21. Sphondalai Wanderings (5-1-0;0), Tuila 36-Laire 35 1084, February-November 2010

Background and summary: Lesilkasig and Astacoe find themselves adrift as strangers in a strange land. Seeking to make the best of their situation, they eventually start a Party and head up into the Sphondalai mountains looking for trouble.

Hriva 24 1084 Lesilkasig and Astacoe leave Slave Trail Party in Spieadeia: Lesilkasig needs to rebuild his spellbook, and Astacoe needs some answers.
Tuila 3 Finally manage to get an audience with a MU guild. Lesilkasig spends a few days on her book while Astacoe gets no useful answers and is told to try Praetos instead.
T 6 Leave Spieadeia on horse.
T 30 Arrive Praetos.
T 33 By now several MU-guild doors have been slammed in their faces, so Astacoe tries the Fighters' guild: he learns the MUs have closed up shop to all except locals and those well known to them - which L and A are not.
T 34 To Zeus temple; Astacoe learns enough here to realize he's completely stuck. He and Lesilkasig decide on the spur of the moment to form a Party and go adventuring; they need a Cleric, so Raphosa(NrC-3) rejoins.
T 36 They also need a Thief: recruiting produces Eliayess Palantiria(T-3), who joins.
T 37 Knowing there's trouble in the mountains but with no real idea what they're doing, Party leave town and head south.
Laire 7 Now deep in rainy Sphondalai mountains, Party take out a Grashi bandit group followed by a wandering Turvitian.
L 8

A suit of armour comes riding down the road, inside it is Anaxamandros(Cvr-3) who joins. (see Slave Trail B for how he came to be here)

A Troll attacks and doesn't last long.

Party continue wandering around mountains and occasionally bashing monsters for 10 days or so.

L 21 By sheer luck, Party stumble onto a long-lost Zeus relic. Raphosa recognizes it for what it is. Party head south.
L 27 Arrive at Cyrax, are given armed escort to Spieadeia.
L 35

Arrive Spieadeia, turn relic over to Zeus types and get a massive reward.

Anaxamandros and Raphosa retire to try and determine how relic got from Spieadeia to mountains. Lesilkasig and co. recruit a new party and head back to mountains after waiting for Astacoe to train.

32. Sphondalai Borderpost (11-8-6;5), Yavia 15-Quelle 15 1084, December 2010-January 2011

Background and summary: Having already found one Zeus relic in the Sphondalai mountains, Lesilkasig and a now-much-larger company go back to see if they can find any more. Instead they find a small tower holding a broken seal to a Titan's prison, an inter-planar gate, and more trouble than they can handle; so - overwhelmed by what they have found themselves in - they eventually back away and let the Zeus types take care of it.

The break that follows this adventure is somewhat longer and more eventful than usual.

Yavia 5 1084 Leave Spieadeia heading north.
Y 15 Disorganized Grashi ambush serves only to tell Party they've found a turnoff they sought.
Y 16 An odd creature crosses trail, Party attack; it jumps on Astacoe and nearly smothers him before Party can kill it.
Y 17

Find a bunch of Grashi outside a cave, they soon die.

One Grash surrenders, Puck and Cynoc go into cave with him to talk the rest out, but two won't co-operate and attack instead. Puck killed and Cynoc to -9 before rest of Party can bail them out.

Europa (Cleric to Rillifane) casts Death Prayer on Puck (Cleric to Ki-piddli). Party then stay put in caves to rest.

Y 20

Rest interrupted by a significant earthquake in early a.m., aftershocks continue through day as Party find a Grash-held building and spend afternoon observing.

Well after dark, Party sneak up to building, then barge in - Grash put up some resistance, Party chop down quite a few until a scream comes from elsewhere in building and remaining Grash flee outside.

Party explore until a tentacle comes down a hallway and tries to grab someone; they follow tentacle downstairs and find a Shoggoth crawling up through the floor. Battle ensues. Cynoc killed. At one point every Party member is below 0 h.p. at the same time; herbs and potions save the day, and Shoggoth very messily slain.

Grash return and kidnap Eliayess during battle but flee once Party return upstairs.

Room where Shoggoth came from proves interesting - obviously sealed for eons, it holds some loot and a broken ceramic tile in a smaller structure within room. Party scoop everything, then rest.

Y 21 Decide to head north for town; broken tile might have something to do with Zeus.
Y 27 Arrive Sharphi, report to Zeus temple. Zeus types nearly panic when presented with tile; it is one of several seals holding a Titan captive in mountains and really isn't supposed to be in shattered pieces…
Y 28

Anstrus, head of temple at nearby Praetos, arrives and takes charge. Among other things he attempts to raise Cynoc but Cynoc fails raise due to malicious interference from Hera; this warns Anstrus that Hera could be involved in Titan matters also, and Lesilkasig (oddly enough) also gets a hint of Her interest in proceedings.

Party decide to do a snap treasury division before heading back to mountains on instructions from Zeus types.

Y 31 Ymet're leaves for Xania to train. Everyone else leaves for mountains.
Y 37 Ymet're arrives Xania.
Y 38 Party arrive in mountains, still lots of little earthquakes.
Y 39

Meet a few Grash, they've been watching building and have seen some really ugly critters leave; Party chase one.

Find a huge bizarre otherworldly creature and painfully kill it.

Return to Grash, they see Party are severely weakened so they attack; Party barely survive.

Y 40 Various people need lots of rest so head for foothills where it's (supposedly) safe.
Quelle 1 Reach a small village, stay here for days.
Q 3 Pick up a recruit: Questia(R-3) joins.
Q 6 Leave for mountains, except Proteus retires and stays behind.
Q 7

Reach caves found on Y 17, another small adventuring group now holds these. Keep going.

