
| Tari 1 |
Rested Party sneaks back into stronghold through
passage found when rescuing Pandora, take out about 30
more pirates without alerting the main complex, score lots of
loot. |
| Calion is fooled by an illusionary room full of
gold and brings the roof down, alerting all to Party's presence.
Party flees, except Calion who shuts the door behind and sneaks
through castle just in time to rescue Party - who are now under
attack outside. |
| Rohn ferries Zakla away to a nearby island. Meanwhile
Calion duels with "Pegleg", gets hurt, but wins -
then sneaks aboard a docked ship and finds a glyph: Calion
killed. |
| Rest of Party, not knowing Calion is already dead,
mount a disorganized rescue mission; somehow, they capture the
ship along with its captain and 16 crew. Then someone remembers
to go retrieve Zakla. |
| On pretense of searching for Calion, Fritter cases
and robs the ship. |
| Tar 2 |
Decide to leave immediately with some 25 captives;
the "Rohn outboard" powers ship to open water. |
| A 9-hour journey is still long enough for Rohn
to have a fling with Derise, a spectacularly attractive pirate. |
| Arrive Riveria, debrief with Femira. Find captured
captain is a Riverian agent(!) and have to come up with a plausible
way of letting him go; end up dumping this problem in Femira's
lap. |
| Tar 3 |
Calion raised. Zakla retires, still
annoyed about being stuck on an island during the battle. |
| Tar 5 |
Calion retires. Fritter leaves
to train (to T-3). Rohn leaves, goes to Waterdeep,
changes his appearance somewhat, and eventually resurfaces in
Crown of Talarthane. |
Surviving members: Calion(F-7/T-8), Mrikle(I-8), Lars(NrC-7),
Rohn(F-6), Torvellian(Mk-6), Zakla(WrC-3), Fritter(T-3)

