Slave Trail A (12-2-1;2), Yavia
27-38 1083, January-February 2009
Background and summary: Cassandra is asked by her
temple to investigate and break up a slaving operation in
Karnos that she has done business with in the past. Coincidentally,
around the same time Véstein the Dwarf shows up looking
for Turin, who the Party gave to these same slavers a few
months ago during Krykos
the Warlord.
Starting members (from Shadowhaunt
Temple): Cassandra(NtC-3), Aisha(MU-2/T-2), Kirkos(MU-3),
Perseus(F-3), Thimbus(MU-2), Creon(T-2), Telemachos (R-1),
Karlina(F-1), Rhiannon(NrC-1), Myiore(N-1)
|
Yavia 13 1083
|
Cassandra, Karlina and Telemachos leave on a shopping
trip to Karnos while others train.
|
| Y 18 |
They arrive at Karnos. Cassandra is soon approached
by a Dwarf asking the whereabouts of Turin Two-Axe,
last seen in Krykos
the Warlord. Cassandra brushes him off, but he persistently
follows her around for days.
|
| Y 20 |
Aisha finishes training and leaves for Nimbus' camp
with supplies. Myiore follows; Aisha notices later and
they join up. |
| Y 21 |
Cassandra etc. leave Karnos. The Dwarf follows.
That night, Telemachos finds Dwarf and brings him in:
Véstein Valstan(F-1) joins.
|
| Y 24 |
Creon finishes training; he is the last to do so, but
now half of Party are missing. |
| Y 26 |
Cassandra etc. arrive at Torcha; Cassandra told by
her temple to investigate and bust up Karnos slavers.
Cassandra does some recruiting and gets immediate results:
Cyrene(WrC-1) joins.
|
| Y 27 |
Most of Party leave for Karnos, except Telemachos who
goes to find Aisha (and Myiore).
|
| Y 28 |
Telemachos finds and joins Aisha and Myiore; they turn
south for Karnos. |
| Y 32 |
Main group reaches Karnos.
|
| Y 33 |
Led by Creon, an away group of he, Karlina, Perseus,
Rhiannon, Véstein and Cyrene walk into slave
operation and - after a very brief conversation - start
breaking heads. Karlina killed and Party otherwise
not faring well until cavalry (Cassandra and Kirkos)
arrives.
One slaver surrenders; Cassandra charms him, questioning
is just starting to get useful information when Véstein
and Creon summarily slay captive. Party then have to
fight their way out.
Between information from captive and notes found in
slavers' shop, learn Turin was sent to somewhere or
something called "Shoreward" several months
ago.
Meanwhile Thimbus, still back at Party's inn and forgotten
by all, goes through and autographs Kirkos' spellbook.
Party quickly leave town and - hoping to intercept
Aisha etc. - make camp a few miles north.
|
| Y 34 |
Thimbus goes into town on his own looking for information;
finds some that links to the Misty Rose, a ship.
He also finds leads that point to a small island just
outside Karnos' harbour.
Kirkos spends day studying papers looted from slave
store, learns shop was emptied not long before Party
arrived with slaves sent to somewhere called "House".
|
| Y 35 |
Heavy rain drives Party to seek shelter at a farm. |
| Y 36 |
Creon and Vestein get bored and set fire to a few nearby
hilltops.
Cassandra befriends a half-wild horse on farm, takes
it out "for exercise"; it bolts after failing
to buck her off. A few miles down the road she passes
Telemachos etc. finally arriving after having lost their
way; so they rejoin, as does Cassandra later after finally
convincing horse to bring her back.
All into town, hire a boat to take them to island (which
has on it a large lighthouse; speculation is this is
the "House" referenced in papers) on a one-way
trip; it does, then leaves.
Island supposedly almost uninhabited but Party find
several huts, so after dark Aisha and Thimbus sneak
in. One hut seems guarded, so Thimbus puts all nearby
to sleep then Aisha sneaks in and finds and releases
15 captives; these are sent up hill to Party except
one - a known berserker - who is turned loose in camp
to provide a very short-lived distraction. (and during
rescue Aisha realizes Party now has no boat to take
rescuees home - oops!)
