Preamble - On Adventuring Companies: Riverian law,
in keeping with laws of some others of the more-orderly lands,
requires that all adventurers be registered either with a recognized
Guild such as Fighters' or Thieves' if remaining in one place,
or with an Adventuring Company if moving around. The reasons for
this are twofold: it allows the authorities to keep track
of who is doing what where, and it makes possible the assessment
of the adventurers' tax known as skaying. This, simply put,
is a tax of about 5% on the value of all booty recovered
from any field adventure in Riverian lands, or brought in from adventuring
elsewhere.
As Riveria has a reasonable government, most adventurers end
up paying the skay (though grumbling all the while) as the
value of a safe land to come home to makes it worthwhile. Given
this, the tendency turns toward taking real pride in the
name, achievements and reputation of one's Company, and many such
Companies have earned great fame as well as great fortune
during their careers. Names like the Men of White, the Cutters,
the Shining Band, the Steel Maidens, and many others ring
down through the years as the tales of their exploits grow
in the telling and retelling, and many a novice adventurer hopes
to one day catch on - even in a small way - with one of these
famous outfits. Most, however, end up forming their own little
Companies and doing what they can to earn a living and a
reputation. A few succeed, while a great many die in the attempt.
A very rare public recruitment meeting for one of these famous
large Companies is where the campaign begins.
1. Temple of Gruumsh
(10-10-7;2), Verga 1-27 754, AU 95-FE
96
Background and summary: A near-legendary adventuring Company
called the Shining Band, not heard from in decades, puts
on a large and widely-advertised recruitment drive for new members.
A meeting of 102 hopefuls takes place on midsummer day in
Riveria City amidst much fevered anticipation. Of these 102, 49
are taken aside "for further training" as they
are deemed not yet fit for the field, 46 are divided up into 6 adventuring
parties, and 7 are called up and publicly denounced as untrustworthy
before being booted out of the meeting. Three of these seven
- Thomas, Gamford, and most notably Llandreesa the Elf - would later
become significant.
None of the 49 "trainees" was ever seen again; see
Against the Slavers background for more details on this.
One of the six adventuring parties thus created is that whose
tale begins here and eventually widens to become the campaign.
The Party's assignment, given as a test to prove their worthiness
(or, that's what they were told) is relatively simple: go
into the Ravenwood, get through the illusion hiding the old ruins
there, and come back after making a good map of it all.
So they secure directions to the place, and off they go; and eventually
- after finding things far more difficult and dangerous than
they had ever been led to expect - back they come to report
a job dutifully done with a map to prove it.
As all six parties had in fact been sent out on somewhat-disguised
suicide missions, the successful return of this group comes
as something of a shock to the Shining Band - never mind this Party
returns with more members than it had to begin with - but
the Band covers well, for now.
Starting members: Dibs Deerfoot(NtC-1), Fundin of the Opal Caverns(WrC-1),
Calion Voronwe(F-1/T-1), Drogmac son of Libmazadam(WrC-1),
Sharana of Windy Vale(F-1), Lirien of Thornwood(MU-1/T2),
Nildhevin Elcaron(NtC-1/I-1)
| Ver 1 754 |
Shining Band recruitment meeting
in Riveria City; 102 neophyte adventurers attend:
o 49 attendees called
aside for further training (none would ever be seen alive
again);
o 7 people called up
and publicly denounced as untrustworthy; some look it, others
don't, all are booted out (but some - Llandreesa,
Thomas, Gamford - re-appear later);
o this Party put together
as one of six, each is given a different mission and deadline;
o informed of skay tax,
registered, and sent on their way. |
| Ver 3 |
First combat, against bandits, while travelling north -
Sharana nearly kills Lirien with fumble.
Calion falls off a 70-foot cliff, grabs tree roots, is
lucky to be heard and rescued by rest of Party.
|
| Ver 5 |
Dibs buys Perry the Falcon in Durweston, by day's end already
realizes it isn't very bright.
Reach adventure site; Lirien and Drogmac almost killed
by 2 Orc archers.
|
| Ver 6 |
Fundin solves a riddle so Party
can get into complex; Drogmac almost killed again, by spiders.
Retreat. |
| Ver 7 |
Riddle wall resets to a different riddle; Drogmac solves
while rest of Party gets carved up by Orcs.
Once inside, much exploring finds a few foes, and Fundin
killed by a trap.
Dibs finds and purifies a 328-year-old half-keg of beer.
Party finds a lower level and befriends Brick, a starving
Orc; he guides their explorations for a while.
A gang of Orcs arrives and traps Party in armoury; Lirien
killed, along with Brick, and Sharana to -9.
Slowly begin to realize not all the Orcs here are unfriendly;
one guard lets Party escape, which they gladly do only to
be attacked upstairs by Dibs' forgotten and now very hungry
falcon.
|
| Ver 8 |
More discussions with friendly Orcs
reveal this site more important - and active - than first
thought; Party decides to retreat and rethink, then gets thrashed
in forest by 6 Goblins. |
| Ver 9 |
Party retreats all the way to village
of Sachem, there stumble on Llandreesa who is already
suspicious of the Shining Band folk; Party offers to take
her in but she declines - for now. |
| Ver 10 |
A second party arrives in town and
merges with this one, thus Throy(F-1), Arrabella Vopnfjord(R-1)
and Pearl Jam(MU-1) all join; they had arrived
in Riveria too late for the Band meeting, and carried on north
seeking adventure wherever they could find it. |
| Ver 11 |
Return to adventure site, get jumped
by Orcs and almost wiped out, turn around and limp back to
Sachem. |
| Ver 14 |
Another foray to complex, attack
some more Orcs and almost get wiped out, limp back to Sachem
again. |
| Ver 17 |
Return to complex once more, and
scout; Dibs finally getting somewhere in training his falcon. |
| Ver 18 |
A sentient bush nearly kills Pearl, Sharana, and Drogmac;
its trunk is so tough Throy breaks his flamberge trying
to cut it down.
