21. Welcome to the Swamp
I: Rescue of Perry (16-7-1;2), Verga
13 756-Leirn 7 757, SE 01-AL 02
Background and summary: As part of the Waterdeep investigation,
Perry infiltrated the Black Hand guild and wound up far to the south,
in what amounted to an Assassins' boot camp. After a few weeks here,
his cover was blown and he was taken prisoner; meanwhile, everyone
up north mostly forgot about him while spending weeks sorting things
out in Waterdeep. Finally, unable to raise Perry psyonically and
uncertain if he was even still alive (and perhaps feeling a bit guilty
about leaving him there so long), a Party set out to try and find
him. After many diversions - including pirate ships, dragons, Assassins,
and large 7-legged dogs - they finally rescue what little is left
of Perry, who has spent the last few months as a Vampire's feeding
trough.
Starting members (from Black
Hand II): Calion(F-5/T-5), Pearl(MU-6/NrC-2),
Throy(F-7), Dior(WrC-6), Chiron(F-5), Myra(B-4), Mrikle(I-6),
Grolsch(T-5), Darcie(MU-4)
| Ver 1 756 |
Trilby Trundlefoot(NtC-4) joins. |
| Ver 3 |
Leave Waterdeep by ship; all Party knows is that
Perry was last known to be "a long way south". |
| Ver 17 |
Marine gargoyles attack Party's boat, Calion
puts 108 h.p. damage into one with one swing. |
| Ver 21 |
First contact with pirates rumoured to be in
area; Throy and Pearl invent "carpet bombing" by dropping
large boulders off a flying carpet onto pirate ships. They
sink one, and badly damage another. |
| Pirates fight back; their own flying MU hits Darcie
with a Lightning Bolt and costs her two magic rings. |
| Pirate MU is then shot down, and eaten by local
sharks. Meanwhile, Party captures a 20' boat (prize). |
| Party first bombs, then invades the pirates' land
base, taking a few captives. During this, crew on Party's own
ship mutinies, but are bought off with a promise of shares in
pirate loot (which they never do get). |
| Ver 22 |
Ship becalmed; using a Ring of Water Walk, Calion
becomes the Elvish outboard until wind rises. |
| Trilby and Myra have to intervene to stop Dior
from carving up one of the captives. |
| Throy and Pearl later try to fly off to scout
but gale-force winds dump them and carpet in sea; Pearl almost
drowns. |
| Ver 23 |
Party sneaks ashore and finishes off pirates'
land base. |
| Ver 24 |
Return to own ship and find it gone; Pearl on
T'th'kaa finds it 20 miles away, the crew are trying to steal
it. |
| Throy-Dior by carpet and Chiron-Darcie by water-walk
chase after ship, eventually catch. |
| Darcie webs ship up after crew shoot at Throy.
Dior – by now the only Party member crew will speak to – negotiates
a truce; Darcie doesn't help when she poisons a crewman, but
Dior fixes this too. |
| Ver 26 |
Ship, prize, and Party arrive at Muraan. |
| Ver 28 |
Skandigan celebrations see Pearl, Mrikle and
Darcie hold their own mini-orgy. |
| Party sell ship and fire crew; buy a smaller ship
they can sail themselves with much less help. |
| Fie 1 |
Hire some help: Roy, a herbalist, is brought
along as a poison fixer, and 2 local sailors are taken on as
crew for when Party is ashore. |
| Going to a local temple to recruit one competent
Cleric instead produces six very enthusiastic not-so-competent
ones: Demetrio(NrC-4), Maica(NrC-3), Bartolo(NrC-2), Adamira(NrC-2),
Pasqual(NrC-2) and Zayvius(NrC-1) all join,
of whom Maica is the only one with any field adventuring
experience. |
| Fie 3 |
Leave Muraan; Party on larger boat and "six-pack"
of Clerics on prize, despite Party's best attempts to leave
the six behind. |
| Fie 6 |
Reach Assassin camp (but don't realize it yet).
Darcie and Grolsch explore a shipwreck on beach and each lose
a level (to MU-3 and T-4 respectively) to undead hiding inside
it. |
| Darcie prays to Skaldi and gets divine intervention
via Dior, who restores her lost level without knowing it. |
| Fie 7 |
Darcie wakes up back at MU-4. Party scouts from
air, and realize they've found the right place. |
| An away team of Darcie, Myra and Calion sneak
ashore and get caught; Myra poisoned and collapses but no-one
can find her as she is invisible. |
| Calion and Darcie go back, find and rescue Myra,
and take 2 captives in a rather bungled operation. |
| Fie 8 |
Question captives, then Darcie and Dior try to
kill them; Grolsch punts Darcie off ship. Captives survive. |
| Calion has fun with communication device taken
with captives. (and causes much more confusion among
Assassins on shore than he would ever realize) |
| Whole Party goes ashore and heads inland. Meet
6 people jogging along trail; kill 1 and capture 5, then kill
4 of the 5 when their answers aren't useful enough. Remaining
one ends up charmed to Pearl. |
| Fie 9 |
A Hydra, big enough to threaten entire Party,
crashes out of woods; Mrikle paralyzes it with one spell. |
| 5 Orcs prove no threat; the six-pack sacrifice
4 of their corpses, become blessed with super strength and super
levels for next combat. (!) |
| A Blue Dragon proves more of a menace; Chiron
wants to sneak past but Throy shoots it instead, so a big argument
arises. Dragon flies away during this. |
| Arrive at a gatehouse in the middle of nowhere;
capture a couple of Orcs guarding it, and sack out there. |
One Orc tries to escape after dark; Dior and Throy
chase it, Dior catches it - and then Santa
flies by:
o Throy and Grolsch both
try to shoot Santa down, Grolsch hits Blitzen;
o Throy and Grolsch gets
lumps of coal for their trouble, Throy's hits him for 6 points
damage;
o Santa lands on gatehouse
roof, leaves presents for various: Dior becomes Diora;
Darcie changes gender again and becomes Darby; Pearl
and Myra gain spells, and Chiron gets back his memories of being
Moro;
o Trilby cures Blitzen;
gets best gift of all: a walnut that works like a permanent
Candle of Invokation;
o During all this, Diora
murders the Orc that earlier tried to escape. |
| Fie 10 |
Skaldi visits Diora during morning prayer session,
strips her of all spell points until the Orc is brought back
to life by her doing. |
| Diora sacrifices 9,000 g.p., becomes an Orc for
the day; meanwhile ex-captive awakens elsewhere. |
| A Black Dragon erupts out of swamp. Pearl
and Zayvius killed, then Chiron sucks it into his Mirror
of Opposition. It wins against its clone, then returns (nearly
killing Chiron in process); Party carve it up. |
| Back to gatehouse; look for, find, and dig out
a tunnel leading off from here. |
| Myra explores outside and finds quicksand; is
lucky to be rescued by Calion and Diora. |
| Fie 11 |
Throy and Diora clear out lots of glyphs from
tunnel, then everyone goes through to bash some local nuisances
on the other side en route to a fortress on an island in swamp. |
| Myra, Calion and Grolsch explore around fortress
and are easily noticed by guardian bats. M,C + G think they're
being really sneaky, however, and return to Party none the wiser. |
| Trilby charms a bat while rest of Party argues
about what to do next. |
| Fie 12 |
A heavily-armoured individual called Shatzerai
walks down trail. Darby charms him (or so he thinks), but he's
actually faking it in order to get close to Party. He then
tries to blow them away with spells but only gets killed for
his trouble. |
| Speak With Dead on Shatzerai gives lots
of useful info. |
| Fie 13 |
Throy and Diora fly along causeway and get attacked
by what amounts to an enormous lobster. Diora grabbed and nearly
killed, meanwhile Throy flies away (!) but soon returns and
takes the thing down. |
| Retreat to gatehouse. |
| Fie 15 |
Back to fortress, find there's a band of Lizardpeople
living on island; capture a few for info. |
| For some reason (to impress captives?) Mrikle
generates Orc illusions for Grolsch, Myra and Calion to kill. |
| Sack out near fortress; see a couple of Nightmares
flying off during night but have no idea what they are. |
| Fie 16 |
Somehow, Party gets in front door of fortress
and speaks to fortress-owner Dolos. Result is that Party is
allowed to recover and remove Perry, so Perry(T-0) rejoins.
