V.1: Tomb of the Lizard King (154 Tuilë 40 - Lairë 10; 1985 January - June)

Background and summary: By dribs and drabs, a vast Party accumulates in Astarah. They learn of some problems in one region, namely that there have been a lot of unexplained disappearances of commonfolk. They figure out that source of problem must lie deep in a particular swamp, and so the Party heads into it and finds a vast tomb complex underground. Eventually they kill all living occupants, and find Sakatha and his brides: all Vampire lizardpeople. Years ago, Sakatha had used a Ring of Wishes to make himself a 9th level Mage, and is building an army with which to ravage the countryside. With much difficulty, the Party kills all the Vampires. They also rescue a large number of prisoners.

2. Bree, Tse, Baranfindel, Shauna (to The Gauntlet);

4. Lanefan, Helga (eventually to Hobgoblin City and Northcoast Liberation)

Where did Lanefan and Helga go?
154L43: Lanefan and Helga arrive in Ikon; they are apprehended by Valashi (whom Tse had already contacted) on the charge of theft of 14,000sp. They quickly point out that the 14,000sp they “stole” is in fact for Valashi; they knew that Kaali owed her that amount, and felt that they would pay off his debt quickly, rather than have the Party take their time about it. Valashi finds this acceptable, in fact rather humourous, and lets them go.
they then fly north, by means of the Boots of Levitation and prevailing winds
L59: Lanefan and Helga arrive in Noranglia
Y14: Lanefan and Helga meet Gandalf who, last seen had taken Lanefan to court (see Frost Keys E ending), but had since been adventuring with Hobson in Noranglia; Lanefan and Gandalf act like they’re the best of friends; Lanefan ditches Helga and sets off with Gandalf and Hobson and 4000sp to find an informant named “L”, who has information to sell concerning the worrisome increase in Hobgoblin activity in and around Noranglia
Y18: Lanefan steals the 4000sp from Gandalf and meets “L” alone, who turns out to be a Hobgoblin commander named Ell Kara, plus a few minor associates; after buying some useful information, Lanefan steals Ell’s gleaming 2-handed sword; when he withstands the sword’s bite (it hates Chaotics), a Glyph, and a Flamestrike, Ell puts a Quest on Lanefan to return the sword
the rest of the “party” see and hear the spells from a distance, figure that the deal has fallen through, and go their merry way
Y20: Lanefan, unaware of the Quest, collects his reward for Ell’s information and also one for the sword
Y22: after 2 days of growing bad luck, illness, and growing agony, Lanefan begins to realise he has a problem; finds out that he has been cursed, and deduces that the sword is the cause
Y26: somehow gets the sword back; sword psionically tells him he must return it to Ell; Lanefan hires many clerics to cast many spells (at great expense), but he cannot break the Quest nor stop the agony
Y38: with Helga, he finds Ell and returns the sword; Ell then tells him that if Tse asks about a long lost Hobgoblin city, they should come find her; unfortunately, Lanefan never meets Tse; Gandalf, on the other hand, has by this point already met Tse in the Gauntlet adventure; but he doesn’t know that Ell is of any importance; and so the Great War commences . . .

Why is Ell Kara selling information on her own people? Because she fears that the Hobgoblin’s quest for glory is premature and doomed to failure, particularly as some of the allies they’ve acquired are extremely treacherous (namely, the Drow). If some heroic (and expendable) people can strike at the Hobgoblins right away, it might prevent an unnecessary and costly major defeat. It would also, incidentally, prevent thousands of deaths on both sides. But Lanefan and Gandalf blow that opportunity.