Something invisible attacks and remains unseen, Party clobber it anyway; on death it turns to visible gray goo.

Q 8

Reach tower again, a huge semi-insect is sunning itself against one wall. Party annoy it until it charges; it almost kills Europa before dying. On dissection, its "bones" are made of a wood-like substance and its spine is a metal bar or rod; Astacoe keeps some of its carapace for making shields.

Not long after this a huge earthquake rocks the mountains, the first such since Party was last here.

Q 9

A swarm of small-dog-size oozy creatures pour out of tower and soon converge on Party (who seem to be the only animate creatures around here). Lesilkasig killed and rest of Party stretched to limit.

Astacoe leaves for town with Lesilkasig's corpse, so Party are down to three.

A couple of people arrive later looking for Party; they have come from the cave group to help on Astacoe's request: Monica(NrC-5) and Diote(F-3) join. Party stay put and keep watch on tower for a few days.

Q 10 Ymet're leaves Xania.
Q 11 A gray 6-armed creature comes out of tower and starts chucking painful spells at Party; overmatched, they flee back to caves and regroup there. Here they meet Phieata, a studious wizard; and Sodwick the Professional Henchman.
Q 13

Back toward tower, find a recently-killed corpse on trail with gear scattered nearby. Several more corpses including a Grash and a Quitch are in clearing by tower.

Sneak (noisily) around to back door of tower; a person on tower roof points something at Party, Questia yells back, and the 6-armed creature comes out the door:
o Eliayess climbs tower, finds 2 Zeus Clerics, starts to climb back down;
o Diote, Questia and Monica charge but Questia soon flees screaming into forest;
o One of the Clerics comes down to help, the other drops a weapon on creature and hurts it badly;
o Creature lets off a fireball, it is unaffected but Eliayess and Europa killed along with secondary Zeus Cleric;
o Monica picks up weapon dropped from roof and eventually slays creature just as Questia returns.

Remaining Zeus Cleric, who seems temporarily pumped up by something, gets nearly-dead Diote functional then tries to raise his companion (doesn't work), Eliayess (doesn't work) and Europa - works but Europa fails raise.

Retreat to tower roof.

Q 14

A delegation goes to caves and convinces Phieata to bring Sodwick and horses to tower.

Other Zeus types arrive, realize things here have got out of hand, and take over. Party given a letter instructing Sharphi Zeus temple to help in any way possible and admitting responsibility for the deaths.

Q 15 Questia, Diote and Sodwick leave, taking corpses and horses north. Monica stays at tower with Zeus Clerics.
   
Adventure ends, but much happens afterwards:
   
Q 16 Ymet're arrives at Sharphi, checks in at Zeus temple, and is informed her Party has likely perished. She starts recruiting a new one but (perhaps fortunately, as it turns out) gets nowhere.
Q 17 Astacoe arrives at Sharphi. Lesilkasig raised by Anstrus (who is here by sheer luck). Astacoe leaves Lesilkasig in care of Ymet're and immediately turns around for mountains.
Q 18 Anstrus himself heads into field, things in mountains are that bad.
Q 20 Astacoe meets Questia etc. on road, turns around again and returns to Sharphi with them.
Q 22

Everyone reunites at Sharphi. Eliayess raised. Zeus Cleric slain at tower also raised.

Meanwhile, a significant battle in mountains kills Phieata and almost kills Anstrus.

Q 24

Europa resurrected by Anstrus, now returned from mountains and still in rough shape; but Hera interferes and claims Europa's soul as Hers when next she dies.

Eliayess needs training but Elves are unwelcome here; she solves this by allowing a potential trainer to seduce her in partial payment for training.

Party by now are starting to realize they're quite rich due to loot from tower, so they go shopping...

Q 26 Anstrus informs Europa of Jana's existence and that she might be able to do something about Hera's mark.
Q 27 Questia and Lesilkasig jointly buy a (modified) Deck of Many Things, then impatiently wait for Eliayess to train.
Q 35 Various people draw lots of cards from deck while Astacoe and Diote hide somewhere nearby:
o Lesilkasig gains 3 levels from his own card then almost immediately loses one to someone else's (so now MU-5);
o Lesilkasig's dagger and Ymet're's boots both become intelligent and start talking to their owners;
o a huge hideous Demon shows up to steal Lesilkasig but instead becomes his friend, and soon leaves;
o Ymet're and Eliayess each pull a card that makes them sick, both are bedridden within hours;
o Ymet're is quested to eliminate the Cult of the Jackal, whatever that is;
o Eliayess becomes lycanthropic, loses a point of both Dex. and Charisma, and her skin becomes hard - and she's sick as a dog. In other words, her luck is awful;
o Questia gains a castle, puts it on the coast just east of Spieadeia;
o a different hideous Demon shows up to steal Questia just as a Genie shows up intending to marry her, they disappear for a while to fight until Genie wins by wishing up a clone of Questia and giving it to Demon; Genie and Questia then return and start planning wedding.
Q 37 Anstrus declines invitation to officiate wedding but suggests he knows someone suitable. Lesilkasig starts a long stretch of training, he has two levels to catch up.
Q 39 Questia and Genie introduced to Kallios; he and Genie get along famously, and Kallios agrees to officiate.
Q 40

Investigation by Diote reveals who and what Kallios is. Questia and Genie don't care. By now Ymet're's quest has kicked in and she is suffering badly, she and Eliayess are also still sick.

Genie removes fear-causing curse on Kallios put there by Nakki-Nakk some years ago.

Coira 1

Questia marries Zeirijat the Genie. Genie immediately wants to leave on an extended honeymoon probably not on this world, Questia objects, and their first minor argument follows. Wedding costs Questia over 10,000 g.p.