R-500: At the End of the Universe (all-star) (17-1-0;9),
Tari 4 758, MR 6 04
Background and summary: A fabulously powerful and extremely
bored Gnome – one Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged – decides
one day to have some fun. So, he spends entire seconds putting
together an elaborate illusion over his own castle, after
which an odd assortment of characters both dead and alive find themselves
gated to what looks like a strange little rock at the end of the
universe. After much exploration, trouble with the law,
and encounters with lots and lots of old foes they thought they'd
never have to see again, they lose over half the party in
defeating the dreaded P-V Monster, then make their ways back to
where they came from in the first place. Afterwards, most
learn the whole thing has only limited effects on the "real"
characters, and everyone carries on as before.
Starting members (from all over the place): Calion(F-7/T8),
Pearl(MU-8/NrC-4), Christophe(B-6), Mrikle(I-8), Araglas(F-9),
Diora(WrC-9),
Dezler(MU-6), Aimbitlooa(R-5), Drogo(F-6), Khye(F-5),
Altheas(MU-5), Grolsch(T-6), Eldar(F-8), Nigella(Cvr-7),
Nashanna(NtC-7)
| Tar 4 758 |
Various characters from all kinds of planes and
places are gated by Wowbagger to his home on Winter World, heavily
disguised to look like a small little rock floating in space
with water pouring off it. They appear on several islands in
this water, but soon gather on the main rock. |
| Various people try various ways to get off the
ground and fly or levitate; none work. |
| A ledge holds several coin-op telescopes. Calion
tries to break in to one of these and an endless stream of policemen
start appearing, each with "stun guns" (wands of Hold
Person). Party kill about 30 bobbies but all end up held
and arrested except Drogo, who fakes being held but still gets
arrested anyway. |
| During this, Nashanna turns into a skunk and sprays
friend and foe alike. Meanwhile Diora drops both Flamestrike
and Dispel Magic on Araglas, taking out some of her better
magic items for the night and prompting a stream of dire threats.
Also, Pearl looks through a telescope (after paying!); sees
Shauna(I-7/T-9) on a nearby island, waving at her. Lots
of paranoia takes root among those few not held yet. |
| Everyone taken by police to court, where all except
Nigella - even including Diora's pet lions - are found guilty
of something and sentenced to death; Nigella, who did nothing
outside, is told she is free to go. Defenses often interrupted
by Virag the defense lawyer, with ludicrous objections; always
sustained. |
| Eldar first, then Araglas and Khye later, all
attack Teimperian, the judge. Dolos, the prosecutor, intervenes
and drains Araglas by 2 levels (to F-7) and Khye by 4 levels
(to F-1), then shoots Khye with a lightning bolt: Khye killed
(and Teimperian killed as well, not that Dolos cares). |
| The headsman, Verbrugge, for each character cuts
off the bailiff's head instead; characters return to ledge. |
| Into complex, find a subway station. Train pulls
in with Khye's corpse aboard, so Khye raised by Diora
between one station and the next - but it's a simulacrum Khye
that rises, with all its levels back but no pulse, breathing,
etc. Diora manages to turn it, after which everyone forgets
about it, so it tags along. |
| A shopping mall provides much entertainment.
Grolsch confronts Steve DaFiji in Radio Shack and comes away
with a new companion for his trouble, thus Stick(stick) joins.
Araglas, Mrikle, Calion and Christophe put lots of effort into
trying to rob a jewellery store, but only Christophe gets anything
- and he promptly forgets he has it. |
| Shauna and her band are playing in the Bar at
the End of the Universe but can't tell Party much of use. |
| Everyone buys hammers at the hardware store; the
Satyr staff give lots of advice on erections. |
To "Church", an under-construction temple
to the God of Hammers. Party get in as next work shift, but
within minutes Eldar attacks the boss - the dreaded Prittr-Vern
Monster - when told to get to work:
o 35 workers attack entire
Party but accomplish little;
o a hammering robot (Hammerbot)
comes to life and nearly kills Calion before he can flee;
o most of the workers succumb
to sleep spells;
o Calion's fleeing draws
Hammerbot on to Mrikle, who tries to shoot it with her wand
of lightning but gets squashed while so doing - Mrikle killed
- and the wand breaks and explodes;
o Calion, Grolsch, Nashanna,
Khye, Eldar, Dezler and Altheas all killed
instantly by 15 lightning bolts bouncing around the room; PVM
and Hammerbot also killed for good measure, along with a bunch
of workers. Mrikle finishes at exactly -100 h.p. Lots and
lots of items go boom, while those in the next room - the lucky
ones - watch in horror as the dust settles (and Wowbagger giggles
somewhere);
o out
from the very middle of the smoke and carnage staggers Araglas,
to the utter amazement of all survivors. |
| The remaining few, plus Stick (Grolsch went invisible,
so Stick went to Pearl and thus unwittingly saved its own life)
cut through a chain-link fence, walk down a passage, and return
whence they came. Stick, about the only thing here that's real
other than Shauna and Wowbagger, goes back to Riveria with Grolsch. |

42. Windward Ho! (7-3-0;1),
Tari 8-20, MR-AL 04
Background and summary: During her tour of duty with Alpha party,
Tylara has learned of a persistent Demon problem over on
Windward Isle and wants to investigate the source of it. So she
rounds up a few people who happen to have a little time on
their hands, and off they go to a part of the Isle that tends to
swallow up any who venture there. Once there, the Party
finds Demons in numbers far greater than they can even begin to
handle, so they do some scouting and then wisely withdraw; later,
they pass lots of useful information to the now-very-concerned
locals.
Starting members (from Danger at Drowsaptre):
Mrikle(I-8), Torvellian(Mk-6)
(from Lost Temple of Tharizdun
via alpha series): Tylara(F-6)
(from Black
Hand II): Andrew(NrC-5)
| Tar 6 758 |
Tylara joins, looking for people to help
her investigate Demons on Windward Island. As the last batch
of henches have all left, a psyonic call goes out for new ones. |
| Tar 7 |
Serra Angel(F-3) and Sarra Lee(MU-2)
join as new henches, from Company's farm team. |
| Leave Riveria. |
| Tar 9 |
Arrive Bardsford; Andrew joins, not seen
since the Black Hand affair. |
| Tar 10 |
Hear tell of The Cutters, a party Company that
went into the Demon area 2 years ago and never returned; Calion
remembers that Dibs - a founding EC'er - had a brother in that
Company. |
| A Ranger stumbles on Party's camp and they take
her in, so Auril Terna(R-5) joins. |
| Tar 12 |
By now, Party is wondering if Auril is cursed;
every enemy met has (by sheer luck) attacked her first. |
| Tar 13 |
Meet an odd fellow in a little rowboat on a lake
known to be very dangerous; eventually learn he has quested
himself to this task to help stop Demons from expanding their
territory, but don't find out much else about him and thus fail
to appreciate his true significance. (he is in fact a minion
of Kerial) |
| A significant Demon attacks during night but doesn't
last long. |
| Tar 14 |
The Enterprise Company gets a logo consisting
of an E with a C through it. |
| Tar 15 |
Party climbs over a ridge and finds Demons by
the hundreds(!) in a valley beyond. Observe for a while, then
retreat very quietly. |
| Another Demon attacks during night, poses more
of a challenge, and poisons Serra. Party flees after killing
this, and Auril fixes Serra later. |
| Tar 16 |
Andrew petrified by a tiny little Demon
that had nothing else going for it; he takes some 55,000 g.p.
worth of Party possessions with him. |