Arrabella finds some coins in a pool, gets greedy, and
takes all of them; Party plunged into pool as punishment,
but saved when Arrabella puts the coins back. (pool probably
a shrine to a water goddess)
|
| Ver 19 |
Another sentient bush doesn't last as long as the first
one.
Exploration reveals this complex doesn't entirely obey
the laws of physics; either that, or it is its own little
demi-plane.
Fundin's body recovered and buried in garden where first
sentient bush had stood.
|
| Ver 20 |
Venture into lower level, get beaten
back by Orcs again, rest. |
| Ver 21 |
Arrabella discovers link between
Orcs and local militia; militia deny it when confronted later
by Sharana. |
| Ver 22 |
Yet another venture to lower level; Party gets thrashed
but finally gains a beachhead, and a captive Orc.
Captive, Malkoc, tells much about complex; it still takes
a command spell to get the leader's name: Sylune.
|
| Ver 23 |
Orcs attack as Party tries to leave; Malkoc tries to help
them and gets killed for his trouble, Party escapes.
Return to Sachem, weather unnaturally hot, and Dibs' Precipitation
spells fail twice.
Report to local militia but intentionally don't mention
knowledge of the link with the Orcs (and thus cause many
headaches later; see Gruumsh's
Revenge).
|
| Ver 24 |
To Durweston, learn local Arevane
Clerics cannot cast spells at all. Party leaves town. |
| Ver 26 |
Party meets various important-looking people rushing north
in hopes of meeting Arevane, who had manifested in Portloe
this morning for some reason or other and not in a good
mood.
Arrive Riveria; Shining Band people surprised to see Party
but cover well, congratulating them on a job well done and
putting Band (i.e. their own) resources at Party's disposal
to help evaluate treasury.
|
| Fie 22 |
By now, Party knows that parts of two other Shining Band
proto-parties made it back from their missions and have
since been combined and sent out again; none would return.
Drogmac, now trained to WrC-2, becomes concerned about
his brother.
|
Surviving members: Dibs(NtC-1), Calion(F-1/T-1), Drogmac(WrC-2),
Sharana(F-1), Nildhevin(NtC-1/I-1), Throy(F-1), Arrabella(R-1),
Pearl(MU-1)
New members: Throy, Arrabella, Pearl
Casualties: Fundin, Lirien
Retirees: none
Continuing party (to Deadman's
Island): Dibs, Calion, Drogmac, Sharana, Nildhevin, Throy,
Arrabella, Pearl
2. Deadman's Island
(16-8-4;10),
Fieth 23 754-Leirn 20 755, FE-MA 96
Background and summary: Drogmac's brother Gormac was also assigned
to a party at the midsummer recruitment meeting, and now
- over a month later - neither he nor any of his group have returned.
This, coupled with some local sailors reporting strange happenings
on the tiny island that group was sent to, spurs Drogmac and
friends to go out after him. Their mentors in the Shining Band
encourage this (as it provides another chance for the Party
to die) and so off they go. They wind up on a small and very strange
island, and after suffering many casualties manage to clean
it out, finding the remains of Gormac and most of his party in the
process.
Once back in town, they begin to have serious suspicions about
these "Shining Band" people, and end up going into
hiding. They also learn they are now the only known survivors of
the midsummer meeting. (The objective of the Shining Band
has been to strip Riveria of all its low-level adventurers, such
that in a few years when their plans come to full fruition
there will be less mid-level adventurers around to get in the way
- in this the Band is highly successful, but they never
realize it, and almost wait too long before acting.)
At this point, the Party also meets two individuals - Charles
and Teimperian - who would have a profound and lasting influence
on the campaign for good and bad, respectively.
Starting members (from Temple
of Gruumsh): Dibs(NtC-1), Calion(F-1/T-1), Drogmac(WrC-2),
Sharana(F-1), Nildhevin(NtC-1/I-1), Throy(F-1),
Arrabella(R-1), Pearl(MU-1)
| Fie 23 754 |
Party buys a boat and
sails from Riveria. |
| Fie 24 |
Reach island, find corpse of Drogmac's
brother Gormac on the beach; Drogmac gives full burial. |
| Fie 25 |
Find another 2 corpses from Gormac's party while exploring
inland.
Realize animals etc. on island are all undead; battle a
skeletal Ogre and lots of other undead that can operate
in daylight. (!)
|
| Fie 26 |
Battle living Bugbears outside and
more undead inside, Party thrashed, barely able to retreat. |
| Lei 1 755 |
Rested Party returns
to ruins, find Bugbears inside this time: Drogmac killed.
Party retreats to boat and leaves. |
| Lei 2 |
Arrive Riveria, report to Shining
Band and meet Sereka, a Shining Band mage who knows nothing
of Party, mission, or anything else but gives useful advice
anyway. |
| Lei 3 |
Cnutkum Stallvorrson(F-1)
and Kermut O'Flanahan(NrC-1) join due to Party recruiting. |
| Lei 6 |
Arrive back at island, battle Bugbears outside ruins.