Four rescuees seem halfway competent, so Party arm
these and - led by a hollering Vestein - charge en masse.
Despite thus giving defenders a few moments to prepare,
Party manages to clobber everyone they meet including
a MU-5 and a very tough F-4. Rescuees more than hold
their own in battle. MU is twice interrupted while trying
to cast Fireball, then slain.
|
| Y 37 |
Search huts during night; meanwhile infighting between
rescued slaves kills one. Party intervene and mostly
make things worse. One rescuee is pointed out as culprit.
Creon kisses Cyrene during this and gets punched for
his trouble; much glaring follows.
Culprit killed during night; other rescuees get blamed
in morning.
Set huts on fire in early afternoon, then storm lighthouse
only to find two innocent lighthouse keepers. Vestein
terrorizes them awhile, but leaves them alive.
Smoke attracts two ships. The first to arrive is the
Misty Rose; Vestein killed by its highly
skilled captain, but Party takes him down and on seeing
this, crew surrender. (captain doesn't help his side's
cause much when he sinks his own ship via spell failure)
Cyrene refuses to cure Creon after this until ordered
to do so by Perseus.
Second ship arrives, it is a rescue ship, and takes
all to Karnos.
|
| Y 38 |
Question captives, learn more about Shoreward installation
and hear of something else called Vulture Island.
Various people (Aisha to T-3, Cassandra to NtC-4, Telemachos
to R-2) realize they need training; decision is to return
to Torcha for this.
|
| Quelle 4 |
Arrive Torcha, start treasury and training break. |
| Q 15 |
Rhiannon and Myiore retire. Rest of Party decide
to revisit island and look for more loot. |
| Q 21 |
Arrive Karnos. |
| Q 22 |
To island, nothing found here. Aisha charms Creon to
distract him from frightening the lighthouse keepers;
they tell of another ship - the Persephone's Luck
- that visited and took salvage from Misty Rose. |
| Q 23 |
Questions in Karnos reveal little about Persephone's
Luck, so head along coast asking at every fishing
village. |
| Q 24 |
Find a village with answers. Aisha charms a boatbuilder
and overdoes it; Creon remains charmed, and they almost
kill each other. Both eventually put to sleep by Kirkos;
Creon leaves village in a wheelbarrow. |
| Q 25 |
A rolling soap opera starts a long and fractious journey
north. |

Slave Trail B: Shoreward (15-7-6;1),
Coira 8-32 1083, February-April 2009
Background and summary: The Party head north to take on
some more slavers. They become peripherally involved in the
murderous web of plots within plots that comprises day-to-day
politics in Praetos; some characters retire, the rest extricate
themselves and make their way to Shoreward, a known slavers'
base. The base is spectacularly destroyed by Party.
| Starting members (from Slave Trail
A): |
Cassandra(NtC-4), Aisha(MU-2/T-3), Kirkos(MU-3),
Perseus(F-3), Telemachos(R-2), Cyrene(WrC-2) |
|
|
Althaire(T-3), Nausicaa(I-1) |
|
(picked up en route):
|
Anaxamandros(Cvr-1) |
|
Quelle 31 1083
|
Party stops in Cyrax and is met by a man on a horse:
Anaxamandros(Cvr-1) joins. Creon is still
charmed to Aisha; charm finally breaks when Creon overhears
she and Kirkos discussing it. Telemachos' timely intervention
is all that prevents Creon from running Aisha through;
Kirkos makes her invisible while Telemachos plies Creon
with drink.