Zeirijat gives Questia a wedding gift: the level she took from Lesilkasig during card-drawing. So Questia to R-4.

C 2

Zeirijat and Questia leave on their honeymoon; for all practical purposes, Questia retires at this point.

Out of the blue, Lesilkasig gets arrested and thrown in jail. Inquiries reveal all sorts of rumours that a Snooka is about to take over the Empire; as Lesilkasig is the only Snooka anyone can find, he has become the focal point without realizing it. Zeus types start investigating.

C 4 Zeus types get some answers, Lesilkasig kept in jail for his own safety as factions in Praetos want to kill him.
C 5 Europa takes Ymet're out of town, finds a nice grove of trees, and tries some sacrifices to cure her sickness; no go. She decides to try again at new Fieros, Coira 21.
C 7 Eliayess' lycanthropy kicks in; she becomes a bear but is too sick to get up and do anything with it, so she just lies there and roars.
C 8 Astacoe gives Eliayess a potion he hopes will fix her lycanthropy.
C 14

Lesilkasig finally finishes all his training.

Zeirijat and Questia return to Praetos; he closets himself with Kallios so Questia wanders down to Sharphi, spends the next few weeks training.

C 21 Europa and Astacoe wheel Ymet're and Eliayess out to woods in barrows, Europa tries the sacrifice idea again and it works - sort of. Both Eliayess and Ymet're lose their illness, but Eliayess ends up marked to Hera (She was interfering all over the place) and Europa isn't at all sure where the sacrifices ended up. Eliayess retires.
C 22

Party leave to start Ymet're's quest; Zeus types smuggle Lesilkasig out of town, he rejoins.

33. Who Let the Dogs Out (10-3-2;4), Coira 33-Eolna 36 1084, February-May 2011

Background and summary: Farms and villages to the east are under increasing pressure from raiding monsters. Also, after a long period of inactivity the Cult of the Jackal is rumoured to be stirring once more. The Party investigates both.

Coira 29 1084 Party arrive at Kapos, spend a few days here gathering information.
C 31 Leave Kapos, journey is mostly upriver by boat.
C 33 At a river waystation Party are approached by someone looking to join; they take him in: Homynus(Mk-3) joins.
C 34

Party's boat ambushed from shore, easily dealt with. Attackers all have an odd circular brand on their necks, this shows membership in the Cult of the Iron Ring according to a captive questioned later.

Decide to backtrack ambushers to their base, so leave river.

Arrive at a farmstead under siege, take out lots of Knill to get in then help residents defend during night. Knill mount a major assault a few hours later, take all of farm's horses but otherwise fare badly, then leave.

C 35 Party asked to recover horses, they track raiders south to another battle site - it seems raiders were themselves attacked, and they and some horses killed. Party have to deal with some large carrion beetles feasting on remains.
C 36

Track missing horses to a small camp run by a 'purveyor of fine equines'. Negotiations fail when a bandit attacks Astacoe; the Party soon clean house.

At one point during this, Lesilkasig casts Invisibility 10' Radius while in corral with horses; several horses turn invisible and quickly panic, Lesilkasig lucky not to get trampled to death.

Loot camp and sack out.

C 37 Back to farmstead with horses, Diote and Astacoe come away with fine warhorses for their trouble.
C 38 Head south for Xitaqa, rumoured to be Iron Ring's base.
C 39

A patrol attacks, easily dealt with; they also have ring-shaped marks on their necks.

Sneak past a bunch of rock-throwing monkeys into a half-buried settlement, notice a yellow-robed man flying past and into a nearby tower carrying one of the defeated patrol members.

Explore a bit, then retreat well clear and rest for a few days.

Auril 1 Try to get back into Xitaqa; Lesilkasig and Astacoe become ill due to bat bites, retreat again.
A 2

A wandering Carrion Crawler (which has been quite enjoying all the corpses the Party's been leaving in the area) just about kills Astacoe before anyone else notices it; they kill it, then Europa has to deal with the eggs it laid in him.

Party stay put for day to recover. Camp hailed in afternoon - a stranger arrives who seems to know the area well, he seems useful so Party take him in: Martin Strider(R-2) joins. (Astacoe takes a long hard look at this guy; he knew a similar person - also a Ranger named Martin - in his previous life on Dafan, but soon concludes this is a completely different individual who just happens to share the same name and class)

After learning what is where from Martin Party decide to start wiping out Knill tribes, so head west.

A 3

Arrive at lair of one tribe, stealthy invisible approach soon turns into a pitched battle as Party invade; and Party wade through several waves of Knill and wolves in a long rolling battle. Knill leader flees.

Rescue Babushka, an elderly prisoner; Martin escorts her and a captive Knill outside while Party explore.

Astacoe falls in river, almost drowns (and piranha almost kill him too); Europa throws a rope and is lucky to haul him out.

An out-of-place group of undead Khri-Halai guard a room with a chest full of money. Party then leave.

Outside, Martin saw Knill leader and one other run away, he shot down a third.

Babushka gives Party lots of info they already know, along with one new wrinkle: Khri-Halai (or Hagalen?) are involved here as well; some living ones recently left with other prisoners.

Leave for Babushka's home, Cherkass.

A 4 Arrive Cherkass, given a hero's feast. Europa needs training and Party figure they've stirred things up enough here for a while, so they decide to take a break for the next month or so.
A 5 Europa leaves for Ellerina (Elven land to the east) where she can train. Homynus leaves for his monastery to report. Rest hang around Cherkass for a day or two then head back to original farmstead and mostly stay there.
A 11 Homynus arrives at monastery, spends several days here, they approve of what he is doing so he is sent back to rejoin Party.
A 14 After avoiding various local wildlife, Europa meets Elves - and a guardian Ent - far sooner than she expects; they take her in and escort her to Aurelauren (main settlement in Ellerina) where she trains (to NtC-4).
A 23

Homynus arrives at farmstead and rejoins. By now, Martin has given enough information that Party are able to make a rough map of what is where around here; with this Martin leaves Party as he feels he can be more use as a solo roving scout than a field adventurer.