(and see below) |
| A battle erupts; Party kills Shatzurine, among
others. Retreat to gatehouse, but Perry is charmed to Dolos
and keeps weakly trying to return to fortress. |
| Myra charms Perry but cannot break Dolos' charm.
By now, realize the Shatz's were part-Vampire, so lots of paranoia
over people's teeth from here on. |
| A teenage girl - Lafeen - wanders by that night
and is easily captured; she claims to be here as "the next
Shatzurine" and is wearing a very odd symbol. This would
turn out to be highly significant later. |
| Fie 17 |
Darby shrinks Throy to half-size during night
but he recovers by morning. Day spent scouting and resting. |
| Fie 18 |
Throy leaves for Muraan with Perry and bits of
Pearl, so Perry retires. |
| Fie 19 |
Throy arrives at Muraan but can't find any help
for either Perry or Pearl; leaves both behind. |
| Fie 20 |
Party chased out of gatehouse by arriving Assassins;
a rolling brawl gets more complicated when Lafeen suddenly turns
into a full-blown Vampire. Demetrio loses 2 levels to her (now
NrC-2). |
| More Assassins sneak in; one poisons Diora, but
Trilby saves her when he finally figures out his walnut. |
| Fie 21 |
Return to Assassin camp and attack outright;
Chiron does a spectacular open-field charge in silence and invisible,
and Party eventually cleans out the place. Lots of loot, and
Trilby rescues and befriends a huge 7-legged dog that he later
names Septrundler. |
| The dog nearly kills Grolsch in its attempts to
play with him. |
| Fie 22 |
Track down Blue Dragon from days ago and kill
it by using the Mirror of Opposition trick, but Mirror gets
broken in process. Dragon lair produces very little loot, disappointment
leads to lots of argument over what to do next. |
| Fie 23 |
Speak With Dead on Dragon finds its hoard
is somewhere called Partichelle, and an amulet it was wearing
provides means to get there. Soon learn that Partichelle is
a plane of Hell. |
| Back to Assassin camp; more have arrived, so kill
these off and leave. |
| Fie 27 |
Arrive Muraan, start a long treasury break and
training for everyone except Throy, Mrikle and Diora. |
| Lei 757 |
Various Party Clerics start getting divine messages
concerning the symbol Lafeen wore; it is holy to a nasty sleeping
god who is in process of awakening, and Party might have to
stop this from happening. |
| Lei 18 |
Pearl resurrected. By now, Demetrio,
Bartolo, Adamira and Pasqual have all retired. |
Surviving members: Calion(F-5/T-6), Pearl(MU-7/NrC-2),
Throy(F-7), Diora(WrC-6), Chiron(F-6), Myra(B-5), Mrikle(I-6),
Grolsch(T-5[again]),
Darby(MU-5), Trilby(NtC-5), Demetrio(NrC-3),
Maica(NrC-4), Bartolo(NrC-3), Adamira(NrC-3), Pasqual(NrC-3),
Perry(T-0)
New members: Trilby, Demetrio, Maica, Bartolo, Adamira, Pasqual,
Zayvius
Retirees: Demetrio, Bartolo, Adamira, Pasqual; Perry(to Lost
Temple)
Casualties: Zayvius; (Pearl - revived)
Continuing party (to Welcome to the Swamp
II): Calion, Pearl, Throy, Diora, Chiron, Myra, Mrikle,
Grolsch, Darby, Trilby, Maica
So how did Perry come to be in such a mess?
After successfully infiltrating and joining the Black Hand Assassins'
guild (see Black Hand I), Perry was treated like any other new Black
Hand recruit: sent south to a 6-month boot-camp training course
in how to be an effective Assassin. He had borrowed Akasha's Crown
of Telepathy and hidden it under a turban, and with this he sent back
a stream of reports detailing what he was doing and - more importantly
- where he thought he was; only because of this did the rescue party
have any chance at all of later finding him.
This camp, he learned, was operated as something of a joint venture
between several widely-scattered guilds, including the Black Hand
and a guild in Baldur's Gate. He learned a fair bit about those
who ran the day-to-day operation, but knew only there was something
inland that was behind it all. Knowledge of this would come the
hard way, later.
Then, two weeks after he got there, his cover was blown. A random
Detect Magic cast by one of the resident trainers revealed the magic
"turban"; a quick strip-search found the Crown, and it
was confiscated. This alone might not have been so much of a problem,
but when the Crown was turned over to Dolos he tried it out and discovered
what its use was. At this point, Perry was fingered as a spy and
given over to Dolos, who drained him of all his levels and then
used him as a bottomless, if slow, blood bank. Dolos also charmed
Perry, ensuring his non-cooperation if any of his outside contacts
managed to get in touch with him. By the time he was rescued, Perry
was down to Str. 7, Con. 3, and about 0.5 h.p., but bed rest and
good food led to a complete recovery.
25. Welcome to the
Swamp II: Dolos' Revenge (14-3-2;2),
Scori 27-Tari 3 757, AL-JL 02
Background and summary: The Party goes back to the swamp to
clean out the fortress where Perry had been held, and finds its
owner to be a somewhat more significant opponent than first expected.