Wade inside and downstairs, do fine against undead but
cold drives Party back; rescue some cold rats.
|
| Lei 7 |
Party finds a large spellbook, then loses it to an invisible
foe during a battle with Bugbears.
Somehow, Nildhevin gets spooked by the invisible person
and flees in terror; Party would later find her corpse at
the base of a steep bank she ran off the top of: Nildhevin
killed.
Track invisible person to Bugbear camp but cannot find;
retreat, notice previously-killed Bugbear corpses not where
they were left so start burning all they can find.
|
| Lei 8 |
Lots more undead on main floor;
Calion killed. |
| Lei 10 |
Another sortie into ruins finds 3 Ghouls; everyone paralyzed
except Cnutkum who defeats the last Ghoul and saves the
Party.
Kermut prays during this and gets divine intervention but
doesn't realize it, though all his weapons vanish.
Recovering Party hears noises nearby; investigation finds
a Ghoul and Human in combat, Party helps the Human, so Lars
Svendsen (NrC-1) joins along with Fulvin Griseo(NrC-1/T-1)
who had been hiding in the darkness; these two were the
divine intervention Kermut summoned earlier!
Party disturbs a Coldwraith; Lars and Sharana get frozen
by its touch, Lars killed when he fails to recover.
|
| Lei 11 |
Party finds a small opening, Dibs goes through and finds
a Gray Ooze the hard way: Dibs killed.
Return to boat and find a pigeon nailed to the mast.
|
| Lei 12 |
All Party's weapons go overboard
during the night; much paranoia until invisible foe finally
discovered and captured, Party then sails for Riveria with
Telvar the Mage, and a charmed Throy, bound and gagged. |
| Lei 13 |
Arrive Riveria and find Shining Band warehouse deserted;
investigation reveals it was never theirs at all, they had
rented it from the Fishers' Guild.
Kevin the Helm Cleric dispels charm on Throy.
Teimperian the Bigger Mage questions Telvar and learns
spellbook he stole is still on island.
Detective work leads Party to Llandreesa of House Merillion(MU-2/T-3),
who joins, and Thomas and Gamford,
who don't - yet; Party learns Sereka is dead and rest of
Shining Band has vanished.
|
| Lei 14 |
Teimperian disappears from Riveria.
Pandora Periwinkle(NtC-1) joins.
Party leaves Riveria; Gamford Rowbottom(A-3) and
Thomas Crathom(T-2) join by stowing away on Party's
boat, presence given away hours later by their noisy seasickness.
|
| Lei 15 |
Arrabella goes ashore and finds
a Humorn herb. |
| Lei 16 |
Party finds Teimperian and his cronies stripping everything
they can find of value off the island; cautiously watch
until they leave, realize Bugbears are all dead as a side
effect.
Return to ruins, realize Teimperian and crew missed a lower
level, and wade in.
Find a statue of Sefia; Kermut gains a Commune.
|
| Lei 17 |
Dig out a passage to a Mirror of Opposition; Gamford, Pearl,
and Thomas all vanish but rest of Party ignore and keep
right on going: meanwhile, Gamford, Pearl, and Thomas
all killed by their clones in Mirror.
Kermut finally decides to return and go in after them,
and Cnutkum follows; Cnutkum beats his own clone and helps
Kermut beat his, they gather corpses and return.
Meanwhile, rest of Party abandon those in Mirror (again!)
and start exploring; are somewhat embarrassed when C + K
return and ask where their backup was.
Much argument with a room that charms all who enter, then
retreat to camp with half of Party tied up.
|
| Lei 18 |
Spend hours gaining safe entry to charming room; find an
intelligent skeleton here chained to the wall.
Llandreesa and Pandora release it; Pandora gains and uses
a Wish, thus Dibs, Pearl, Lars, Calion, Drogmac,
and Nildhevin all resurrected but Drogmac
and Nildhevin both killed again almost immediately
as they came back to life while buried, and promptly suffocated.
(oops!)
Sharana, who had been left behind in Riveria to recover,
also appears; she had been guiding a rescue force to the
island and they were upstairs even now, probably wondering
where she'd gone.
Party goes outside and meets Kevin, Charles, and a bunch
of Clerics who proceed to clear out ruins.
|
| Lei 19 |
Drogmac raised by Charles
while rest of Party and Clerics finish cleaning out the place. |
| Lei 21 |
Arrive back at Riveria, start a
long treasury and training break. |
| Lei 28 |
Telvar convicted of a raft of crimes
and sentenced to years in prison. |
| Sco 1 |
As required by local tax laws, Party
name themselves: the Enterprise Company. |

Casualties: Thomas, Gamford; Nildhevin (twice - revived once);
(Dibs, Calion, Pearl, Lars - all revived via wish); (Drogmac twice
- revived both times)
Retirees: Fulvin(to Dwarves of Vanamore via F-Series),
Llandreesa(to Black Hand I,
eventually); Lars(to Halls of

Pearl, Cnutkum
(to Fred's Treasure
Map): Pandora, Kermut
3. Gruumsh's Revenge
(8-0-0;3), Scori 4-Tari 11 755, JN-OC 96
Background and summary: Between one thing and another, the Party
come to realize the complex they visited in "Temple
of Gruumsh" is becoming active again far too quickly.
This, coupled with the Party's desire to stay out of sight
for a while, leads them back there once more. What they find and
eventually wipe out (with much help from the local militia)
is a fast-developing Orcish temple whose spies and agents have already
infiltrated the local troops, and who are secretly being
supported by the daughter of the nearby Baron.