Y41-155T20: Lanefan and Helga carry on adventuring on their own in the Norselands, often dealing with Signy and her various “pets” (such as Swiness and Terriann); during this period, Helga trains to T6, T7 and F3, dies, and is raised, and Lanefan trains to F7
T51: taking a break from adventure, Lanefan and Helga plan a holiday and a wedding; however, Arlan steals the Sword of Healing and replaces it with another, similar-looking magic sword; Lanefan soon notices the change, and Signy tells him that the new sword belongs to Gandalf (which is true; Arlan had recently stolen it from him, in the Lost Caverns adventure)
L14: Lanefan (with assistance from Swiness) finds and confronts Gandalf about the sword swap; Gandalf successfully avoids him, and some local Dwarves break up the encounter; Lanefan flees back to Signy (via some magic bracelets); Gandalf, on the other hand, is prompted to find out about his missing magic sword; both deduce that Arlan was the thief; but Arlan, in the meantime, has taken the Sword of Healing to a powerful Smith up north and had its hilt modified such that it looks much cheaper . . .
Arlan, Lanefan, and the Healing Sword meet again in Northcoast Liberation . . .

V.2: World Journey (154 Lairë 23 - 156 Coirë 52; 1985 July - 1988 Winter)

Background and summary: Freddy, having decided to quit the high risk world of dungeon adventurers, and also avoid Valashi, decides to sail west and see what’s there. As it turns out, he keeps going, sailing all the way around Dafan, and returns to Ikon and begins to write a book of his journey: Around the World in 1000 days.
As he journeys, Freddy buys maps of every known region; thus he is able to create the first crude map of the world. To make money, he recites stories of his travels, sells copies of maps already accumulated, hires himself out as a vintner and chef. When desperate, he resorts to more creative methods such as “selling” parcels of far-off land, selling advance copies of his book, solicits donations towards his noble cause, and – of course – robbery. The latter is aided by his psionic ability of Hypnotism. Freddy also leaves a trail of his personal symbol along his journey.

Starting members, From Lizard Tomb: Freddy (T4)

Y25: arrive at coast off desert coast north of Indu; ship is attacked by 2 warships and sunk; Freddy and other survivors are captured and enslaved
brought to an encampment filled mainly with golden warriors; all attempts to escape fail; each time foiled by strange, mysterious cowled beings who all seem to be genius psionic mages (see Dead City of Hilla and Temple of Assai adventures for more details on these nasties)
Y28: a battle breaks out between the encampment and some human nomads; Freddy alone is able to escape in the confusion, and reach a nomad encampment
Y37: leave for Indu via a slow but secure caravan
Q55: arrive in Indu
H20: arrive in Lahore; Sappho (Human, T3) joins, as does Peregrin Gibb (Hobbit, T3) briefly

V.3: Ikon Resistance (154 Hrivë 47 - Coirë 19; 1986 July - December)

Background and summary: Those who hadn’t left Astarah immediately on their own agendae return to Ikon peninsula; but find it has fallen to Vridistan. Restenford is still free, however, as the Pelasgian and Hestian navies rules the sea. Using Restenford as a base, the Party makes raids on Ikon.

Starting members: from Lizard Tomb: Kaija (MU6/F7), Martin (R7), Haldir (F5/MU4/T6), Paxper (NrC5/MU4), Noynek (R5), Kiivo (R4)