Starting members (from Welcome to the Swamp
I): Calion(F-5/T-6), Pearl(MU-7/NrC-2), Throy(F-7),
Chiron(F-6), Diora(WrC-6), Myra(B-5),
Mrikle(I-6), Grolsch(T-5), Darby(MU-5),
Trilby(NtC-5), Maica(NrC-4)
| Lei 22 757 |
Metsamo(R-4) joins. |
| Sco 4 |
By now, it is clear Metsamo's services will not
be required right away, so Metsamo retires. (but see
below) |
| Various Party members begin to feel watched over
the next few weeks. |
| Sco 19 |
Leave Muraan, except Throy who has flown south
to pick up Myra from her training. |
Sco 20
|
Diora hears a voice in her head; it is Dolos,
taunting her. He has been scrying Party for weeks, hence paranoia
about being watched. |
| Darby lightning-bolts the ocean to kill some bait
for marlin fishing, then fails to catch any marlin. |
| Sco 21 |
A very bored Party gets into an argument over
a missing fishhook. |
| Sco 22 |
Throy and Myra show up. Diora ignores Dolos
trying to talk to her. Party arrives at fortress, then rests
for a day and a half. |
| Sco 24 |
Frontal assault on fortress entrance. Diora
gets charmed to Dolos and would remain so for most of adventure.
Throy poisoned but Trilby fixes this, then Party retreats having
made good no ground. |
| A strange blue light in forest heralds arrival
of some people here to drop off a new Party member: Tylara Drumold(F-6)
joins. The couriers, Lanefan and Helga, then
leave; both would reappear in later adventures. Most of rest
of day spent telling Tylara where she is, as she has just come
from another world: Dafan. There, she, Lanefan, and Helga had
just escaped a world-wide cataclysm by means of a Plane Shift
cast by a semi-friendly Hobgoblin named Ell Kara. |
| Sco 25 |
Wade back in to fortress and make lots of progress,
defeat (but do not slay) Dolos; Trilby uses a Bead of Force
to stop Dolos from splitting Party in half and probably saves
several lives by so doing. |
| Throy puts on some cursed armour and turns Evil;
Pearl charms him and saves Party a big headache. |
| Dolos shows up again, Throy loses 2 levels (to
F-5). Defeat Dolos again but still do not kill. |
| Grolsch killed; falls into pit through
illusionary floor. |
| Dolos' forces strike back; Maica killed
and everyone else hammered by 3 expert Assassins. |
| A high-level Fighter (F-11, 122 h.p.) shows up;
Party in no condition to fight him but Chiron manages to get
him talking, then Tylara and Trilby combine to slay him before
he gets a swing in. |
| Battered Party presses forward, finds Dolos' tomb,
and kills him - this time for real. In his lair is Akasha's
Crown of Telepathy, loaned to Perry long ago. (for some, this
is the reason they came here to start with) |
| Throy breaks Pearl's charm and becomes a nuisance;
ends up disarmed, disarmoured, and tied up. |
| Diora snaps out of charm. Party find lots of
booty. |
| Sco 26 |
Throy gets free of bonds during night and once
again has to be subdued. |
| Find and rescue several prisoners; Calion realizes
one is a part-Vampire and slays it on the spot. |
| Sco 27 |
Spend whole day resting and field-testing items.
Throy finally back to normal. |
| Sco 28 |
Find another treasure room. Diora and Trilby
both nearly killed by separate traps triggered by Calion. |
| A small winged furry snake is found in a cage,
so Ssthisss(NtC-3) joins as a quasi-hench to Pearl. |
| Evil aura of place is hampering Cleric spells,
so Pearl sacrifices some things; generates a magic potato that
allows Clerics to function normally here. |
| Tar 1 |
Find 3 Nightmares in stables, argue over whether
to try and tame them but end up killing all. |
| Tar 2 |
Clear out remainder of fortress, trash its temple
and some other bits, and leave. |
| Tar 4 |
Arrive Muraan. Grolsch raised. Throy
gets his levels restored and bumps (to F-8) in the process. |
| Tar 6 |
Perry gets restored (to MU-0/T-0), then restored
again (to MU-3/T-4). With this, a huge argument begins over
who should pay for these restores, whether Perry gets a treasury
share, and so on. |
| Grolsch and Darby retire. |
Surviving members: Calion(F-5/T-6), Pearl(MU-7/NrC-2),
Throy(F-8), Chiron(F-6), Diora(WrC-6), Myra(B-6), Mrikle(I-7),
Grolsch(T-5),
Darby(MU-6), Trilby(NtC-5), Tylara(F-6),
Ssthisss(NtC-3), Metsamo(R-4)
New members: Metsamo, Ssthisss; Tylara(from Dafan)
Retirees: Metsamo (to Lost Temple);
Grolsch, Darby
Casualties: Maica; (Grolsch - raised)
Continuing party (to Lost Temple of Tharizdun):
Calion, Pearl, Throy, Chiron, Diora, Myra, Mrikle, Trilby, Tylara,
Ssthisss
And what becomes of Metsamo?
Knowing the Party didn't need him, and using such information
the Party could produce about this sleeping god and where He might
be found, Metsamo heads off to that area to scout. On Scori 16
he meets another Ranger in the same area doing the same thing, and
they join forces, so Aqliea(R-4) joins. After gathering
much useful information, they get back to Muraan on Scori 28. But
there is no sign of the Party, so off they go again east to some
Hobbits who might have more insight into this god. The Party is
waiting for them in Muraan when they get back, and they then lead
Party to their next adventure.
28. Lost Temple of
Tharizdun (19-7-3;9), Tari 8-Prici
15 and Prici 26-Aqui 28 757, JL 02-JA 03
Background and summary: Omens and portents of all kinds are
indicating the sleeping menace Tharizdun - a much-feared god in
his day - is stirring, and will awaken by spring equinox if not
stopped. Pearl, Diora and Trilby get personal warnings from their
deities and assume this to mean they and their companions are to
be responsible for preventing this, and in this they are correct.
So, using the information Metsamo has gathered while everyone else
was dealing with Dolos, the Party heads off into the mountains.
Once here, they find that Tharizdun's imminent reawakening is attracting
all sorts of other nasty wildlife, and Party has to bash its way through
to Tharizdun's temple; the in-Party bickering grows ever nastier
all the way. Then, lots more fighting is required to secure the
place, and the Party casualties mount while the arguing continues.
Finally, they find their way to the deep crypt where Tharizdun rests,
and are able to make that rest permanent - they hope.
Starting members (from Welcome to the Swamp
II): Calion(F-5/T-6), Pearl(MU-7/NrC-2), Throy(F-8),
Chiron(F-6), Diora(WrC-6), Myra(B-6),
Mrikle(I-7), Trilby(NtC-5), Tylara(F-6),
Ssthisss(NtC-3)
(from pre-scouting missions):
Metsamo(R-4), Aqliea(R-4)
(from Welcome to
the Swamp I): Perry(MU-3/T-4)
| Tar 10 757 |
The argument over funding of Perry's restorations
finally concludes with Andrew and Gorlim agreeing
to cover some of the cost; Trilby floats the cash for now. |
| Metsamo and Aqliea arrive in Muraan
and join, much information is shared, and Party leaves
town. |
| Tar 11 |
A Darby trick resolves and Calion becomes Caliona
once again. Pearl also tries it, and becomes Perl.