Cyrene and Anaxamandros spend rest of trip defending
Aisha from Creon. Kirkos by now has put half of Party
to sleep - to end arguments and fistfights - so many
times that Perseus is shedding tears for Party's charter.
|
| Coira 6 |
Arrive Praetos. Cassandra and Fjallarr (and the rest
of their Parties) meet. Creon and Thimbus leave
(to Valley of the
Dead Queen); Althaire and Nausicaa join,
and immediately start planning makeovers for Party's
females.
|
| C 8 |
Inquiries into slaving operations in town give a name:
Teveros, a trainer of gladiators. |
| C 10 |
A gladiatorial event is scheduled for the local arena.
Party (except Telemachos and Anaxamandros) attend, and
quickly scatter to the four winds:
- Perseus, Althaire, and Nausicaa try to find and
speak with Teveros; they introduce themselves as new
management of the lighthouse, on which they immediately
get surrounded and captured;
- Kirkos tries the same thing via bribery, but his
bribe is rejected, so he leaves just before P, A,
and N are taken;
- Cassandra and Cyrene work crowd trying to gather
information;
- Aisha catches the eye of Keltheres, a rich merchant
type; she ends up in his private box and stays there;
- Kirkos starts laying bets on the fights.
The first sign of trouble comes when Perseus (as Persaeleus)
is introduced as a combatant in the day's last match:
- It is a death match vs. someone named Cieran, Perseus
loses badly but is not quite killed (and Kirkos loses
his bet);
- Cassandra casts Sanctuary and tries to get
in arena but succeeds only in starting a brawl in
crowd;
- At Aisha's request, Keltheres offers to buy both
combatants;
- Cassandra gets to Perseus and cures him, then gets
arrested and hauled away;
- Perseus tries to resume the death match, but fumbles
and clobbers Cassandra with his thrown sword;
- Kirkos puts both combatants to sleep;
- Cyrene leaves, reports back to Telemachos and Anaxamandros:
"You're not gonna believe this
"
Unknown to anyone else, Keltheres makes Aisha a gift
of either of the two new slaves; she chooses Cieran.
Cassandra is fined 5 g.p. (she pays 10) and released;
she eventually returns to inn as well. Anaxamandros
leads all-hands charge to arena, except Telemachos who
goes looking for help in form of Fjallarr and co.
Find gladiators (including Perseus) being loaded on
to carts; Anaxamandros wades in to guards while Kirkos
sneaks invisibly in to arena and Cassandra puts fog
everywhere.
Perseus tries to escape but can't get far in fog.
Kirkos finds Althaire and Nausicaa inside; they had
escaped on their own and were trying to sneak out. Althaire
turns around and - now invisible - goes back in to search
for gear.
Outside, Cyrene and Cassandra can't convince Anaxamandros
to stand down; he charges after a retreating slave cart,
catches it, and tries to set it on fire.
Local militia try to arrest Anaxamandros; his idea
of law and theirs don't entirely agree, so he flees
town instead: Anaxamandros retires (and see
below).
Althaire lets several scaly bipeds loose in arena,
finds most of Perseus' gear and a bit of her own but
cannot find the Robe of Blending loaned to her by Fjallarr.
Bipeds cause another brawl in street, meanwhile Althaire
telekineses a chest into arena and drops it,
then flees.
Kirkos finds Perseus in fog and carries him out, so
all end up at inn.
Telemachos returns with Fjallarr and others; Fjallarr
not impressed that his Robe is gone, so he takes back
the Ring of Telekinesis.
Party to Zeus temple at Kerata; long discussion on
what to do next gets nowhere.
Meanwhile, Aisha becomes smitten with Keltheres:
Aisha retires without telling anyone.
|
| C 11 |
Telemachos attempts to get a message to Aisha at Keltheres'
estate and fails; he then spends day keeping watch on
estate gate.
Kirkos and Cyrene go into town to both gather info
on Keltheres and determine fallout from yesterday's
chaos; they find little of either, and so return.
During afternoon, Telemachos realizes others are also
watching gate, and him; he leaves but is followed, so
takes up residence in the Golden Goblet Inn under surveillance.
He manages to get a message to Party as to his whereabouts.
In evening, Nausicaa under disguise contrives to reach
Telemachos and share info with him; she returns to Party.