Starting members (from Deadman's
Island): Dibs(NtC-2), Calion(F-1/T-2), Drogmac(WrC-2),
Sharana(F-2), Throy(F-2), Arrabella(R-2), Pearl(MU-2),
Cnutkum(F-2)
| Sco 18 755 |
Dibs receives a mysterious note
for party to meet "the Green Man" in a local pub. |
| Sco 21 |
Party goes to pub, finds Green Man to be a Bard paid to
pass secret messages in his songs; through much subterfuge
Party brought to secret meeting with Teimperian.
Teimperian fills Party in on fake Shining Band people,
tells them Sereka really was from the Band, suggests
Party might want to leave Riveria for a while, and actually
tells them his own plan (!) under guise of speculating what
might be behind all this.
Teimperian offers to take Fulvin, Llandreesa and Pandora
into hiding, while Kermut stays at the Helm temple.
|
| Sco 23 |
Remaining Party leave Riveria, sail
around for days to throw off pursuit, and eventually reach
Sachem. |
| Sco 27 |
Make it to site of Temple
of Gruumsh adventure, find it much more active,
start bashing Orcs until no more health and cures are left.
Arrabella eats her Humorn herb but nothing happens, for
now.
|
| Sco 28 |
Return to Sachem, find their boat
sunk at dock. |
| Tar 2 |
While herb-hunting, Arrabella meets the Ent Tallbranch,
summoned by her Humorn herb days ago and only just now getting
here; she takes him back to Party. (and respect for her
herb-hunting grows immensely!)
Tallbranch explains how the universe, deity structure,
etc. works, and that Gruumsh is a major deity.
|
| Tar 3 |
Party and Tallbranch arrive at Orc compound, start causing
major havoc until Dibs captured; thus Dibs leaves,
as does Tallbranch, having done what he came for.
Pursuit of Dibs' captors fails; instead finds Lt. Nelson
- a local militiaman - near death in the woods after his
own men turned on him. Party takes him in.
|
| Tar 4 |
Party sets an ambush on Orc trail but get ambushed themselves
and barely escape.
Arrabella meets a Dryad, tries to matchmake with Calion
"the Stallion" but he wants none of it; Dryad
warns of lots and lots of Orcs approaching.
Party splits in two; Calion, Arrabella, and Pearl stay
in woods to monitor Orcs, rest go back to town for help.
|
| Tar 5 |
C, A + P harass a large gang of Orcs using an Ogre as a
pack animal; cause Ogre to rampage until Orcs kill it, delay
Orcs for hours.
Orcs animate the dead Ogre and continue; Calion grapnel
'ooks it and it falls apart, thus more delay.
|
| Tar 6 |
Main Party arrives at Durweston, meets Major Minor, enlists
militia help.
Back in woods, attempt to infiltrate Orc camp fails utterly.
Pearl gets thrashed while trying to lay another ambush;
Calion and Arrabella madly dash to Sachem before she dies,
delaying tactics abandoned.
|
| Tar 7 |
C, A + P back to temple; Pearl walks right into a mountainside
and out again, to no useful effect, they then try attacking
from below and get nowhere so try the outdoor approach again.
Main Party has dinner with Baron Boscombe and daughter
Sylune, make lots of plans, head back to woods.
Calion and Arrabella get themselves captured; Pearl rescues
late at night and nearly gets killed in process.
|
| Tar 8 |
Two Party groups reunite near Sachem, militia set up roadblocks.
Arrabella killed in a battle with a few Orcs, just
before Major Minor and a lot more militia show up.
|
| Tar 9 |
Large military assault on Orc holdings; Party goes in back
way and painfully captures upper level.
Orcs reply, trapping Party and remaining militia in same
armoury as during Temple
of Gruumsh; at one point every Party member either
unconscious or paralyzed except Drogmac.
Sharana dies in armoury: 3 people below 0 h.p.,
only 2 cures, and she got the short straw.
|
| Tar 10 |
A small army arrives, sweeps through
Orcish defenses, relieves those left in armoury, and keeps
right on going; eventually reach Gruumsh temple and find a
dead Hobbit: Dibs killed during temple's consecration. |
| Tar 11 |
Calion gets on a bed and unexpectedly teleports to Sylune's
bedroom in Boscombe's palace in Durweston.
Party and militia invade castle through bedroom, much fast
talking prevents an all-out battle in hallways; Boscombe
at first refuses to believe Sylune's guilt but is eventually
convinced.
|
| Tar 16 |
Party arrives at Riveria by boat (much to Teimperian's
surprise!) and meet he and Charles here.
Arrabella fails raise from Charles.
|
| Tar 19 |
Sharana raised by Charles. Pearl begins training
under Teimperian, but he's away so often it takes twice
as long as it should; unknown to her, he sets a few magical
"homing triggers" during this.
A long training break begins.
|
Surviving members: Calion(F-2/T-2), Drogmac(WrC-3), Sharana(F-3),
Throy(F-3), Pearl(MU-3), Cnutkum(F-2)
New members: none
Casualties: Dibs, Arrabella; (Sharana - raised)
Retirees: none
Continuing party (to Fred's Treasure Map):
Calion, Drogmac, Sharana, Throy, Pearl, Cnutkum
4. Fred's Treasure Map
(8-0-0;1),
Prici 16-Aqui 4 755, OC-NO 96
Background and summary: Out of the blue, Pandora gets kidnapped
from downtown Riveria, but with almost ridiculous ease
the Party is able to rescue her. A pirate's map found during
this leads to further explorations in the mountains, and
a series of small adventures find the Party in possession of a
highly magical ship when all is said and done. More significant,
perhaps, is what the Party doesn't do during all this -
see below.