Both get back to normal within a few days, through well-applied
curse removal spells. |
| Tar 23 |
Get into mountains, start finding things to fight.
Perry charms an Orc that, although smart, knows nothing of what
Party is here for. |
| Tar 24 |
A pair of Red Dragons make for an interesting
overnight. Some people bump. Big argument over whether to
try and find lair of Dragons. |
| Tar 25 |
Throy flies off alone to lair but finds very
little once there. Rest of Party bash their way back to road. |
| Pri 15 |
Arrive Baldur's Gate; lots of people train. (Thr.
to F-8, Cal. to F-6, Mri. to I-7, Dio. to WrC-7, Tri. to NtC-6,
Myr. to B-6). Tylara (see below) and Myra retire. |
| Pri 25 |
Leave Baldur's Gate. |
| Aqu 5 |
Meet some Elves on road; two are Alcavron
and Florelli, ex-companions of Tylara's from her world. |
| Aqu 10 |
Back in mountains; 15 Ogres present little challenge
except Diora nearly kills Perry with a "fear" effect
near a clifftop. |
| Throy and Calion charge a Giant, put 58 points
damage into it with 2 simultaneous bowshots but cannot kill
it before it escapes. |
| Aqu 12 |
5 Giants prove a handful, but everyone survives. |
| Aqu 13 |
Throy flies around scouting, reports hearing
a Dryad's voice in some trees a few miles away. |
| Aqu 14 |
Throy flies off into a raincloud and gets lost.
Meanwhile, an away team of Pearl, Diora, Aqliea and Trilby go
to investigate this Dryad:
o "Dryad" turns
out to be a Lamia, with a couple of Leucrotta buddies;
o Aqliea gets clobbered,
Diora flees (but returns to cure Aqliea), Pearl becomes front
line (!);
o Aqliea, incurable at
5 h.p., stops and heroically holds off both Leucrottas (kills
one) so others can get clear, but Aqliea killed in the
process;
o Diora holds off Lamia
until Pearl's spells can kill it, it dies just as rest of Party
arrive. |
| Throy returns hours later with no idea where he
has been. |
| A lost Cavalier shows up and Party takes her in,
so Nigella Seaglass(Cvr-4) joins on Pip, her trusty steed. |
| Diora throws Death Prayer on Aqliea and
crumbles corpse to dust. |
|
A couple more people arrive invisibly and start talking to
Party, and are found huddled under Pip trying to stay dry,
thus Nievyeola ("Nivvy") Crosa(T-4) and Volker
Niemander(A-4) join. Things get messy:
o Trilby casts Detect
Evil, pulls Volker, and tells Calion;
o Calion immediately
attacks Volker: Volker killed;
o Diora immediately starts
preparations to raise Volker while an enormous argument breaks
out (fortunately for all, perhaps, there is no local wildlife
around to hear the shouting);
o Volker raised
by Diora despite Calion's best attempts to interrupt;
o Nivvy tries to defend
Diora-Volker from Calion, so Nivvy killed;
o Throy almost kills
Volker again but Trilby's Death's Door saves him;
o Perry webs up the whole
affair while everyone inside yells at each other, Chiron roams
around carving people out of web, and by the time web wears
off most people have settled down. Meanwhile, Nigella is
wondering what sort of madhouse she has stepped into.
(Volker joined, died, and came
back within the first 15 minutes of his played career.)
|
| Aqu 15 |
Perry thinks he charms Volker but doesn't; Volker
fakes it well for a while. Much of day spent debating ethics
and morals. For some reason Nivvy's corpse is ignored, and
later left behind. |
| Volker takes on Skaldi as his deity and Diora
as his employer. He also renounces his Assassin class, thus
becoming T-4. |
| Aqu 16 |
Throy and Metsamo fly off and actually find the
Lost Temple. Everyone else finds 21 Ogres, then spend long
enough arguing over an ambush plan that Throy and Metsamo are
able to return. |
| After everyone finally agrees on a plan, Throy
and Calion butcher it in the first round. Party takes out most
of the Ogres, however. |
| Pip gets polymorphed into a dog so he'll be able
to fit in the temple. |
| Aqu 17 |
Throy goes scouting and gets lost again; Pearl
and Mrikle have to go out and find him. |
| Aqu 18 |
Ssthisss goes scouting, flies over Temple and
gets "feared", then flies headfirst into a cliff:
Ssthisss killed as he bleeds to death before Pearl can
find him. Pearl does, however, find a back door into Temple. |
| Party wades into Temple and - despite much paranoia
caused by the hideous interior decorating - manage to make good
lots of ground and get in lots of fights with the occupants. |
| Aqu 19 |
Trilby and Diora find they have trouble praying
for spells in Temple. |
| Metsamo has a bad day. He gets paralyzed in each
of the Party's first two battles, then Metsamo killed
in the third one by a blinded Giant who was otherwise only doing
a fine job of annihilating his own friends. |
| Pip-as-dog killed, much to Nigella's displeasure. |
| Party mounts an impressive and well-planned assault
upstairs; all goes well until Pearl casts a fireball into the
chapel and summons a Demon, which wreaks some havoc before finally
dying. Retreat downstairs. |
| A wandering Dwarf arrives and Party takes him
in, so Moray son of Thingol Greataxe(F-8) joins. |
| Aqu 21 |
Another assault upstairs, lots more battles.
Out of one of these, the Party takes a Gnoll captive, thus Gruff(F-2)
joins. |
| Party interrupts a circle of 10 Tharizdun Clerics
in mid-ritual; their failed spell generates a wild magic surge
that disenchants all magic in the room. Party members
lose over 200,000 g.p. in a heartbeat. |
| During resulting battle, both Perry and Moray
manage to fumble into Nigella in the same round. |
| Lots of exploring, find cells with prisoners;
one is significant, so Teldroll Storis(F-8/T-10) joins. |
| Aqu 22 |
More exploring, then Teldroll killed by
some giant wolves. (this is actually good for the Party,
as Teldroll was planning to rob them blind when chance
allowed) |
| Much to everyone's relief, the disenchanted magic
items re-enchant themselves 24 hours after the surge. |
| Wade through rest of Temple, then rest; Diora
thwarted at every turn in her attempts to kill off Gruff. |
| Aqu 23 |
Explore outside. A Norker runs away; Chiron
chases it around a corner and gets smoked by boulders from Giants,
so Chiron killed. |
| While everyone else chases off the Giants, Chiron
raised on the spot by Diora. Then, all retreat to Temple. |
| Diora and Volker spend the night together. |
| Aqu 24 |
Metsamo and Ssthisss raised by
Diora. |

these, but lots of people gain stat. points: Throy +1 Cha.,
Pearl +1 Int., Perry +1 Dex., Moray +1 Str., Calion +1 Dex.