retire. |
| Tar 22 |
Arrive Riveria. Tylara leaves to train

45. Temple of Pyrate
(10-1-1;1), Tari 25-Prici 21 758, AL-JL 04
Background and summary: Investigations have turned up evidence
of a Pyrate base somewhere south of Nymph Bay. King Richard
sends the Party to find and destroy it. Coincidentally, the floor
plan of this temple bears a striking resemblance to that
of Claremont High, circa 1978.

is noticed and dispelled. |
| Pri 4 |
Take out a supply wagon heading for temple, capture
3 occupants and extract lots of good information. |
| Pri 5 |
During night, a band of 6 locals come looking
for wagon; Party captures these too. |
| A local "bartender", Dorwe, is following
the locals; Serioge, Fulvin, Munin and Pearl track him down
and capture him after a nasty fight. Captives now outnumber
Party. |
| Munin goes into town and burns Pyrate's mark on
door of pub Dorwe worked in, then stays to see if any odd results
come of that. Rest of Party heads for coast, then get stuck
for days by extreme winds. |
| Pri 8 |
Tylara(F-7) joins; she has brought a boat
to transport Party and captives to Riveria. |
| Pri 9 |
Munin by land and everyone else by sea arrive
at Riveria. Lots of questioning. Femira at one point brings
her "boss", Corrie, along to help. |

Richard, in disguise. |
| Pearl sacrifices a particularly nasty sword to
Sif. Party then leaves town and heads back to temple. |
| Pri 11 |
Arrive at temple and spend day observing. |
| Invade after dark and, after a series of nasty
battles, neutralize the place and take lots of captives. |

wealthy bits missed in previous two. |

Assault on Verwood Keep(mini) (36-1-1;1),
Prici 21-23 758, JL-AU 04
Background and summary: A few months ago, members of the Enterprise
Company dusted up a pirate stronghold (see Danger at
Drowsaptre). The pirates now attempt to take their revenge by
doing the same to the Company's castle at Verwood, but by
the most amazing luck the Company are forewarned, and the assault
has little effect. Much more effective are negotiations
afterwards between King Richard, pirates, and Company – many of
whose members then settle in for a winter break.
Starting members (from Temple of Pyrate):