Years later, Calion would bring another Party back here to
finish the original adventure (though much altered in the intervening
time); see Danger at Drowsaptre
for write-up.
Starting members (from Gruumsh's
Revenge): Calion(F-2/T-2), Drogmac(WrC-3), Sharana(F-3),
Throy(F-3), Pearl(MU-3), Cnutkum(F-2)
(from Deadman's
Island): Kermut(NrC-2), Pandora(NtC-1)
| Prici 8 755 |
Pandora disappears. Nobody notices
for days. |
| Pri 13 |
By now, ransom notes for Pandora
start to appear; Teimperian (conveniently) figures out where
she is and even scouts the terrain on Party's behalf! |
| Pri 16 |
Party enter Drowsaptre swamp, get mugged by Troglodytes,
fail to notice a person (Teimperian) watching battle from
above.
Reach ruins, scout, enter an outbuilding, find a secret
door; behind it is Pandora, so Pandora re-joins.
(and Party thus neatly avoids an entire adventure - see
below)
Decide to abandon ruins, get mugged by more Troglodytes;
a treasure map is looted from one.
|
| Pri 17 |
Party reaches Newton, sends a message
to Teimperian telling of Pandora's rescue. |
| Pri 21 |
No reply yet from Teimperian (surprise,
surprise!) so Party leaves town to see where map leads them. |
| Pri 24 |
Now high in mountains, Party finds
landmarks shown on map and has to avoid a large band of pirates
quite likely looking for the same treasure. |
| Pri 25 |
Find and explore a huge cavern complex that leads into
the back of a Dwarven town; Party realize this when breaking
into a door puts them in a Dwarven housewife's kitchen,
and retreat smartly. (Calion gets1 ExP for the break-in)
Explore a different direction; Throy almost killed by a
Lurker.
Meet Garim and Join, a couple of Dwarves; Party warns about
pirate band outside.
Realize map in fact leads into and out of Khazatza, the
Dwarven town, so press on.
Set off a cave-in trap the hard way: Drogmac killed;
everyone else at or below 0 hp, Kermut saves Party by curing
Pandora without passing out.
Find a treasure trove, including a delicate ship in a bottle
along with some vital curing potions, and sack out.
|
| Pri 26 |
Discover the grave of Fred the Fearless, odd in that he
was supposedly one of the Shining Band recruiters, and also
find a miniature ship's wheel in a secret hole. (see
below for details about this wonderful item)
Jumped by a large band of pirates on exiting the caverns;
Throy and Kermut parley while everyone else gets clobbered,
soon realize they're all on the same side and Fred is -
or was - the common foe.
Learn that the pirates are seeking the ship's wheel and
little else, and a deal is struck: pirates get the wheel
and some gold, Party gets everything else, along with some
information, and stays alive.
|
| Pri 27 |
Pirate leader gives Party a safe-passage
pennant, and pirates leave; Party re-enters Khazatza. |
| Pri 28 |
Drogmac raised by the Khazatza
Dwarves, but begins acting strangely almost right away. |
| Aqu 4 |
Arrive Imdulton, but Pandora, Calion
and Kermut keep going. |
| Aqu 6 |
Pandora etc. reach Riveria; learn of a hefty (and illegal)
bounty on heads of Calion, Sharana, Cnutkum and Drogmac,
take shelter in the Helm temple.
Teimperian brought to temple by Kevin, spends a few days
figuring out what the ship in a bottle does (he wants it
too), tells them it's a real ship waiting to be activated
but they dash his hopes by refusing to sell it to him; he
can't outright steal it from them in the Helm temple, so
he has to let it go.
|
| Aqu 13 |
Calion and Kermut arrive back at
Imdulton. Drogmac becomes far too interested in the bottled
ship but has to wait while some people train. (Cnutkum to
F-3, Pandora to NtC-2, Calion to T-3) |
| Leq 5 |
Everyone finally finished, leave
Imdulton for a sheltered bit of coast so Drogmac can try out
his boat. |
| Leq 10 |
In a quiet bay on Windward Isle, Calion opens the bottle
and an 85-foot 3-masted ship - the "Dagger of the Winds"
- appears; he then has to swim out and save it from drifting
away.
Rest of party row out and board; when Drogmac sets foot
on the deck the whole Party gets teleported to somewhere
completely different...

But what did the Party miss?
The kidnapping of Pandora had been arranged by Teimperian as a
means to lure the Party out to yet another place where they could
all get themselves killed - this time, an icy windswept swamp filled
with Lizardpeople and Troglodytes on the payroll of a local pirate
gang, who in turn are on the payroll of Teimperian. He even flies
out to their complex to oversee the job; on several occasions the
Party fail to notice him arrive or scout, so he patiently waits in
the stronghold for them. But they find Pandora without ever entering
the stronghold, and then leave, thus blowing their best chance to
establish a connection between Teimperian and the strange goings-on
of late. The Party then surprise everyone by leaving the area entirely
for quite some time; for Teimperian, this is almost as good a result
as if they were all dead, as it gives him a clear field to pursue
his plots. He would keep an eye on their progress, however, and reappear
at a most inopportune moment in Dragonspear
Castle I; other than this, he would have well over a year's
respite from the Party until - almost too late - a later incarnation
of the same Company would again start interfering with his plans in
Against the Slavers.