Retreat. Diora and Volker still can't manage to kill Gruff. |
| Nigella and Metsamo rise as undead that night
but don't last very long. |
| Aqu 26 |
Lots of planning before final assault on Tharizdun's
resting place, then Diora takes all of Party's best magic items,
goes in, and breaks the little ball holding Tharizdun's life
force. Party leaves. Temple collapses. |

with how Gruff has been treated; he hires Gruff as his hench
to get him away from this Party. |
| Tou 20 |
Diora-Volker wedding. Amazingly, nobody dies.
Volker retires and starts his three-year Cleric training. |

And what does Tylara get up to next?
After leaving the Party, Tylara meets up with Ancalidon and
spends several months in Waterdeep learning psyonics from him, finishing
on Touri 20. She then journeys back to Baldur's Gate, and finds
Alcavron and Florelli - also expatriate Dafanites
- in a forest near here, and these three join forces and head north
in search of other Dafanites who might have made it to this world.
By mid-Canne they make it back to Waterdeep; Tylara does some more
psyonic training while Flo. and Alc. make inquiries; they learn
that another ex-Dafanite - Fredregar Overhill - passed through
town about half a year ago and was making much the same inquiries.
Hearing this, Tylara commissions a number of distinctive coins to
be given to the Dafanites, so she can communicate psyonically with
them.
By late Verga, the three Elves have made it to Riveria, and on
Fieth 3 they arrive at Verwood and are reunited with Helga.
Alcavron and Florelli almost immediately settle down in Linithe
Wood, while Tylara gets to know people at the Keep. On Fieth 7,
she and Llandreesa meet; what starts as a good old cat-fight
leads to both becoming extremely drunk and forming a solid friendship!
The next morning, a very hungover Tylara and her new Party leave
the Keep, for what becomes Alpha 5.
33. Asgeir's Saga A:
Loki's Torch (12-2-1;1), Touri 21-28
757, JA-MR 03
Background and summary: Via Throy, the Thain of Luskan hires
Party to travel to a nearby island and there find and recover -
if they can - something called Loki's Torch. The island has been
cursed by Loki such that no Norse may approach within a mile, but
as none of the Party are Norse this is a non-issue. So off they
go, and without too much difficulty they recover the Torch - a sword,
in fact, that brightly glows and adds a lot to the wielder's Charisma
- but in so doing they realize there may be much more to this, as
the sword has a short rhyme inscribed on it that ultimately starts
the Party on a lengthy series of adventures.
Starting members (from Lost Temple of Tharizdun):
Calion(F-6/T-7), Pearl(MU-7/NrC-3), Throy(F-8), Chiron(F-7),
Diora(WrC-7), Mrikle(I-7),
Trilby(NtC-6), Metsamo(R-5), Perry(MU-4/T-5),
Nigella(Cvr-5)
(picked up en route): Lanefan(F-8),
Veraska(Mk-5)
| Tou 20 757 |
After wedding, Luskan's Thain calls Throy aside,
explains Loki's Torch situation to him, and requests his Party
to retrieve it. Request is aided by promise of "a few
thousand" g.p. if successful. |
| Tou 21 |
Party sail for island, get mugged by 13 Owlbears
while getting off their boat |
| Advance inland, find and assault Owlbear village;
Calion gets overextended and finds out the hard way that Owlbears
have spellcasters: Calion killed. |
| Lots of post-mortem argument over whether Veraska,
who was relatively nearby, could have saved Calion. |
| Paranoia increases when a random Detect Evil
pulls half the Party; an earlier Diora spell caused this. |
| Tou 23 |
To ruins via clearing out some local wildlife.
|
| While everyone else decides what to do, Throy
"climbs like a bird" to roof, falls through, gets
attacked, and is lucky to escape. |
| Explore ruins. Throy finds a Trapper the hard
way and almost gets killed. Several Golems prove a minor nuisance,
but Trilby manages to gain control of a Flesh Golem and orders
it to guard Party's rear. |
| Pearl fireballs several Party members including
herself while trying to take out a Lurker. |
| Diora throws Speak With Dead on Calion
and makes him say the command word to Throy's carpet; half of
Party immediately start individually making plans to steal it,
and Throy gets very paranoid. |
| Trilby discovers that he is psyonic. |
| Tou 24 |
Continue marauding through ruins, killing anything
that moves. |
| Conversation with Oraegir, a skeleton hanging
on a wall, provides lots of useful info. |
| Tou 25 |
Trilby gains a wish and blows it: he wishes the
world was rid of Evil, and succeeds only in plane-shifting himself
to Mimosa's home world, thus Trilby leaves. |
| Throy gets fed up waiting for Diora to raise Calion,
and takes him to the mainland instead. |
| Tou 26 |
Perry sneaks into a treasure room and finds Loki's
Torch; it is a sword, and on it is inscribed a poem:
Follow this path or forever be doomed:
Climb to the depths of the air.
Fili the Fool failed, fulfilling his
fate
He lies at the base of the stair. |
| Pearl flies to Luskan to intercept Throy; ends
up having to charm him to prevent him getting in fights with
half the temples he visits. They return to Party. |
| Calion raised in Luskan. |
| Tou 27 |
Pearl and Throy back to Luskan; Pearl back to
Party, Throy and Calion start investigating Torch, poem, and
Thain. |
| Tou 28 |
Pearl to Luskan again, meets with Lambi, a sage;
learns a lot about Asgeir, the Torch, and how they relate.. |
| Jem 1 |
Throy realizes he is Quested to find Asgeir |
|
Party return to Luskan and give Torch to Thain, are disappointed
with his paltry reward, and start a fast treasury and training
break.

34. Asgeir's Saga B: The Journal of Groa Snowshaper
(15-1-0;3), Jema 2-8 and Jema 9-Canne 11 757,
AL-MA 03
Background and summary: The Party now seeks information about
this Fili person mentioned in the poem on Loki's Torch, and soon
learn the best place to find it might be from someone named Groa,
who actually knew and adventured with Fili some 50 years ago. However,
their approach is anything but organized; while most people train
and-or take a break, Throy and Metsamo head off on their own for
where they think Groa might be found and succeed only in getting
themselves killed. So the Party's next mission is to bail them
out. Then, arguing all the way, the whole group heads up and after
much mayhem find Groa's old cottage high in the Arctic mountains,
and her journal that tells of Fili's last days and what the Party
now needs in order to finish what Groa and Fili could not.