Party are put to work on farm - it's harvest time.

A 33 Europa leaves Aurelauren.
Eolna 7 Europa arrives at farm, Party prepare to leave.
E 9

Arrive at lair of Red Blade Knill tribe and wade through; find and release some captive Knill from another tribe but the place is otherwise almost deserted.

A room holds a ruby and a chest; ruby explodes when chest opened, Astacoe loses his magic armour.

E 10 To Viper tribe lair, see a couple of guards, then retreat.
E 11 Party's camp ambushed by Knill during night. Astacoe killed and rest of Party bashed around before prevailing. Head for town.
E 12 Arrive at Rifllian; Martin's map had referred to it as a city but in fact it's barely a small town.
E 13 Astacoe raised.
E 15 Leave Rifllian.
E 17

Arrive Viper tribe lair after spending a few days trying to find it, the entrance had been concealed while Party away.

Wade in to lair, run into resistance, and a pitched battle vs. 23 Knill goes well for Party who end up with several captives. Talking with these reveals little of use except provides knowledge of a Human camp to the east; Party leave captives behind and head that way.

Late in afternoon Party attacked by 5 giant bats, these are a diversion for a winter wolf and a small group of Hagalen who nearly wipe Party out. Astacoe killed and everyone else below 0 h.p. at one point or another; Party decide to head back to town instead after this. Astacoe buried in the forest.

E 18 Arrive Rifllian, start a treasury and training (Diote to F-4) break. Also start recruiting muscle.
E 22 A Tegrashi signs on: Cerley(F-2/T-2) joins.
E 24 With treasury done and Astacoe not easily coming back, Lesilkasig retires. (see below)
E 27 Leave town; deep in woods a familiar face shows up, and Martin rejoins.
E 28

Party think a nearby logging camp is a Jackal Cult centre; Martin thinks otherwise and leads Party in, but he's only half-right: the camp is instead a base for the Iron Ring crew and they attack Party en masse; Party prevail - just.

A captive, Hyppolita, gives some useful info; Party head east as a result.

A Centaur sneaks (!) into Party's camp in evening, gives more info about what is where here once noticed.

E 30 Arrive at small city of Terrie's Hold, turn Hyppolita over to locals then spend a few days shopping and resting.
E 32

Leave town, lots of people have been watching Party so they fake which direction they're going.

One group isn't fooled at all; Party ambushed a half hour out of town by yellow-robed wizard and friends. Ymet're killed and several others nearly; Homynus saves the day by leaping onto wizard in mid-air and pummelling him.

During mop-up, Cerley loots and keeps a magic ring from Ymet're. Back to town.

Inquiries of lots of temples eventually lead to a large hidden Ares temple who can revive the dead. At this point Ymetre's ring is noticed missing. Ymet're raised at significant cost.

E 34

Back to battle site to search for ring, no luck.

Continue on to Three Tree Gap, reputed to lead into the mountains.

E 35 Party met and stopped by watchers in trees, they send out a few people but negotiations are barely underway when Cerley attacks one. Cerley killed quickly but rest of Party keep their cool (and thus their lives). Missing ring found on Cerley's toe; he is then buried and left behind.
E 36 Return to Terrie's Hold.

LA-Series: Two Alone (minis) (2-0-0;0), Hriva 8 1084-Tuila 15 1085, February 2012

Background and summary: Lesilkasig gets Astacoe back from the dead yet again; they then head off on a short series of adventures during which Lesilkasig does really well and Astacoe does not.

Flaige 11 1084 Lesilkasig arrives at Xania, starts making inquiries as to who can cast Resurrection here.
F 15 The local Demeter temple can do Resurrection now and then but it'll be a while; he agrees to wait.
Hriva 2 1085 Astacoe resurrected, paid for in large part by sale of a Deck of Many Things that Lesilkasig didn't entirely own. Lesilkasig then pays to re-equip him as all his gear was left behind when he died.
H 8 Leave Xania looking for adventure, decide to try hills west of Praetos.
H 19 Meet Seriter in hills; he does not join but tells them where there be monsters need killin'.
H 23 Start LA-1, the two-member Party bashes some Turvitians. Astacoe gets to F-5.
H 31 End LA-1 as there is more here than just these two can handle; they head for town to recruit.
H 33 Run into a lower-level party out after the same Turvitians, L+A join these (thus, Astacoe does not train).
H 34 Start LA-2, this eventually turns out to be much tougher than expected and all recruits die except one.
Tuila 6 Astacoe loses a level, so right back to F-4. Again.
T 15 End LA-2, by now Lesilkasig has reached MU-6; head back to Xania.
T 30 Arrive Xania, Lesilkasig trains.
T 38 Leave Xania, slowly and uneventfully wander south.
Yavia 20 Arrive at Torcha, soon find themselves buried in other characters - a few of whom they even know.

34. Jackal Valley (10-4-3;5), Eolna 39-Flaige 16 1084, May-September 2011

Background and summary: Investigations have found much going on in this area, with various competing factions operating just beneath the surface. Having cleaned up some minor troubles, the Party now set about tackling the Cult of the Jackal by seeking out their base of operations in the mountains above Terrie's Hold. They make some progress and break some heads (including each others, at times) before realizing there might be more up here than they can handle, they then return to town to regroup and recruit.

Eolna 38 1084 Party's recruitment is getting nowhere so Diote takes matters into his own hands, he intercepts a warrior type arriving in town before anyone else can get to him; thus Hector(P-3) joins.