Althaire then tries to find Telemachos and fails; so
instead she chats with the watchers and leads them a
merry chase through town before returning to Party.
|
| C 12 |
During night, Keltheres and all on his estate killed.
News of this reaches Party in morning; they try to reunite
with Telemachos but he has left inn; they then head
for the estate and insert themselves into investigations.
Kirkos finds Telemachos later and brings him in.
Having received at least one strange message over the
last day or so, Althaire and Nausicaa wander off during
this: Althaire and Nausicaa leave (to Barrakos
Monastery; and also don't tell anyone).
Cassandra is shown scene of Keltheres' murder; some
extra bloodstains are probably Aisha's but there is
no sign of her at all, but police think they have found
all the victims including one other Elf. Confusion ensues.
Kirkos and Cassandra borrow police bloodhounds and
track Aisha to some nearby woods; track ends suspiciously.
Cassandra talks to a crow; learns a "two-legs"
with big bat wings flew off from there last night carrying
another two-legs. Both Telemachos and bloodhounds lose
all trace of invaders not long after this.
Kirkos goes into town and talks with local wizards'
guild; learns of a cumbersome flight device that resembles
big bat wings (and that none are currently known in
the area), and of a creature that can produce such:
a Vampire.
Party decide to head for Shoreward; Cyrene leaves
to carry on the hunt for Aisha (and also ends up in
Barrakos Monastery).
Realizing that Cassandra, Kirkos, Perseus, and Telemachos
are all that's left, Party goes on a recruiting drive
and gets buried in people. Claire B. Nearmeadow(NrC-2),
Phylo(F-2), Kallisto(F-2) and Audun Geirmundsson(B-2)
all join.
Perseus and Kirkos argue. New recruits wonder what
they've got themselves into.
|
| C 13 |
Head west into hills
Meet a stranger on trail; he knows the area and can
act as a guide, so Seriter(R-2/T-2) joins. On
hearing Seriter's description of the Shoreward complex
Party decide it would be easier to approach by sea;
so they turn around and go back to Praetos.
|
| C 14 |
Buy a boat and two dinghies, and set sail. |
| C 15 |
Get lost during night, then attract attention from
a ship that makes sure they keep going.
Realize they've gone too far, so turn around; then
stop. When sun rises, realize they have stopped right
between Shoreward and accompanying island base. Keep
going.
A ship is tracking Party's movements; Party approaches,
it retreats. Telemachos, invisible, borrows a Ring
of Water Walking, chases it down, and sets it on
fire.
Enemy ship heads for Party's ship; lots of missile
fire exchanged (and lots of sails burned), then ships
collide. A major battle follows; Party end up (barely)
winning, capturing enemy ship and 15 crew in process.
A spell failure during this changes Cassandra's gender:
Cassandra becomes Kassandros.
Audun charms a captured Poseidon Cleric, gets lots
of useful info about Shoreward and Vulture Is. installations.
Cleric owns captured ship; Audun tricks him into signing
ownership over to him; meanwhile everyone else puts
out various fires.
Both ships to shore, both need repairs; they are left
in a village near Praetos.
|
| C 16 |
Evil captives taken to Praetos and turned
over to authorities. Non-evil ones hired to crew ships. |
| C 17 |
Kassandros to Praetos, gets gender change at least
temporarily undone, so Kassandros becomes Cassandra
again. |
| C 18 |
Party head for Shoreward via land. |
| C 19 |
A detour up an interesting-looking ravine leads to
a colony of gibbering goo. Entire Party confused
except Claire and Kallisto, and little Claire has the
battle of her life! Everything soon enough comes to
order.
Continue exploring, find a cave; inside is a much bigger
gibbering thing floating in the air: Kallisto killed
and only Kirkos and Cassandra stay sane, but it falls
to Kirkos' Magic Missiles.