Throy and Metsamo arrive at village of Hjorth,
get some info from locals. |
| Jem 7 |
Fly north into mountains. A White Dragon attacks:
Throy and Metsamo killed. |

Psyonic contact can't find Throy or Metsamo;
concern mounts, and Helga (already in the area) is asked
to detour to Hjorth and find out what happened if she can. |

Helga reaches Hjorth, gets a vague idea of events
and (correctly) guesses the rest; psyonics relay info to Party
in Luskan. |

S'nel'be, and Myra (who rejoins) leaves Luskan. |
| Jem 15 |
Rescue team reaches Hjorth. Helga reaches Luskan,
and eventually rejoins her own Party. |
| Jem 16 |
Rescue team enter mountains and meet a secretive
local: Mikalla Czak(R-10) joins. |
| Find place where Metsamo died, but no sign of
any corpse. |
| Jem 17 |
Find place where Throy died; his carpet's here,
but again no corpse. |
| Encounter a small community of Flugormr, one of
whom is Ssthisss(NtC-4), who rejoins. He points
team in direction of Dragon's lair. |
| A well-planned sequence lures Dragon out of its
lair; it is then slain with little trouble. |
| To lair, find Throy and Metsamo skulls and a small
amount of loot. |
| Jem 18 |
Speak With Dead on Metsamo reveals he
would like to stay that way (though his will says otherwise). |
| A highly valuable gem from Dragon's hoard goes
missing, provoking much argument. (in fact, Mikalla
stole it and hid it half a mile away; see here for Mikalla's
story) |
| S'nel'be and Lanefan take Throy's skull and leave
by carpet; rest of team stays put. |

Trilby flies south and buries Metsamo's skull
in forest. |
| Throy, still determined to follow Metsamo's will
to the letter, flies off and tries to find Metsamo's skull to
get him resurrected, but cannot, and is psyonically called back
to Party later that day. |
| Ssthisss retires. |
| Party heads up valley, defeat an Ice Hydra but
have trouble with some Frost Giants: Perry killed. |
| Can 8 |
Shoot down an Yrthak, a large and very strange
creature that operates by sound alone. |
Out of the blue, Darby(MU-6) rejoins and
causes great mayhem:
o Darby fireballs invisible
Calion and Myra, much to their annoyance;
o He then tries to put
a cloak on Calion to change his gender, but Calion fights back
- and a wild magic surge changes Calion's gender anyway! Thus,
Calion becomes Caliona yet again;
o He (falsely) claims credit
for an illusionary Giant Party has seen not far away, causing
great confusion later; (the illusion was put there by Groa
many years ago, to scare off intruders)
o Thanking Party for their
contribution to his Skaldi Cleric training (!), he then
leaves: Darby retires. |
| Shaking their heads, Party carries on until Chiron
nearly gets swallowed whole by a Remorhaz. Myra loses a magic
sword, and Chiron needs Death's Door to survive, but
Remorhaz killed. |
| Can 9 |
Caliona becomes Calion via Diora's curse
removal. |
| Party watches a battle between some Giants and
some Ettins, then mops up what's left. |
| Find Groa's hut, and her journal, and her ghost!
Lots of useful info given here (see below) in between
the bickering, and Party learn they now need something called
the Heart of Asgeir. |

Groa Snowshaper's tale:
During the winter of 725, a small adventuring Company called
the Wolves were busy in the high north, doing goodly deeds and slowly
earning a decent name for themselves. At one point, this little
Company - which included Groa(NtC/F), Fili(F), Gudrun(R), Taffey(B),
and Thingvall(MU/T) - visited the Ruins of Trakand as one of their
adventures, and thought they cleaned it out. In truth (and probably
just as well, for them) they missed most of it, but got far enough
to find a book called "Asgeir's Cloud". In hindsight,
this book was clearly a Loki-planted curse, but at the time the
Wolves were blissfully unaware, even when Fili - hardly a literary
sort - read the book and became somewhat obsessed with it.
Using information contained in the book, Fili led the Wolves
to the base of an invisible stairway that seemed to lead up into
the clouds above. But when they tried to climb up, the stairs completely
vanished once everyone was 100' or so off the ground; Fili and Taffey
were killed by the resulting fall, and Gudrun and Thingvall both
perished from their injuries within days as for some reason curing
spells had little effect. The sole survivor was Groa, though it
was most likely she - as a Freya Cleric - the curse had been aimed
at all along.
Her spirit nearly broken by this tragedy, Groa retired to her
cottage high in the mountains and set about trying to solve the
puzzle of the book. A few months later, no further ahead and close
to succumbing to the book's curse, she gave up and put the whole
matter in Freya's hands. Freya refused the offered book but granted
Groa the insight she sought: to safely climb the stairs required
possession of the Heart of Asgeir, which the Wolves did not have.
Content with this, Groa burned the book, retired to a long, quiet,
pious life, and - despite her isolation - over time rose rather
high in the ranks of Freya's Clerics. She took an oath to herself,
however, that if any folk of good intent ever came seeking the information
contained in "Asgeir's Cloud" she would freely give it.
None ever came, and Groa - by now a very old lady - died peacefully
in 754.
On Groa's death, Freya held her to her oath: She knew that sooner
or later someone of good heart would seek to free Asgeir and that
Groa's knowledge was an essential requirement to do this, so She
forced Groa to remain in her cottage as a (benevolent) spirit until
such time as she could properly impart this information. Freya
also tinkered with the Heart of Asgeir itself; while She could not
undo what Loki had done, She could and did ensure that none who
found the Heart could learn of its connection to Asgeir unless they
had first spoken to Groa and that Groa had - through Freya - determined
their intentions to be good. (Thus Dahnakriss, despite owning the
Heart for some time, remained ignorant of its true function and
destiny.)
Groa's spirit was released once she had spoken to the Party
as recorded above, and happily rose to Freya's realm where it remains
to this day.
35. Asgeir's Saga C:
The Heart of Asgeir (14-3-3;2), Canne
24-Verga 17 757, JN-OC 03
Background and summary: The Party needs the Heart of Asgeir,
which can be found in a place called the Ruins of Trakand
somewhere east and south of Luskan. Armed with not much more information
than this, the Party sets off, and after many mishaps, strange
events, and arguments they eventually come out with the Heart.
Starting members (from Groa's Journal):
Calion(F-6/T-7), Pearl(MU-8/NrC-3), Throy(F-8), Chiron(F-7),
Diora(WrC-8), Trilby(NtC-7),
Nigella(Cvr-6), Myra(B-6)
(from Sword
of Hope): Serioge(R-7)
| Can 23 757 |
Munin(R-6) joins, recruited by Serioge. |
| Can 24 |
Victor Raul(F-6) joins, recruited by the
Niemanders. Party leaves town. |
| Can 26 |
A few Giants spice up a dull trip but don't last
long. |
| Ver 3 |
Party hear combat through the mist and investigate,
find someone holding off 3 Ogres, and recognize the someone:
Ancalidon Turamarth(P-6) joins (see below). |
| Minor combats slow up the next few days of travel. |
| Ver 5 |
Easily defeat 3 Trolls in a methane-laden swamp.