H42: on the way back from Astarah to Greenhaven, Party stops off at Highport and blends in well, as have been posing as pirates for months; find the city well-armed, as the Dwarves did take over the nearby former slavers base (see Slavers Stockade)
H44: Party arrives at Greenhaven; report all they saw at Highport, and rest for a few days
H46: sailing for Ikon, the Party’s boat is rammed and boarded by Pirates (revenge for last attack on Astaran pirates); Haldir boards and steals documents, Kaija fireballs pirates’ ship; Party’s ship limps on
H47: arrive in Restenford, and find out Ikon sacked by Vridistan the day before (Ivar the Great led the defence, but was Gated away by 3 Demons)
H48: sail over for a night landing, between Ikon and Southtor (which is ablaze); sneak into Ikon
H49: Party splits up to find who is alive, who is fighting back, and help create the Free Ikon League (EIB)
Paxper and an MU get 200 prisoners to rise up and break free; 150 killed, but 23 escape
Haldir sneaks up acropolis, chased by Mages, jumps off, survives landing with Feather Fall
Martin visits a friend at Isis temple, to stir up trouble
H50: becomes obvious to Vridi invaders that some specialised resistance mounting; prepares a trap
find the Mages Guild has been abandoned, and Valashi missing
Human Vridi troops mostly replaced by Orcs for the garrison; less likely to sympathise with locals, but makes for easier targets to provoke infighting amongst (which Party tries to do)
H54: Party exits Ikon by foot; almost caught
H57: join an encampment of 70 guerillas at a villa; only limited success fighting against Vridi troops, though
H59: leave with guerillas on a raid ... become suspicious ... Kaija charms a guerilla and finds out they are all fake, set up to catch real resistors like the Party; have infiltrators in Ikon
Party heads back to Ikon to warn locals; caught by a patrol with Displacer beasts and special magical bows; Kaija shot and magically imprisoned in a dodecahedron gem; Kaija incapacitated; patrol destroyed, leader captured, and Martin finds the Kaija gem
H60: return to villa and spy on it; determine it has been abandoned by the fake guerillas
C1: sneak into Ikon
C3: arrive back in Restenford, to find Pelltar the high level Mage; but he is gone for many days
C5-C13: while waiting for Pelltar, decide to beat up some Orcs on east side of island; despite being an easy adventure, Kiivo killed and Martin almost killed
C15: Kiivo raised
C22: meet with Pelltar, who cannot revive Kaija; Paxper and Haldir both train to M5
C33: having finished training, Haldir leaves Ikon and go to Norselands (boats through Hestia [which was nominally allied with Ikon], hitches a ride with Vikings returning north, arrives T41)

Note: Kaija is revived from her gem status by Valashi about 1/2 a year later (Yavië 155), then settles down with Ikon Elves, and quickly becomes their queen and trains to MU7; then she is recruited by Bree to go to Hel.

Surviving members: Martin (R7), Haldir (F5/MU5/T6), Paxper (MU5/NrC5), Noynek (R5), Kiivo (R4)
New members: none
Retirees: none
Casualties: Kaija (revived later, then Road to Hel); (Kiivo - raised)
Continuing parties:
1. Paxper, Noynek, Kiivo (to Ullision 2);
2. Martin (to Kumbu’s Caves);
3. Haldir (to Hobgoblin City)

So where did Valashi go?

Valashi was in Ikon when Vridi troops invaded, as were Bruno (her head bodyguard), Elendil (now M3/T4), and Eldor (who had finished MU4 training just days before). They fled into the countryside, and were able to find a boat to take them to Mixos Island; however, Elendil killed (and body lost) before they made it to the boat. Valashi coordinated several groups of adventurers who made commando raids on Vridi garrisons. As well, many refugees from Konashire began arriving, including Donnamira, the Hobbit high priestess to Mimosa (C23) and mentor to Femira. A notable raid (on which Eldor went) was of Valashi’s guildhouse in Ikon on 155T47; they recovered much of the valuable material Valashi was forced to abandon when she fled, and they killed several powerful Vridi mages who had moved in.
On L17, Valashi is joined by Tse (and her newborn twins), Gandalf, Femira, and Shauna. This leads to the adventure Kumbu’s Caves.

V.4: Ullision 2 (154 Coirë 29; 1987 January - February)

Background and summary: The Party’s success in interfering with the occupation of Ikon city draws unfortunate attention upon itself. A being name Sellesi, captured and working for Vridistan, has the task of “removing” infiltrators from Ikon peninsula (see next adventure). He uses an Alter Reality device to capture the Party, and make them think they’re adventuring far away (the same illusion used on Tse, Bree and others years before – see Ullision). The Party fares horribly in the illusion: 2 members die and 22 levels are drained by undead.