Inside cave, Telemachos goes down wrong passage and
finds yet another gibberer; trivial. Party sack out.
|
| C 20 |
Continue through hills. |
| C 21 |
During night a small band of Grashi attack; a spell
failure from Claire gives Perseus a one-shot breath
weapon, he hits Cassandra and Telemachos with it.
Party, somewhat mangled, spend day backtracking Grashi.
|
| C 22 |
During night, an island offshore erupts, Party not
concerned.
In morning, island goes BOOM; Party buried by about 4
inches of ash. Stay put for days. |
| C 24 |
Finally reach Shoreward, spend night observing. |
| C 25 |
5 people leave complex, Party track down and attack;
kill 2 and capture 3. Audun charms one, gets lots of good
info about complex and inhabitants; Party end up hiring
all 3 captives. Stay put for day and all of next; rain
turns fallen ash to slick gooey mud. |
| C 26 |
After nightfall, move in on complex; Telemachos, Claire,
and Kirkos easily take out two hilltop guards.
Kirkos, Claire, and Seriter then take out watchtower
occupants; Party advances to tower.
All sneak into main building until Telemachos sets
off an alarm, then just clobber everything that appears.
Guards try to load slaves onto a boat while Party battle
their bosses; boat gets away but only ends up with one
or two slaves on it as the rest don't quite get there
before Party intervenes. Cassandra tries to take over
as "the new management"; rest of Party not
so sure about this. Liberal application of money gets
most ex-guards onside; the rest are bound and left to
one side.
|
| C 27 |
During night, explore most of complex and arm some
of the ex-captives.
Find an Ares temple with a bell on altar; Perseus takes
bell and soon learns it talks, but it doesn't prove
very useful.
The gladiatorial training area is barred; negotiations
go nowhere, so Party batter their way in and find a
tough fight:
- Kirkos puts Party's front line to sleep but leaves
head trainer awake, so hugely-outgunned Audun becomes
front line;
- Two gladiators change sides during battle; one
is worth keeping, so Zxancs(F-2) joins;
- Cassandra heats head trainer's armour and eventually
badly hurts him;
- With no other options left and Party members falling
all around her, Claire gamely stands in against the
head trainer - and manages to bring him down! On this,
everyone else surrenders.
Find an outbuilding full of exotic animals and their
trainer; leave these alone.
Party loot rest of complex, between arguing over what
to do with rescuees; all end when word comes that a
ship is approaching from Vulture Island. Round up rescuees
and hired guards, set fire to complex, and leave. (completely
forgotten are the bound-up ex-guards, who are left to
burn - or worse; as a few magic items missed in searching
blow up rather spectacularly during fire
oops!)
Make good a mile or two, then find a defensible spot
and sack out for day.
A ship follows Party's progress for a while, then disappears
when Party heads inland.
|
| C 28 |
Decide to take a much longer route back to Praetos
to avoid possible ambush. Food at a premium as 58 hungry
people are competing for it. |
| C 29 |
A round of infighting among rescuees during night sees
one dead by morning. |
| C 30 |
Arrive Kerata, learn a bounty has been placed on Party
by Tevara, a well-known (and slightly shady) merchant
type.
Zeus Clerics verify Party's story, then send word up
to get bounty removed.
Rescuees, ex-guards, etc. all provisioned and sent
on their way.
|
| C 32 |
Word arrives that bounty has been lifted; Party still
cautioned to watch their step in town.
Lots of people realize they have bumped, so a treasury
and training break begins.
Audun retires; he's a Bard, training takes a
long time.
|
So
what does Anaxamandros get up to?
After leaving the Slave Trail B
Party, Anaxamandros heads south in search of adventures that
do not involve Praetos. By late Auril, he has met and become
hench to Farley; they and their Party head into the
Sphondalai looking for trouble. In Flaige, they find it: Farley
and Anaxamandros are pretty much the only survivors as the
rest of their Party gets pounded by all sorts of large humanoids
up to and including Giants. During this, Anaxamandros becomes
Cvr-3.