And what was that ship's wheel all about?
The miniature (1-foot diameter) ship's wheel discovered by the
Party was the magically-altered remains of one of the coast's
true legends: the pirate ship Mary Rose. This fearsome and
extremely fast vessel was for many years the scourge of the
coast, until it inexplicably vanished some decades ago - and the tales
of its abilities grew in the telling over the years since.
Somehow, the pirate band met by the Party had come into the knowledge
both of where to find the Mary Rose in its current incarnation
and how to turn it back into its former self. By the time
the Party got back to the coast, rumours were already flying that
the near-mythical ship had recently been seen plying the inshore
waters; these tales were all too true, and the Party would themselves
meet the Mary Rose and her swashbuckling crew more than
once during their future travels.
5. The Temple
of the Lady
(9-1-1;1), Lequi 10 755, NO-DE 96
Background and summary: The Party finds itself in a tiny demi-plane
with very strange physics, and has to find a way out. This
involves finding three Amber Keys - a sphere, pyramid, and cube
- and the whole thing is in fact a Sif-devised test to see
if the Party is capable of later carrying out the quest for the
real Amber Keys. They succeed, and get back to their own
world far north of where they left; after a lengthy journey, they
return to their ship and figure out how to sail it. On returning
to Durweston, the Party is rewarded for their actions in Gruumsh's
Revenge and given a small farm by Baron Boscombe.
Starting members (from Fred's Treasure
Map): Calion(F-2/T-3), Drogmac(WrC-3), Sharana(F-3),
Throy(F-3), Pearl(MU-3), Cnutkum(F-3),
Kermut(NrC-2), Pandora(NtC-2)
| "Day 1" |
Party appears on separated bits of rock in a tiny sea surrounded
by black space; on one larger island is a small building.
Throy falls in water and nearly gets swept into space,
but is rescued in time.
Lots of rope used to get people to the larger island in
stages; a whale attacks during final stage and swallows
Pandora whole. Pandora killed instantly, but she
gets stuck in whale's teeth; thus rest of Party use her
as a fishhook to haul the whale to shore, where they kill
it.
Reach building; on arriving an Angel appears, tells Party
this place is a test - they have to find three amber keys
- but despite much questioning gives no other useful information
before leaving.
Enter building, find themselves in a maze, get teleported
all over the place at regular intervals and thus are constantly
getting separated just as they have reunited.
Full exploration of maze finds an amber pyramid behind
an illusory wall.
Pearl finds a door and knocks on it, getting no answer
she bellows loudly at it and thus provides a beacon for
rest of Party to find her and reunite; they promptly make
camp.
|
| "Day 2" |
Behind door is a stairway to a funnel-shaped room; below
this are hallways with trap doors every so often, doesn't
take Party long to realize they're finding the same trap
doors over and over again.
Pearl nearly killed when Party lowers her into a Gelatinous
Cube in a pit below one of the trap doors.
Lots of little combats with other pit guardians but no
further serious menace.
One pit has no bottom: Kermut is lowered in here and finds
himself floating weightless in a large hollow area; using
a net he catches an amber cube, overeager Party just about
kill him hauling him out.
|
| "Day 3" |
Back to funnel room; a blaze of smoke and fireworks along
with very loud music distracts Party long enough they don't
notice a new arrival, thus Shauna Lightfingers(I-7/T-9)
joins in her trademarked manner.
Sharana very bluntly asks Shauna to turn off the pyrotechnics;
at swordpoint, she complies.
Throy finds an amber sphere in a compartment hanging from
the ceiling, Party then exits building and reenters using
the three amber keys.
Building now consists of a single room with a window looking
out onto snow and a hole in the floor leading to starlit
space.
Shauna throws her dice through the window; they land in
snow and sink. On seeing this Pearl and Drogmac step through,
turn around, and find the window gone. Pearl recovers and
keeps the dice.
Shauna jumps down hole in floor and floats off into space,
so Shauna leaves for good.
Throy levitates in to try and rescue her and also floats
away, so Throy leaves for now.
|
| Leq 10 755 |
Everyone else steps out the window,
find themselves on Riveria but no idea where or what date
it is; it is in fact still Lequi 10, and only a few Riverian
seconds have passed since they left the ship. |
| Leq 11 |
Arrive at a small fishing village and learn they're in
the Norselands, not far from Luskan.
Kermut gets robbed by a village cutpurse while trying to
find a ship heading south.
|
| Leq 12 |
Calion steals back some of what
Kermut lost, from some random villagers. |
| Leq 17 |
Arrive at Culavera after an uneventful voyage on a trading
ship.
Meet Sharana's family. Party doesn't like them, they don't
like Party, Sharana stuck in the middle.
|
| Leq 19 |
Arrive back at "Dagger of the Winds"; find Pandora's
corpse lying on the deck and Throy standing near the mainmast,
grinning like an idiot and hanging on to the ship's bell,
so Throy rejoins.
Party learns Throy has been here for 9 days; he reappeared
on ship but could not find Shauna, so he tied the ship to
shore and then searched it thoroughly. He put himself in
stasis when he rang the ship's bell – he came to only when
his hand was pried loose from it by Party.
Drogmac realizes ship has a crew at his command, but only
he can see them; they cannot speak at all and only Drogmac
can speak to them, but he knows nothing about sailing and
must translate orders from Sharana in order to get the ship
moving. Predictably, the result is something of a disaster.
|
| Leq 21 |
Ship unsteadily wobbles into Sachem;
locals wonder why there's no crew. |
| Leq 22 |
Set sail for Durweston, meet the Mary Rose en route
and are lucky not to be sunk: Party forgot to fly their
safe passage pennant.