V.5: Rescue of Haril (-36 Tuilë 3 - 8; 1987 April - June)

Background and summary: The Party finds themself on their boat, a day from Ikon; having spent the last few hours in an illusion that felt like it lasted over a month. The boat has one new occupant, a bizzare alien creature named Sellesi, a Puppeteer: two one-eyed heads, a horse-like body, two front legs, and one powerful hind leg. Sellesi is a space traveller, from another world. His ship arrived on Dafan in 141, but suffered a drastic temporal accident on account of the space-time manipulation of the two artificial satellites of Dafan (see Ragnarok). His crew was scattered in time, and thus has been stranded. He found some friendly Gnomes, moved in, and improved his Illusionist skills. He also eventually determined what had happened to his ship and crew, and when some of them went. He then acquired a flawed Alter Reality device with temporal side-effects, with which he hoped to find his crew.

Unfortunately, in 155 Sellesi was captured by some Vridi mages, who forced him by means of a Geas spell to use his nifty device to guard Ikon peninsula against annoying infiltrators. Fortunately for Sellesi, the Geas was worded simply to “remove” infiltrators, and his captors did not understand the flexibility of the temporal device. The first chance he gets to use the device out of sight of the Vridi mages is on the Party, and he sends them and himself 191 years into the past.

This time travel serves 3 purposes for Sellesi. He doesn’t like the Vridi, and has no desire to harm the Party. Having “removed” the Party, he has technically fulfilled the Geas and it thus ends; but he doesn’t wish to stay and explain this technicality to his captors. Most importantly, it puts him in the same time frame as Haril, one of his crew.

Thus the Party finds themselves together with Sellesi on their boat, in the year -36 (Ikon dating). He explains to the Party what has happened, when they are, and asks for their help in finding Haril. In return, Sellesi promises that once their mission is completed, he will try his best to return them to close to their time (a short period into their future, to be precise, to make sure that the Geas does not revive itself). The Party agrees to help.

The missing crew member turns out to be another alien, this time a Hani (5' tall cat-like biped). Unfortunately, his unusual nature has made him a prime target for exotic slavers; and he is a prisoner in Lahore. The party boats there and rescues him.

Starting members, from Ullision 2: Tylara (F2), Paxper (MU3/NrC4), Kiivo (R1), Tybalt (NrC1), Fergus (I1)
New member: Sellesi (Puppeteer, I12)

-37C45: The illusion ends, Party finds themselves in their boat with Sellesi the Puppeteer and the corpses of Sumakan and Noynek; sail for Lahore
-36T3: arrive at Lahorek; Sellesi uses illusions to camouflage himself in the city
T4: in a brothel, Sellesi shows Tybalt, Paxper, and Tylara a more exotic use of illusionary men
T5: meet a friendly local; Mercutio Taharinenhalensa (R1) joins; Mercutio’s background as a tax collector comes in handy when the Party noses around various businesses, looking for clues as to Haril’s whereabouts
Fergus infiltrates a Thieves Guild (with the help of Sellesi’s illusions), in order to find info
T6: find a secret tunnel from a fishmonger’s shop (a front for the Thieves) which takes them to the slaver’s estate
find and rescue Haril; Haril (F2) joins

T8: have Wish spell cast; works, except Noynek is not revived (her spirit is protected where it is); Sumakan revived

Surviving members: Tylara (F5), Paxper (MU5/NrC5), Kiivo (R4), Sumakan (F3/T4), Tybalt (NrC1), Fergus (I1); Sellesi (I12), Mercutio (R1), Haril (F2)

V.6: Orb of Phaedra (-36 Lairë 7 - 34 ... 155 Quellë 1; 1987 July - September)