After this, Farley heads south and takes up space in any
pub he can find, mourning the death of his old mentor Cavendish.
Anaxamandros keeps the faith, however, and heads back into
the mountains seeking to avenge this same death; after a month
or more of fruitless searching, he runs into the Sphondalai
Wanderings Party and takes up with them.

Slave Trail C: Vulture
Island (9-1-1;3),
Auril 6-16 1083, April-May 2009
Background and summary: The Party continue disrupting
the local slave trade at every opportunity. This time they
take on an operation based on a small island just offshore
from the Shoreward base, but find nothing but a reception
ambush and an otherwise mostly empty island.
|
Starting members (from Slave Trail

Telemachos(R-3), Claire(NrC-3), Phylo(F-3), Audun(B-3),

| Auril 2 1083 |
Cassandra notices someone following her;
introductions are made, and Amphion(T-2) joins.
|
| A 4 |
Cassandra makes inquiries as to what became of the
investigation surrounding Keltheres' death, and Aisha;
she gets stonewalled by the Zeus types, but they mention
recently receiving a message saying only Aisha is alive.
Party file this away for future reference.
It also becomes apparent that bounty on Party (see
Coira 30) disappeared due to someone unknown wanting
the Party to succeed; the Zeus temple may have had little
or nothing to do with it.
|
| A 6 |
Training done, all to Party's ship, and
to sea. |
| A 7 |
Heave-to well clear of island; at one point notice
a vessel leaving, heading north.
Move in at dusk; after dark Party leave ship (which
keeps going) and are towed to island in dinghies by
Telemachos and Seriter, each water-walking.
North side of island too high and steep to climb, so
try east end - this works, so everyone up cliff. Dinghies
left at cliff base. Lots of cautious scouting follows.
A lookout post that appears empty in fact holds several
invisible guards; Party easily deal with these.
Into complex
and into ambush: a Fireball
ravages entire group, then doors open and attackers
appear. Amphion killed and rest of Party in trouble,
but they manage to prevail. (spellcaster getting hit
with his own Fireball helps)
Cassandra tries out her new Sword of Charming on one
attacker and makes a new friend named Utena; she learns:
- island inhabitants have been somehow following
Party's progress day by day;
- most of slavers and all captives have left;
- those remaining on island are only here to "greet"
Party.
Utena then realizes all his remaining superiors have
been killed, so he welcomes Party to "his"
island.
|
| A 8 |
After a few hours of looting and resting, Perseus opens
a door and walks straight into 3 huge hungry Turvitians;
they don't last long.
Telemachos killed by a glyph Utena didn't mention.
|
| A 9 |
Lots more exploring; eventually find a hidden passage
to rest of island. Passage emerges in a very small forest;
Utena killed and Seriter almost by its resident deformed
Owlbears. Party retreat. Utena noisily eaten.
Kirkos explores some of island and disables several
ballistae.
|
| A 10 |
Back to forest; Owlbears soon defeated.
Find a garbage dump in forest. Kirkos roots around
until interrupted by the 2 resident Otyughs: Kirkos
killed and Phylo and Perseus diseased before Otyughs
taken down.
Wade through rest of now-empty complex, finding only
one or two leftover creatures.
|
| A 11 |
A major storm washes Party's dinghies away. Perseus
tries unsuccessfully to build a raft over the next few
days. |
| A 14 |
Cassandra and Phylo water-walk across to the Shoreward
base; find a crewman from their old boat (it sank in the
storm) and two dories, which they tow back to island. |
| A 15 |
Party towed in dories by water-walkers to mainland. |
| A 16 |
Arrive Praetos, start a long treasury and training break. |
| A 17 |
Determine Telemachos cannot be raised; he was marked
by Ares during Shadowhaunt Temple and his soul is now

Slave Trail D: Markessa's Laboratory (15-7-4;7),
Eolna 12-Flaige 22 1083, May-October 2009
Background and summary: A primary buyer of slaves
seems to be someone called Markessa. As any slaves she buys
are never seen again, the Party head north to find out what
she is doing with them. They free lots of slaves and
kill lots of slavers (and get in lots of arguments), but cause
so much devastation that they never really do determine what
Markessa is up to; only that it somehow involves experiments
with cloning.