Party leave town heading cross-country, quickly find a hidden road so follow this to a stairway up a scarp; Gnolls guard the stairs, Party wipe out the Gnolls and head up valley.

One Gnoll flees for help, Party hide in forest and listen to a large warband heading out to find them, then sneak south.

Martin's tracking (and everyone else's eyes) tell Party that warband included at least one Giant.

Reach end of forest, decide to camp.

E 40

A dog wanders into Party's camp, they feed it, it's happy. It tags along from here on.

Take up station and watch traffic in valley, see a bunch of slaves under guard heading into mountains. Also see two small isolated buildings, decide to tackle these first so spend much of day sneaking up valley to get there.

Homynus and Martin sneak up to door of one building, but Hector makes a racket. Door opens, a jackal-headed man looks out and is immediately stunned by Homynus; a second is just as quickly run through by Martin. Party take over what turns out to be a small stone house.

The second building, nearby, is an Ares temple; Party sneak up to it then Hector boldly throws open the door. Party barely survive resulting battle; only one left functioning is Ymet're who guns down last enemy.

This last enemy remains alive, so Party wake him up and question him. He's just the guard here and though he's an Ares supporter he doesn't like the jackal-heads, nor the Gnolls. Party search temple then sack out.

During search a captive Dwarf is found, Party release him, he's somewhat dazed and has no idea who or where he is.

Flaige 1

Howling Gnolls close in overnight so Party flee up valley in a.m.; he has nowhere else to go so captive throws in with Party: Kryxos(F-2) joins. Party also take the Dwarf along, so Ori(F-4) joins (from Slave Trail E via O-series) after a fashion

Gnolls chase Party into a tunnel that spirals up inside a cliff to a bridge. Building on bridge holds two statues that attack: Martin killed almost before he knew what hit him but otherwise Party prevail.

Continue up gorge, a mated pair of Gryphons attack and don't last long. Somewhere along here Ori regains his senses.

Reach a gate on other side of a gorge, weakened Party hide nearby and rest.

F 2

To gate. While surveying this a Khri-Halai comes across valley, climbs up to Party, cordially passes through Party and gate (but won't let Party in) and keeps going.

Homynus climbs over wall and cuts himself off from Party, then nearly gets killed by lava-breathing statues. Party eventually give up waiting and destroy gate, statues clobber Ori. Homynus rescued before he bleeds to death.

Behind gate is a large open valley with various structures and villages. Party head for nearest village (it's in ruins) then stop here and watch for a while.

Some Ares types come in through gate and head up valley, a large band of jackal-heads and Ares people return later and take up station at gate after failing to fix it.

F 3

Party attack gate guards at dawn and run into a trap: Ymet're and Europa badly hurt and Kryxos nearly killed. A magic surge causes ground to erupt with undead under Ymetre's control, she sends them after an enemy wizard then collapses, so later-arriving undead show up out of control: Homynus and Europa get clobbered again.

Meanwhile, unconscious and ignored by all, Kryxos bleeds to death nearby.

Europa tries curing Ymet're but gets interrupted; her shortsword gains intelligence and becomes LG as a result.

Party retreat to ruined village and hide, ignoring and then forgetting Kryxos.

F 4

Just after dawn Party notice someone casting location spells between village and gate, they shoot her down, capture her, patch her up; but unwilling to just kill her outright they very lawfully decide to put her on trial:
o no-one can decide who will do what so roles decided by lot: Ymet're (lowest wisdom in Party!) is prosecutor, Hector is defense, Europa becomes judge;
o Europa appoints Ori as bailiff, he starts swearing in witnesses with an ever-expanding oath on his hammer;
o Alkira the captive peacefully goes along with all this, she has nothing to lose;
o much of trial taken up with deciding whose law applies here - Decast, Jackal (whose territory this is) or Party, eventual decision is a combination of Decast (though neither judge nor prosecutor are Decasti) and Party law;
o Ymet're does her best but is clearly losing against Hector so she tries a spell, Ori throws her out;
o Party learn Alkira is a wizard whose role here is to advise the Jackal cult, also that Jackals don't get to keep the slaves they capture;
o Alkira has not done any raiding herself but has advised on tactics for those who have;
o Ymet're returns in time for Europa's judgement: Alkira sentenced to a 5000 g.p. fine and 1 month of community service, as Party is the only community here it is immediately obvious Alkira has just been sentenced to join Party;
o Ymet're not happy with this so tries a Scorcher to kill Alkira, Ori interrupts again, resulting surge brings a piano down on Europa, so Europa killed (at -63 h.p.);
o during resulting argument Homynus quietly slips over and tries to run Alkira through but she sees him coming and alerts all, Alkira dies anyway and Homynus almost in the brawl that follows.

Diote is able to hear Alkira's dying words, it seems her original intentions may not have been hostile. Party also realize their only curing source is Hector - once a day for not much - and they are stuck deep in enemy lands; so after some judicial arguing they decide to retreat to town.

Run into and kill some Ares Clerics and a jackal-head escorting slaves; release slaves. Some of Party don Ares robes while rest join falsely-bound slaves as a disguise to get back down valley.

Homynus does a good job talking Party and slaves past a pair of Ares types at head of valley.

F 5

Reach Terrie's Hold, rescuees each given a few g.p. and sent on their way.

Resume trial arguments, Ymet're eventually ordered to serve Party as a hench for duration of adventure; her pay will consist of 1000 g.p. and coverage of half of her upcoming training costs (regardless of Party's overall gain or loss). Start recruiting.

F 6 James(NrC-3) and John-brother-of-James(WrC-3) join, proving their worth by helping incurable Ymet're and Homynus recover over the next few days.
F 9

Now healthy, Party leave town.