Arrive Durweston after a much more co-ordinated sail, learn
Major Minor was court-martialled and given a dishonourable
discharge during the fall for her poor handling of the Gruumsh's
Revenge engagement.
|
| Leq 24 |
Dinner with Baron Boscombe; Party
rewarded for Gruumsh's
Revenge adventure with 1000 g.p. and a small farm
a few miles north of town, and told he has disowned Sylune,
his treacherous daughter. |
| Leq 25 |
Cnutkum retires to look after
the farm. Kermut retires to train, while everyone
else prepares for another adventure. |

6. Sigurd's Realm (a.k.a.
Amber Keys 1) (9-4-2;4), Jera 4-20
755, FE-AL 97
Background and summary: The Party hears word of Ogres causing
problems for locals in the area north of Mithra, and go
to investigate. Once here, they discover the Ogres are working
for a Giant, Sigurd by name, who is looking to expand his
territory. The Party wades into Sigurd's mountain lair and essentially
wipes it out, gaining much booty in the process including
the Amber Sphere, but when they try to use Sif's favour to get
a free ride back to town things go very wrong, and the
Party winds up in an abandoned temple at the bottom of a lake.
Desperate, they ask Sif's blessing once again, and are
taken to Her realm where - in return for various favours - She
suggests the Party find the other two Amber Keys and then
use them...somehow. She then quasi-unintentionally does the Party
a great service by placing them in Waterdeep, far south
of Riveria where they have by now been made rather unwelcome.
Starting members (from Temple of the Lady):
Calion(F-2/T-3), Drogmac(WrC-3), Sharana(F-3), Throy(F-3),
Pearl(MU-3)
| Jer 2 755 |
Arrive at Buckford, start trying
to figure out what is behind raids on nearby farms and roads. |
| Jer 4 |
Arrive Mithra, still making inquiries,
and run into Llandreesa heading for Linithe forest. |
| Jer 5 |
Party does some recruiting: Aliri the White(NrC-3),
Christophe(B-2), and Boris Broomwalker(R-2) join.
Set up an ambush at a likely raid target, a nearby farm.
|
| Jer 7 |
Ambush and kill 3 raiding Ogres;
spend all next day cleaning up the mess. |
| Jer 9 |
Boris and Calion both nearly drown
crossing a tiny river while backtracking Ogres. |
| Jer 10 |
Reach well-defended entrance to
an old mine, see lots of activity including Orcs and a few
Giants, and manage to sabotage some of the defenses. |
| Jer 11 |
Several battles during night with Orcs and Ogres; Calion
nearly killed by a ballista bolt, so Party retreats.
Sneak up valley past mine and find a cave behind a waterfall;
start exploring, get jumped by cave's resident Ice Toads,
and Drogmac barely survives. Lots of snow outside.
|
| Jer 12 |
Pearl sets off a trap and puts herself,
Sharana, and Aliri into a paralytic sleep for the day. |
| Jer 13 |
Boris falls into an ice-cold lake on leaving cavern, Party
have to spend an hour drying him out.
Try to stealthily approach mine entrance, but sentries
notice Party; a Frost Giant charges to attack but the only
damage it does is by falling onto Boris as it dies.
Sharana leads a very disorganized charge toward the mine
entrance, most of Party soon involved here but Boris is
still stuck under the Giant.
Pearl loots Giant and finds a wand; a test shot into a
cliff generates a fireball, so yelling "Get back!"
she charges at the cave mouth and lets off a badly-aimed
blast: Calion killed, Throy barely survives.
Party retreats again after digging Boris out.
|
| Jer 14 |
Return to cave and wade in almost unopposed, start exploring.
An empty picture frame on a wall turns out to be a long-range
scrying and one-way communication device after some amusing
experimentation involving Cnutkum.
Meet Sigurd the Frost Giant, half of Party tries to fight
him while other half tries to parley; Sigurd does both at
once until he learns the Party are not willing to make themselves
the replacements for all his hired help they've killed off.
Then, he just gets mad and fights.
Aliri (now NrC-3) killed by a Sigurd boulder;
Pearl killed by her own fireball, but Sigurd defeated.
|
| Jer 15 |
A group of Goblins provide surprisingly stiff opposition;
Party capture one and kill the rest, so Kookus(--)
joins despite Sharana's best attempts to kill him too.
Boris nearly killed by another band of Goblins; much exploring
follows.
A huge treasury is found, with amber sphere; guarded by
an animated statue that extends Party to its limit.
|
| Jer 16 |
As Party readies to leave, Boris kisses the feet of another
statue - of Sif? - and it starts talking to him.
Boris determines statue can teleport people, and asks for
fast transport to Riveria; statue's geography is a few thousand
years out of date but it knows there's something called
the "Temple at Ajainya" in the right direction,
so Boris asks it to take Party there.
Party and statue find themselves in total darkness and
4 feet of water; quickly realize they're in a building at
the bottom of a lake, and correctly guess this is a long-sunken
Sif temple.
Drogmac tries to pry open a window, but generates a leak;
building starts slowly filling with water.
Boris, desperate, asks statue to just take Party anywhere
it can; Party plane-shifts to Sif's realm but for some reason
Calion's corpse disappears. (it winds up with Kermut
and Cnutkum, in fact)
Meet with Sif Herself; Pearl raised and Kookus
killed by Sif, rest of Party told to find the other
2 amber keys and then plane-shifted to a road north of Waterdeep.
|
| Jer 20 |
Party arrives at Waterdeep and starts a long treasury and
training break.