Pearl casts Flaming Sphere to burn corpses and blows
up whole area: Victor killed (to -69), Munin almost (from
+72 to -6), in a huge magic meltdown that sees about 80,000
g.p. worth of items go up in smoke. Survivors not impressed.
Arguments begin. |
| Ver 7 |
Arrive at what Party thinks are Ruins of Trakand
and wade in after clobbering some local Gryphons. |
| Party learns of a previously-unknown creature
called a Hook Horror by defeating 17 of them in several battles. |
| Ver 8 |
Lots of exploring, several minor battles, lots
of arguing. |
| Ver 9 |
Find an area with various types of Golem. A
deep pit at one point is covered by an illusionary floor; Party
easily see through this but Pearl, still being flayed over the
swamp incident, tries to jump in anyway. She is caught and
hauled back by Throy. |
| A Bronze Golem deliberately breaks a magic item
over Throy's head and starts another huge meltdown -
not quite as costly, however, as most of the good stuff went
up in the last one. |
| Find a prisoner and take her in, so Germanica(MU-6)
joins and gives good info about the resident Wizard. |
| Wizard shows up and tries to kidnap Pearl; Germanica
notices and Myra catches. Meanwhile, Chiron has bashed his
way into a hidden treasure chamber only to get whaled on by
an Earth Elemental. |
| Elemental (summoned by Wizard) and Wizard slain,
Party gleefully dives into an enormous hoard. |
| Trilby rubs a bottle and summons an Efreeti: gets
3 wishes; uses first to get Heart of Asgeir (this works), but
next 2 are wasted in attempts to recover items lost in swamp
explosion. Trilby then fails to release Efreeti fast enough
(it is very annoyed at being held captive) so it turns
on him: Trilby killed. Efreeti escapes before rest of
Party can kill it, and is not seen again. |
| The owner of both the complex and Heart - Dahnakriss
- sends in a couple of Frost Giants and then comes in himself;
somehow, all are slain by the battered Party. |
| Ver 10 |
Trilby raised by Diora. Party rests for
a few days. |
| Ver 12 |
An away team of Calion, Throy, Ancalidon, Germanica,
Myra and Serioge head off to where they now know a gem to be;
this gem is why Ancalidon is here at all. Trilby follows, discreetly. |
| A couple of Basilisks and some animated statues
are taken out with some good planning. Gem found. |
| Pearl and Ancalidon teleport to Waterdeep: Ancalidon
retires. Rest of Party reunites. |
| Ver 13 |
Find a new level and take out a Frost Giant;
Throy finds another and starts in on it as well but rest of
Party realize it is not an enemy. In between the resulting
arguments, some people have a good conversation with Blug -
the artist Giant - then leave him be. |
| Ver 14 |
Pearl returns and brings Mrikle(I-8),
who rejoins. |
| Ver 15 |
Throy reads a cursed scroll and turns into a
Pixie. Diora fixes this, after much chuckling. |
| Explore most of complex, and field-test lots of
new items. |
| Somebody (Trilby?) goes outside and triggers a
quest on some people far away by so doing. |
| Ver 16 |
Try to leave complex, find Blug dead just outside
and get ambushed by some Hobgoblins, then spend the whole day
tracking someone around in circles. (this is Mikalla, who
set the ambush hoping the Party would be much weaker
than it was; this fails, so he lays down lots of false trails
and flees north) |
| Party retreats and hides in Ruins. |
| Ver 17 |
Party leaves Ruins and heads north. |
Surviving members: Calion(F-7/T-7), Pearl(MU-8/NrC-3),
Throy(F-8), Chiron(F-7), Diora(WrC-8), Myra(B-6), Trilby(NtC-7),
Nigella(Cvr-7), Serioge(R-7), Ancalidon(P-6),
Munin(R-6), Germanica(MU-6), Mrikle(I-8)
New members: Ancalidon(from Swordquest
via A-Series); Munin, Victor, Germanica
Retirees: Ancalidon
Casualties: Victor (revived later); (Trilby - raised)
Continuing party (to Stairway to Heaven):
Calion, Pearl, Throy, Chiron, Diora, Mrikle, Myra, Trilby, Nigella,
Munin, Germanica, Serioge
And why was Ancalidon here?
While wandering the countryside looking for goodly deeds to do
and evil foes to vanquish, Ancalidon at one point happened to pass
through a small village some 60 miles north of Waterdeep. Here,
he was asked to help out the villagers with a problem: somehow,
the village had become cursed such that one resident was dying every
4 days. The villagers knew that something called the Blue
Gem of Healing would fix their problem, but had no idea where to
even begin to look for it or whether any of them would survive long
enough.
In true Paladinic form, Ancalidon took this mission on as a personal
quest. He used both his religious and psyonic contacts to learn
everything he could about the situation, and eventually discovered
the Gem was probably in or near something called the Ruins of Trakand,
far to the north. So off he went, and had almost reached the Ruins when
the Party came upon him; realizing their goals were at least somewhat
intertwined, he and the Party joined forces for the time being.
Once the Gem was found, Ancalidon had Pearl teleport him to
Waterdeep, and from there he rode hard to the village to present
the Healing Gem to its residents. It seemed to work, as the villagers
stopped dying like clockwork soon after.
36. Asgeir's Saga D:
Stairway to Heaven (16-1-1;1), Verga
18-Fieth 11 757, OC-NO 03
Background and summary: The recovery of the Heart of Asgeir
triggers a quest, on everyone that survived the Loki's
Torch adventure, to climb the invisible stairway and present
the Heart to Asgeir. Various people suffer various mishaps
trying to get there from far away, while the main Party holds off
Mikalla's final duplicity, climbs the stairway, and restores
Asgeir to her former self. The Party then have to take a detour
to the south to bail out Lanefan, who managed to get himself
captured into slavery en route to answer the quest. This done,
everyone takes a well-earned break and lots of people retire outright.

| Ver 15 757 |
Perry, Lanefan, and Veraska all get quested
and start independently trying to find out what's going on;
all soon learn what's up and start heading north. Veraska would
never reach the area as she simply had too far to go; she would
eventually just turn around and head back to Nakki-Nakk. |
| Ver 17 |
Lanefan gets plane-shifted from Verwood to Mirabar
by S'nel'be, who happened to be passing through; starts
riding north from there. |
| Ver 18 |
Perry also gets plane-shifted to Mirabar by S'nel'be.
Lanefan beats back an Orc ambush. |
| Ver 19 |
Party sights and Trilby scouts a Ranger heading
north on a parallel course but do not realize it is Mikalla
in disguise. |
| Diora learns that she is pregnant. |
| Lanefan gets ambushed again, by Goblins this time,
but easily clobbers them all. |
| Perry buys a teleport and reaches east end of
Coldwood, starts heading west to meet Party. |
| Ver 21 |
Reach general area of stairway. Psyonic contact
with Ancalidon reveals his mission to have been successful,
and that Perry is close to Party; later that day, Perry joins.