Meet and kill some Gnolls at valley entrance. Afterwards, James and John sacrifice the Gnolls' weapons, then play a victory tune on drums - attracting dozens more Gnolls and a Giant from forest! Party flee back to town.

F 10 Someone named Dewara talks to Party and helps Ymet're buy a bunch of black cloaks as disguises.
F 11 Try again. Black robes get Party past Gnolls and up valley until observant Ares types catch on; Party kill these.
F 12

Into mountains. A giant lizard attacks, John is lucky to survive as it carries him down a high cliff and doesn't drop him, and Homynus spectacularly rides down cliff on lizard's back.

To upper gate, disguises fool guards but Hector still sets off a painful glyph. Hide in woods. Dog reappears overnight.

F 13

To a mostly-ruined village, only occupant is an old woman and her dogs; conversation here produces little.

A group of jackal-heads attacks - Diote killed by these and John-brother-of-James killed by an Ori follow-through. Party retreat to different woods to rest for a few days.

James casts Death Prayer on John-his-brother later.

F 15

To next village, plow in here. One heroic villager stands in long enough for Hector to fumble all over the place while blind Ori slaughters everything in his path. Party mop up.

During this Homynus chases one villager further up valley, sees what looks like a whole city around the next corner and retreats fast. On hearing this news, and running short of people, Party decide to head for Terrie's Hold.

F 16 Arrive Terrie's Hold after an unusually quiet trip, start a long treasury break.
F 19 A few days in Terrie's Hold have Party thoroughly paranoid: people are spying on them, others are spying on the spies, some spies are spying on each other, etc.

35. Desert Gate (8-4-4;2), Flaige 31-40 1084, September-November 2011

Background and summary: A much-revamped Party tries again against the Jackal Cult and this time succeeds - with help from Ares and His supporters - in wiping it out.

Flaige 21 1084 Recruiting produces results: a spy approaches Party and makes himself known, he is with another adventuring group who are also seeking people, so after discussions the groups merge: Brelach, Ferras, Hilmni, and Tulsana all join.

F 29 Rhiannon(NrC-3) joins in her shiny armour, not seen since Slave Trail A; she was wandering by.

Leave Terrie's Hold; all don black robes as disguise, this offends Brelach's fashion sense.

Re-take Ares temple in valley, take a prisoner; and notice a new statue in temple. Prisoner says it is there so Ares can keep an eye on things.

F 32

Party pull statue down. Ares shows up. (!) A few people back off but Ymet're interrogates Him instead until He shuts her up with Silence for half an hour or so. Prisoner released. Statue put back.

To head of valley, two Ares types stand guard here. Tulsana puts them to sleep then Ymet're kills one; it starts talking with Ares' now-very-annoyed voice: He Silences her again (wears off later) and takes away her weapon skills permanently.

Up to hidden valley, find dead Jackals and Ares types, looks like they fought each other.

To a new village, looks recently deserted after a battle except one Wraith attacks and doesn't last a round.

Search village, then sack out. Find 12 gold coins neatly stacked in an otherwise trashed building.

F 33

Left boots of 5 party members go missing during night, Party find them stacked in same place as coins yesterday.

Carry on into valley until a Purple Worm erupts from ground and swallows Hilmni. Rhiannon, Ori and Ymet're all end up inside it as well, Ymet're lets off a couple of blasts from a lightning wand while in here and costs Ori several magic items; Rhiannon also loses an item and the resulting surge gives her a Commune - while at -9 h.p. and unconscious! Fortunately, Lugh is in a good mood…

Worm slain, largely by items exploding inside it. On this, perfectly-healthy Rhiannon and not-so-healthy others appear beside it having been rescued by Lugh, all are soon patched up. Rhiannon also now has a slightly better idea of what Party is supposed to be doing here.

Watch as another group enters valley and starts clobbering people, Party use their distraction to move farther in.

F 34

Leaving a decoy camp and fire behind, Party trundle through night to a small forest and hide here. Frosty weather.

Notice a large building in distance that seems to be faintly glowing gold, between one thing and another Party think this is probably their goal.

Brelach scouts to building while Party watch a battle break out across valley; then Brelach and Ymet're sneakily take care of building guards while noting guards are looking inward as much as outward.

Party arrives and wades in, lots of skeletons and zombies await - Tulsana and Ferras almost killed but Party prevail. During this Ymet're learns she can't even fight with her fists.

Find a 30' statue, Brelach decides to climb it. Several smaller statues come to life to defend it, then go berserk when Brelach pushes it over. Brelach leaps on to a cage hanging over a pit, a statue follows, the chain breaks, and Brelach amazingly jumps clear as cage and statue go down pit.

Meanwhile Rhiannon tries to cast a spell while badly hurt and passes out, resulting in a massive surge that in the end has little effect. Rest of Party clobbered silly.

Decide to retreat and rest but a scream from pit turns them back. Hector tries climbing down and draws out a Gray Ooze, then Party lower chain down and haul out 17 terrified jackal-head types; they had gone down there to hide but have since been getting systematically massacred by a tentacled horror, this is all that's left out of dozens that went down and maybe all that's left anywhere.

Party and jackals surprised to find Laure is their only common language; after some discussion they join forces (for now) and sack out.

F 35

Spend day learning about Jackal culture, also learn a door at rear of temple leads to desert.

In evening lots of company arrives: a few dozen Ares types and about 50 slaves from outside, and 10 Hagalen from the rear door. Party and Jackals quietly watch as Hagalen pay for slaves, meanwhile Brelach sneaks invisible through rear door. Ares types leave, Hagalen (and a few Aresians) take slaves to desert; Brelach stays behind door and opens it again once everyone else has left.