| Pri 18 758 |
Simpson arrives from Waterdeep and brings a new
recruit with him, thus Jane McEvil(MU-6) joins. |
| Pri 21 |
As part of sorting out treasury from Temple
of Pyrate, Pearl flies up to Verwood with a very magic
book so Ancalidon can try some psyonics on it. Pearl then flies
back to Riveria. |
| An entire party show up, returning from Desert
Stalker, and the Keep is as full as it has ever been. |
| Ancalidon's futurecasts alert him that all may
not soon be well; he advises one and all of this but can offer
no specifics yet. (this is sheer luck on the Company's part
- Ancalidon had no other reason to look into the future,
and the pirates had no way of realizing the Company would be
so well forewarned) |
| Pri 22 |
Ancalidon does some more futurecasts, realizes
that trouble is headed this way. S'nel'be uses a Commune
to get lots of information. Keep turns into a hornets' nest. |
| Pearl, having already teleported to Waterdeep
this morning with Mrikle, teleports both to Keep. Meanwhile
S'nel'be takes Company's teleporting tapestry and planeshifts
to Riveria, thus bringing back all the Pyrate types except
Fulvin and Fritter; they fly up on Serioge's carpet
and miss the excitement. |
| Trilby and Nashanna fly out and scout pirates,
camped in the nearby woods. Everyone else plans. |
| Meanwhile, pirates also plan, and send out a few
scouts; just after dark, one getting caught not far from the
castle in full view of defenders and pirates alike changes pirates'
plans immensely. |
| Later, 2 pirates fly in. One is the legendary
Fred the Fearless, who lands on Tovan and gets surrounded by
Company heavyweights. Serioge loses an arm, and Chiron killed,
but Fred eventually slain; a Dispel Magic had
cut off his retreat by flight. The other is a mage who drops
fireballs in from high above until Perry, Marlu and Nashanna
combine to disrupt him. |
| Diora planeshifts in on hearing of Chiron's
death. Meanwhile, Perry grabs the pirate mage and teleports
to Luskan, hoping for help from Diora. Perry and mage soon
lose track of each other in darkness. |
| Perry finds Volker and spends the night
with him. |
| Pirates charge en masse, but grind to a gleeful
halt when told Fred has fallen. It turns out they knew the
Company was alert to their presence, and had hung Fred out to
dry. His replacement, George, opens negotiations, with Ancalidon
acting for Company. |
| Meanwhile, Anurri using Dreamsinger has learned
Fred's sword is in fact Edge, the next sword that party was
to seek. So they have the fruits of an entire adventure essentially
fall into their lap, but have to spend a fair amount of effort
prying it loose from a vengeful Diora. |
| Myra takes hold of Dreamsinger and learns much
about all the swords; she on the spot joins that party. |
| Pri 23 |
Fulvin and Fritter finally roll in, shortly after
midnight. |
| Debriefing all round. King Richard is informed
of proceedings and involves himself in the talks; he leaves
Riveria later in the day heading for Verwood. |
| Perry starts travelling south the hard way from
Luskan; meanwhile, Diora returns there via planeshift. |
| Party agree to return Fred's body to pirates in
exchange for his loot; Company makes good over 50,000 g.p. even
after paying to fix Chiron and Serioge. |
and now, a long and eventful break:
| Pri 24 |
Several parties start or resume treasury and training;
Ancalidon realizes he has bumped (to P-7). |
| Pri 27 |
King Richard arrives at Verwood, his first official
visit since granting Company the land. Between all the Company
members and Richard's entourage, both Keep and village are full
to bursting. |
| Pri 28 |
Serioge gets his arm regenerated at Riveria. |
| Shel'lecryn gets a couple of missing levels restored
(so back to R-7) at Riveria. |
| Aqu 1 |
Chiron resurrected at Riveria after long-distance
intervention by Richard to persuade the Imdul Clerics to do
it; they had at first refused to resurrect what they perceived
to be a monster. |
| Aqu 2 |
Richard leaves Verwood, having bartered a privateering
deal with the pirates that sees them keep the Mary Rose and
provide Company with an ongoing supply of pearls for spells.
The remaining pirates also leave. |
| Ancalidon leaves for Waterdeep as he has to train
there; he returns sometime in late Lequi. |
| Aqu 5 |
During treasury division, S'nel'be puts on an
amulet and goes berserk; he hammers Nashanna hard before several
heavyweights (Dakiell, Tylara, Lanefan, Shel'lecryn, etc.) can
knock him out. A Remove Curse from Kermut fixes things. |
| Aqu 9 |
Perry finally makes it back to the Keep. |
| Aqu 15 |
Marlu begins reading a book to improve her Intelligence. |
| Leq 13 |
Marlu finishes her book. Lots of people start
gearing up to leave; lots of others retire, or retire again. |