Serioge leaves to go find Lanefan. |
| Find stairway, notice someone camped nearby. (this
is Mikalla) |
| Lanefan gets mugged yet again, this time by Gnolls;
captured, and taken to a mine camp as a slave. |
| Ver 22 |
A few people approach and talk with Mikalla,
who rejoins - after a fashion. Meanwhile, Trilby finds
Fili's remains at base of stair and gives him a decent burial. |
| All up stairway except Germanica, who stays behind
in case Serioge, Lanefan or Veraska show up. |
Mikalla strikes once everyone is a few hundred
feet above ground:
o Knowing Pearl has the
Heart, he starts trying to throw people off the stairs to get
to her;
o Perry proves to be more
than Mikalla can handle, and both fall off;
o Both use Feather Fall
and float down, each trying to shoot the other (Perry at 0 h.p.);
o Germanica sees this and
hits Mikalla with a Dispel Magic, sending him crashing
to the ground;
o She then finishes him
off with magic missiles before he can get up: Mikalla killed;
o Perry stays with Germanica
as he cannot now climb the stairs. (he doesn't have the Heart) |
| Shortly after this, a minor Air Elemental attacks
those still on stairs and nearly knocks some people off. |
| Reach top of stairs to be greeted by Suurri, an
extremely polite and proper butler - who is a Frost Giant! |
| A maid attacks in a hallway; she is a Vampire,
and quickly slain. |
| Find an insane prisoner under the pool table and
take her in, so Lusia(MU-6) joins. Trilby manages to
get a bit of Lusia's sanity back with some spells. |
| Reach Asgeir's chambers and discover she is a
full Lich. Party tries to retreat (a few flee), but this goes
wrong as well, so finally Pearl gives Asgeir the Heart. This
restores her and her servants to their Human forms and removes
the curse on her house. |
| Asgeir gives Party a big bag of gems for their
trouble. Party returns to base of stairs; shortly after this,
Asgeir's house returns to where it should be, just north of
Mirabar and on the ground. |
| Learn of Lanefan's capture while psyonically trying
to tell him to stand down from quest. |
| Serioge told to turn around, keep going, and stay
put all within a 3-hour span. |
| Speak With Dead on Mikalla tells Party
a bit of his story. (see below for all of it) |
| Ver 23 |
Head southeast, find Serioge during day. Calion,
Serioge and Munin carry on overnight, while Trilby-as-bird scouts
ahead. |

again, but Asgeir - feeling a bit remorseful - agrees to take
her in. Lusia retires. |
| Fie 26 |
Victor resurrected at Mirabar. Victor
retires shortly after. |
| Fie 27 |
A few people try out some very magical dice.
Lanefan gains a level (to F-9), and Lusia gains a spell. |
| Lei 14 758 |
A big pile of items lost in swamp are restored
via Ancalidon getting a wish cast in Waterdeep. |

Mikalla's Story
And who is this Asgeir person, anyway?
Sometime around year 531, Asgeir Olssdottir - a young, bright
and aspiring Mage - began what would become a brilliant career when
she left Luskan on her first adventure. She was at first a devout
Thor follower, though there is no doubt this devotion was helped
by the fact that for their first few adventures their party's Cleric
was to Thor. Be that as it may, their party thrived and after half
a dozen adventures eventually became a full Company in 534. Various
locals took note; the deities by and large could not have cared
less.
By year 538, Asgeir and her Company were really hitting their
stride. They relocated to Mirabar, as there were more adventuring
opportunities there than Luskan and surrounds could provide, and
before long Asgeir - always a Lawful sort - became involved in the
politics of the Mirabar MU's guild when not out in the field. In
fact, by year 540 she was doing more politicking than adventuring,
and was beginning to drift away from her Company.
In 543, her position in the guild now secure, she and a group
of others formed a party and spent the next 4 years roaming through
the far north spilling blood and vanquishing evil - particularly
chaotic evil - at every turn. By the time they returned to civilization
for good in 547, she and her companions were beginning to attract
a little divine attention, and not always welcome; despite her lawfulness,
it is certain she somehow annoyed the great Hobgoblin deity Azak'hri
during this trip - and suffered dearly for it.
She settled down for the next few years. Some say she fell in
love. Of a certainty, she took complete control of the Mirabar MU's
guild and despite her unbending ways the guild thrived on her watch.
But, the call of the adventuring life was too strong, and in 554
- by now fully 16th level - she set out yet again, this time with
a small but very powerful group whose aim was no less lofty than
to remove all the major chaotic influences from the Norse city of
Jaarvikshold. And they almost did it, too.
By the end of 555, Loki's Jaarvikshold temple had been reduced
to rubble, and His followers either converted, killed, or scattered
far and wide. Meanwhile, Asgeir and her companions had barely taken
a scratch; to this day, some suggest they had the backing and protection
of either Heimdall or Thor. In any case, their actions drew Loki's
full and complete attention...and anger.
Early in 556 Asgeir's group disbanded, their work done, and
she returned to her stately home just north of Mirabar. A few months
later, a lone traveller who said he wished to speak with the mighty
mage called by the house, and - as befits custom and politeness
- he was invited in and made welcome. The traveller was Loki Himself,
and He was here to exact revenge the best way He knew how: by playing
a prank.
By the next morning, the house had been placed high in a permanent
cloudbank over a part of the bleak northern plains nobody visited
or even really cared about, and its occupants horribly transformed.
The butler and his staff had become Frost Giants; the scullery maids
and housekeepers were now Vampires, and Asgeir herself - her life
force taken from her and stuffed into a heart-shaped red gem - had
been turned into a full Lich. Loki tossed the gem back onto Riverian
soil, attached the house to ground by an invisible stairway, had
a jolly good laugh at his own handiwork, and left.
To those in Mirabar, it appeared as if Asgeir's house and all
its occupants simply vanished during the night.
To add to the cruelty, everyone in the house retained full memory
of who and what they had been before. Asgeir in particular retained
her powers - but as she had no place to either use them or study
to improve them, she could not enhance her skills. Meanwhile, her
friends and associates back in Mirabar grew old and passed away.
Loki was not through yet, however. He had planted various clues
and hints around the northlands as to where and how Asgeir might
be rescued; knowing that her Lawful allies were the most likely
to try and retrieve her, He figured some of them might get battered
or even killed in the attempt: benefits all round, as far as He
was concerned. And some of the clues were indeed found and followed:
over time, about four dozen adventurers perished either trying to
climb Asgeir's stair or inside her house before she was finally
rescued by the party whose story is told above. Meanwhile, Loki
pretty much forgot about the whole thing shortly after He finished
putting it in place, and went on to cause other mayhem elsewhere.