Party and three Jackals through to desert, soon track down Hagalen camp; Party charge in and start a 5-way battle: Party, Hagalen, Jackals, Ares types, and slaves. Party and Jackals prevail after a long messy brawl.

F 36

Brelach manages to so badly offend the slaves that a few of their toughest try to punch him out; Hector intervenes.

Back to temple with 2 Hagalen prisoners, all warily sack out.

Next day Tulsana enrages the Hagalen by calling them Khri-Halai; even though chained up they try to attack her anyway.

Brelach tries and fails to hire (or bribe) the Hagalen.

Eventual decision is to execute Hagalen; Tulsana goes to run one through but they wrap their chains around her. An all-hands brawl follows: Party move to help Tulsana, tough slaves jump Brelach again, Jackals and other slaves both move to defend Party and it takes intervention from Hilmni and Ymet're (who seems to scare everyone here) to prevent them fighting each other. Hector again plays referee after Hagalen killed.

Everyone rests uneasily for day.

Rhiannon is shocked to find that some Jackals come up as Good when checked.

F 37

Four heavily-armoured Ares types crash through main door just after dawn; they're here to kill Jackals, some die but the rest flee into crypts - Ares types follow and run into more than they can handle; two flee back out in terror and run into Party ambush, but Party are badly outgunned and all their Jackal allies are now dead.

A spectre wafts out chasing Ares types, Ferras moves to intercept and dies in one strike: Ferras killed.

Tulsana casts Spook at enemy fighter; he flees right through spectre and fortunately for all it turns to chase him, neither is seen again.

Remaining Ares type is a high-level Cleric with a very nasty weapon: Hector disintegrated when hit by it but rest of Party manage to prevail.

When the last Jackal died Ymet're's quest was complete; her reward shows up during battle: training (to MU-4), a new spell, and a minor magic item.

Party figure they're done here, leave with rescuees for Terrie's Hold; Brelach and Tulsana taunt rescuees all the way.

F 39 Two Ares Clerics join group when told there's no Jackals left, help all avoid Gnolls etc. in valley, then leave later.
F 40

All arrive Terrie's Hold, rescuees sent on their way.

It's winter solstice/new year's eve so everybody celebrates; somebody feeds Brelach a love potion and he falls in love with Ymet're, rest of night is lost in drunken soap opera fuelled by Tulsana.

Hriva 1 1085 Hungover Party leave for Xania after Ori picks up his newly-repaired hammer.
H 9 Stop by Homynus' monastery to find he's stuck here long term, his actions during trial of Alkira on Flaige 4 have caught up with him; he must either leave the Order or put in two years of silent meditation and contemplation.
H 19 Arrive Xania, start a treasury and training break.
H 28 After talking for weeks about plans to head into mountains and bash monsters, Party now inexplicably change their minds, buy a boat, and prepare to put to sea…

40. Old Tanner's Rock ( - - ; ), Tuila 11 - 1085, December 2011-

Background and summary: A Party goes boating - in winter. Not content with this, they then fly an airship around for a while - still in winter.

Hriva 31 1085 Recruiting in Xania produces some results: Kit(F-3) and Ralk(R-3) join.
H 37 Rhiannon finds another shiny suit of armour, this one's occupied: Nike(Cvr-4) joins.
T 9 Ship finally ready to go; with new sails, ballistae, cargo and a crew of 22. Big party to celebrate.
T 11 Set sail for the Kailos Islands.
T 15 Start finding islands, put ashore at a small town on one, sell some cargo (though Tulsana gets nowhere in selling a shipment of mittens she threw in). No adventure here, so carry on.
T 19 Stop at a village on another island, an old-timer here tells tales of interest and steers Party to Old Tanner's Rock; Party arrive there near nightfall but stand off and wait till morning to land due to rough weather.
T 20

Row to rock after weather abates, go ashore. Only structures on rock are a large black tower and a smaller ruin that proves to be a wellhead.

Ring doorbell on tower, no response.

Try a small door, a Ghoul behind lasts no time at all. Brelach listens at a tiny door inside and gets swarmed under by several more Ghouls: the door and wall were illusions. Various people get paralyzed (including Tulsana who is almost immune) but Party prevail, then stand off until all have recovered.

During battle Nike and Ori start arguing over who is protecting who.

A Wraith awaits behind another door, no problem.

Find a closet full of metal rods, realize they are dismantled scaffolding, reassemble outside to get to an odd door two floors up.

Varlan the butler appears at front door and politely asks Party what they are doing. In response half the Party shoot at him, he ignores this and invites everyone inside. He then fireballs Party's rowboats to make sure Party stay put.

Varlan calls his boss, he arrives an hour or so later: it is Kallios, and he is very interested to hear of Party's recent dealings with Ares. He then asks Party to follow up on what they found.

T 21 Kallios uses Shadow Walk to get Party back to their ship (and pays for the rowboats), they sail north. (and possibly see another ship in the distance doing likewise, carrying the Party of Siiric, Creon et al. to Temple of Poseidon)
T 27 Arrive Allpike, no buyers for ship so it is given to crew as their pay. Kallios awaits.
T 28

Leave Allpike.

Camp at a lakeside waystation, notice grave of Jocastefellerinus left by Barrakos Monastery Party.

T 29 Arrive at a huge cave in hills, Kallios again awaits. He loans Party his airship (hangared in cave) and a pilot: Icarus "Lunchmoney" son of Daedalus(B-3) joins.
T 30 Take off in airship. Icarus does his best to teach Party how to drive it but only Brelach catches on at all to start with; Tulsana sort-of figures it out later in theory but in practice is a bit wobbly.
T 31

Continue flying past Elven lands, pick up an Elf escort - also flying - during day; when Party drifts over Elven forest their ship is forced down at wand-point. Amazingly, nobody dies in resulting discussions.