Background and summary: The Party is still 191 years in the past, and looking for something meaningful to do before they return to their normal time period. They decide to see what can be done to prevent Archidamos, the future Green Emperor of Vridistan, from becoming so powerful. They determine that he is already alive (age 26), and until recently was a Lawful Good cleric! He is in the process, however, of becoming a host for an evil parasitic demon named Azakk (whose history goes back over 4000 years). The Party decides to try to interrupt that transition, by means of an artifact known as the Orb of Phaedra, which long ago was used to defeat Azakk. They piece together the history of the Orb since then, and conclude that it lies in a castle near Barradine, the city where Ivar the Great died and was recently resurrected; in fact, Ivar was at one time an owner of the Orb, and it was in his possession when he died.
Currently, Vridistan and Astarah are jointly ruled by Empress Semiramis, a Good cleric to Tiamat, a distant cousin of Archidamos. Semiramis is also the grand grand grand daughter of Coronu (who disappeared 167 years ago). Vridistan is therefore a relatively nice place to be. Ikon is but a village; while Highport is the main city of what will later be referred to as Ikon peninsula. Elsewhere, Astarah is little different than when the Party was there last, but Hestia is a minor state of no consequence, having been sacked 4 years ago by marauding Celt warbands.

Starting members, from Rescue of Haril: Tylara (F5), Paxper (MU5/NrC5), Kiivo (R4), Sumakan (F3/T4), Tybalt (NrC1), Fergus (I1), Sellesi (Puppeteer, I12), Mercutio (R1), Haril (F2)

T11: talk to sages in Lahore, and have a Commune spell thrown, to determine the following about Archidamos, the future Green Emperor of Vridistan:
• he is mostly Hobgoblin (only 3/8 Human), and C5 (to Druaga) / MU6 / A4
• his MU12 great aunt, Atargani, is an incarnation of Azakk, a great Demon
• Azakk is in the process of leaving Atargani and entering Archidamos
• Azakk is somehow responsible for the failure to bring Noynek back to life
• Azakk appears in Astaran records 4300 years ago
• the Orb of Phaedra is something that may help against Azakk; and clues to its whereabouts may be found at the ruined city of Barradine (where Ivar, the great Norse warrior, died - see Return of Ivar)
meanwhile, Sellesi is finding out from mages how to reverse the time effects of his device
T20: finally ready to leave, the Party sails for Vridistan with much merchant cargo for resale
T33: have difficulties with Orcs when sailing by Drowsaptuu
T56: arrive in Targnol Port; spend a week selling goods (make a profit of 1500sp)
L4: Sellesi and Haril leave, staying in city while Party sails on
L5: arrive at Barradine; driven out by Ghouls, and do not find the Orb
L6: return to Targnol Port; Sellesi and Haril have determined that something resembling the Orb was last seen just 12 years ago, in the possession of Queen Kassandra (who died last year); and a general close to her may have taken it to his castle near Barradine; the Party sails back
L7: arrive again in Barradine, hide their boat, and walk to the abandoned castle
battle monsters that have moved in
L8: Fergus killed; find an explorer trapped in a pit: Ellen Ferran (MU1/A1) joins
L9: Kiivo killed, dragged off, and devoured by Displacer Beasts
L11: Sumakan and Ellen killed; Ellen's familiar also killed
L12: find remains of Kiivo
L16: find the Orb of Phaedra; leave castle
L18: arrive at Targnol Port; treated as heroes for recovering the Orb
L19: Ellen raised, Kiivo and Noynek resurrected, all for cheap; Noynek also has her lost levels restored; Sumakan fails to be raised; Sellesi and Haril rejoin; Ellen retires, having been reduced to 1 Hit Point (maximum) due to the death of her familiar.

Training, L20-L33: Tylara = F6, Tybalt = C2, Mercutio = R2

L34: set sail for who knows where, guided by the Orb; end up on a strange, outlandish coast; boat to shore; walk up a giant-sized staircase (14" steps); enter a decrepit tower, find many Demon corpses strewn about; kill one dying Demon; meet a very weak Azakk, and the Orb captures him; sail off again
Sellesi activates his Alter Reality device and sends Party back to their original time frame
155Q1: Party sails for Ikon peninsula, and sneaks to the Elves

Surviving members: Tylara (F6), Paxper (MU5/NrC5), Noynek (R5), Kiivo (R4), Tybalt (NrC2), Sellesi (I12), Mercutio (R2), Haril (F2); Ellen (MU1/A1)