Calion raised in Caradon; he and Kermut start cautiously
heading for Waterdeep.

7. Dragonspear Castle
I (a.k.a. Amber Keys 2) (9-1-1;2),
Touri 5-Jema 10 755, MA 97-AL 98
Background and summary: The Party tries and fails to find
the Amber Cube in Dragonspear Castle, gets thrashed in the process,
and is forced back to Waterdeep having - all in all - accomplished
far more harm than good in the grand scheme of things. (but see
The Chronos Stone for
how things really happened)
Starting members (from Sigurd's Realm):
Calion(F-3/T-3), Drogmac(WrC-4), Sharana(F-4), Throy(F-4),
Pearl(MU-3), Christophe(B-3), Boris(R-3)
(from Temple of
the Lady): Kermut(NrC-3)
| Ave 18 755 |
Calion and Kermut arrive at Waterdeep,
so Kermut re-joins. |
| Tou 5 |
Leave Waterdeep. |
| Tou 23 |
Attacked by bandits; Party makes a complete mess of a simple
combat, Calion killed among much blundering from
all concerned, and Pearl's wand of fireballs runs out of
gas but not before starting a forest fire.
Calion raised, 8 rounds later, by an Elixir of Life
potion.
Party and local villagers spend rest of day putting out
fire.
|
| Tou 24 |
Much investigation, trying to find
one bandit that got away. |
| Tou 26 |
During night, Party's possessions
ransacked by a local Thief (but nothing taken) and a threatening
note left behind to discourage further investigation. Party
gives up and leaves. |
| Jem 5 |
Arrive at castle, start exploring outbuildings and clobbering
occupants; Calion now realizes he is slowed by something
he looted off the bandits.
Enter main castle; interior walls are invisible to begin
with, causing much confusion.
Pearl sent in on end of a rope to map but gets captured,
Party too slow to react but send everyone in.
Boris twice meets an armoured skeleton; on second meeting
he leads it back to Party and they attack, and in a huge
upset defeat a full Skeleton Warrior without losing anyone!
A golden skull is looted off this skeleton, this would prove
highly significant later.
Find a robot persistently trying to walk through a wall.
Boris finds a miniature staircase, steps on, and shrinks
to scale; everyone else follows.
Staircase leads to a wizard's den-prison; Pearl is here,
in process of being fused to a robot, but Party is able
to trick wizard into letting her go.
Throy disbelieves wizard, sees something worse instead,
and flees screaming. Rest of Party follow after carving
up the robot, though Pearl gets shrunk to 1/3" tall,
and retreat to outbuilding.
|
| Jem 8 |
Everyone back to normal size and recuperated, resume exploring;
another tiny staircase shrinks Party again.
A giant ant attacks; Drogmac killed.
Pearl uses golden skull to try and raise Drogmac but only
manages to animate his corpse.
Meet Fintera, another wizard who lives here; he imprisoned
the one met earlier (actually a variant Lich, as Throy saw)
and at one time trained Teimperian. Parley, then retreat
to outbuilding again.
Pearl uses golden skull again here, animating Drogmac in
the outbuilding and an army of thousands outside it! But
they cannot understand her commands, and grow increasingly
hostile.
Calion tries to steal skull from Pearl; Drogmac-as-zombie
attacks Calion and all undead outside try to get in to help.
During brawl that follows, Calion briefly grabs skull but
then loses his grip, to his utter shock it goes sailing
into the waiting hands of Teimperian, who at last reveals
his true colours to Party by teleporting in and stealing
the skull.
The undead army, now under Teimperian's command (as Party
correctly guessed), forms up and marches off; Drogmac tries
to join them but is restrained. The army then returns and
collapses in courtyard.
A Thief announces her presence by trying to break into
Party's outbuilding, thus Leshendra Shadowstalker(T-3)
joins; she is here due to a Fintera mistake.
|
| Jem 9 |
Pearl does not awaken until noon; when she does, she is
a level higher (to MU-5) and very evil.
Later that afternoon, an Ogre crashes through door just
as Pearl strikes by putting half of Party to sleep; a messy
brawl breaks out:
o Leshendra's first
action is to fumble into Sharana; Sharana, already suspicious
of this new Thief, takes this as an attack, and they fight
each other;
o Pearl continues dropping
spells into Party while the Ogre causes mayhem;
o Once Ogre dies, Throy
turns his big sword crosswise and tries to crosscheck the
whole room into the basement below; he does, but not before
Calion cuts Pearl's arm off and Sharana almost kills Leshendra;
o Pearl then subdued
(and almost killed), and everyone cools off.Frantic contact
with Fintera; he agrees to try an experimental teleport
spell to get Party to safety, and very illegally plants
them in Waterdeep's Helm temple - where they are all promptly
arrested.
|
| Jem 10 |
Two important Clerics - Aurora Roaringhorn and Belmonder
- assigned to Party to sort out their mess.
Curse removed on Pearl but she loses the level that came
with it, so back to MU-4.
Drogmac fails raise.
Everyone fined 50 g.p. each for illegal entry into temple
and must be escorted at all times while in town.
|
| Jem 11 |
Pearl gets her arm regenerated.
Leshendra goes into town and bolts from escort, so Leshendra
retires; spends the next year or so as a reasonably
successful Thief in Waterdeep until rejoins campaign in
Evils of Tymore Island.