Party anchor in channel between Elven forest and the Godswall.

T 32

Several marine ghouls ("a flock of seaghouls") climb anchor chain during night, Party easily prevail.

Icarus finds pass through mountains and barely gets ship through it, high winds toss it around like a leaf. Some Giants in a ravine below add to the fun by chucking a few long-range boulders. Party drop a few in return to little effect.

Reach desert and anchor for night.

T 33

Fly around until a beam of light draws Party to a corpse in sand. Corpse has a glowing Corellon symbol in its skin so Ymet're pokes it and has a brief chat with Corellon. Corpse recovered over Brelach's objections.

Find village of Al-Turah. Brelach and Tulsana impress no-one with their flashy entrance but get some info anyway.

T 34

Reach city of Mel-Forai, another grand entrance by B+T. Ralk and Icarus stay on airship, rest into town.

Ymet're and Tulsana get Party into an Elvish temple, its residents ask lots of questions about corpse then agree to help with it. Everyone then goes shopping except Kit who goes drinking and Nike who goes to keep an eye on Kit.

T 35

Corpse raised - it introduces itself as Donogb (!). (a character last seen in Corellon's Crystal; none in this Party know him)

Meet an Important Person (actually, the local Shah) that evening, learn lots about what is where around here.

T 36 Now recovered, Donogb(F-5) joins. Party then wait a few days for Brelach to finish shopping.
T 38

Fly west toward rumoured Jackal-head ruins, instead find site of Flaige 35 battle (and thus, gate to Jackal Valley). Anchor here for night.

T 39

During night notice some Ares types heading into gate from desert, Party intercepts and takes them out, a passing Bulette joins the fun and also dies.

One foe carries a very magical gem, prisoner interrogation reveals it to be some sort of Elf bane. Rest for day.

T 40

Through gate intending to finish off leftover foes from Jackal-head temple; but an Ares reception committee awaits. Though greatly outgunned, Party prevail; helped immensely by some well-timed Scattersprays from Hilmni.

At one point during this Ymet're's spells turn against her, at battle's end she realizes she has no spells left for this day.

Party took a prisoner, Brelach now pays him to spread the holy word of Brelach: God of Fashion and sets him free. (!)

Loot, then return to airship and rest for day; during night those on watch realize their surroundings have changed.....

   
"Day 1"

.....and Party is now in a log cabin. A look outside shows scattered forest lit by a huge moon overhead, but this "moon" appears to have clouds, seas, continents, etc.

Burnt into door of cabin is an inscription: CLONER AND STORK.

Some confusion when sun rises but moon hasn't moved. Ymet're's happy, though: her Ares curses seem to be gone.

Ralk notices a faint trail leading from cabin, Party follow until forest attacks: several trees try to pick people up and run off with them. Party fight back except Hilmni talks to one, trees fall (or in Ymet're's case, burn to a crisp).

Things come to order, then Ymet're sets fire to Hilmni's tree - and Hilmni, he's not happy.

Hilmni then tells people trees are (were) some sort of welcoming group.

Meanwhile one tree got away with its catch, Party follow and find Donogb surrounded by over a dozen angry trees. Tulsana then realizes she and they share a language (she speaks, they are telepathic) and gets some information including that Akrayna (Party's original world) is the big one in the sky.

Party briefly consider leaving Ymet're as a sacrifice to the trees, then head towards where trees know Elves to be.

Sack out in evening, soon attacked by some little people who flee after Party slay half of them.

Immediately after this a sky-filling face peers around world in sky, Party all hear a poem in their heads, face then pulls back. A second face peers around other side with another poem, then pulls back; then both beings appear in full and do battle - and as a side effect completely shatter the world of Akrayna!

Some in Party recognize combatants in sky to be the Khri-Halai deities Azak'hri and Halai-Zek.

Brelach and Tulsana celebrate by getting extremely drunk; Brelach writes out His Ten Commandments. Various others pray…but not to Brelach.

"Day 2"

Party wake up in morning, considerable concern on noticing world in sky is still missing. Keep going.

Notice a tower on plains, head there and find it to be an almost-exact replica of tower on Old Tanner's Rock. Door has a handprint in it, only Donogb can make this do anything. Exploration gets nowhere, then Donogb puts his hand to door and says "Cloner and Stork"; things go black…..

   
Laire 1

.....and Party wake up on airship in desert with all gear etc. as it was; soon realize last few "days" were a dream! Ymet're
annoyed to find her Ares curses still nicely in place.

Nike uses a talk-rock to get in touch with Kallios, tells him of Party's recent exploits, he's intrigued by the few bits that don't completely confuse him.

Back through gate to old Jackal temple, lure up and then destroy the legendary Kartoblepas; various people flee in terror in various directions, Kit and Ymet're lucky to survive battle and Ymet're lucky her randomly-aimed lightning bolts didn't hurt Party - much.

During battle Ralk ran out into Jackal Valley, some people go to find him and have to rescue him from some vines that are trying to drag him into ground. Kit's first action in this battle is to tackle and hogtie Ymet're to stop her casting dangerous spells into Party - again.

Wait for others to return, then all down into slimy pit where Kartoblepas came from.

Nike steps into a Green Slime, valiant attempts to save her fail; Nike killed. (and the slime she turns into is later destroyed by Party)

Up a passage, open a secret door and find a crypt; slam door on various undead (including 2 Spectres!)

Explore a twisty maze, every now and then find and destroy another slime or two; also find occasional statues holding jelly-like creatures that split when hit.

Eventually all back to airship; find James en route and take him back in.

L 2 Fly to Mel Forai, start a treasury (for all) and training (for some) break. Hilmni cannot train here, Icarus volunteers to fly him to where he can, so Hilmni and Icarus retire.