| A 33 |

| A 37 |
Cassandra places an order for +3 chain
mail, it'll be ready sometime next Laire. By now, Party
know that someone named Markessa - a known customer of
the Vulture Island and Shoreward outfits - is becoming
desperate for slaves; her base is a few hundred miles
north, so Party decide to head there and find out why
the slaves she buys are never seen again. |
| Eolna 1 |
Everyone finally finished training, Party hires a guide,
boats across strait and heads up into Barrakos Hills.
Days of travel follow, punctuated by occasional minor
battles with some of the local wildlife and detours
to avoid the rest.
During travel, Cassandra and Chembri become romantically
involved.
|
| E 9 |
Meet another adventuring party - the Northern
Star Company - heading south for Decast. (see here
for what later becomes of this) |
| E 12 |
Find the small town of Anaish and, after
making inquiries, pick up a mage: Breary Kimenestra(MU-5)
joins. |
| E 13 |
Find road to Markessa's fortress; meet
an empty departing supply wagon; driver tells of a larger
city - Qar'nora - a few days north. |
| E 14 |
Continue along trail, completely fail to
notice watchers high in trees. |
| E 15 |
Just before dawn, Party's camp ambushed by 21 Grashi
and a couple of strange larger creatures. Breary wipes
out half the Grashi with a Fireball; Chembri
scares off one of the big critters, and Party easily
mop up the rest.
Realizing they've been discovered, Party become much
more cautious. Cassandra charms one surviving Grash
thus Digger(F-1) joins; he has brains, and gives
all kinds of useful information including flag codes,
building layouts, etc. He also tells of what Markessa
does with her slaves (and some of the Grashi; they don't
like her much): she is using them as experiments in
building new lifeforms out of old ones.
Cassandra casts Animal Friendship on a marten
and sends it out scouting. (though none would ever
know it, it dies within half an hour
) Party
sack out for day.
|
| E 16 |
An isolated watchtower stands on a hill some miles
south, Party sneak up and easily capture this. Meanwhile,
Breary does some invisible scouting from the air (much
quicker and more efficient than a marten!) and returns
to inform Party a ship has just arrived at the dock.
Leaving Claire and Breary to hold this tower, Party
head for another some 15 miles north.
|
| E 17 |
Reach and capture second tower but nowhere near as
smoothly, and a near-brawl breaks out after Kirkos puts
Audun and Seriter to sleep.
Tower guards had a pet cougar; Cassandra tames it,
then casts Animal Friendship and gains a useful
companion.
|
| E 18 |
Party raise distress flags at south tower, then north
tower. Breary and Claire start flying north to join
Party.
Main fortress sends forces to help both towers; Party
sets ambush for north group: Kirkos and Perseus up a
tree, rest hiding around clearing.
Cassandra sends her cougar off "to hunt Humans",
it soon dies.
Guards arrive; Cassandra Entangles half, Party
opens up on rest. One enterprising guard sets tree on
fire to smoke out Perseus and Kirkos; Perseus drops
to ground, Kirkos stays aloft.
Kirkos puts all sorts of people to sleep; just as battle
is coming to order Audun (still in hiding) throws a
spear at him, sparking a 5-way brawl "Kirkos vs.
Audun vs. Phylo vs. Seriter vs. Perseus"; Chembri
soon dives in as well.
Audun nearly kills himself climbing (and falling out
of) burning tree to retrieve his spear.
Meanwhile, Digger and Cassandra have persuaded almost
all those trapped to change sides; Party gains 13 new
members!
Just as things settle down, Breary and Claire finally
arrive.
Burning tree attracts group heading to south tower.
Breary goes out to scout these from air but is brought
down; she has long-range communication so can call for
help, and Perseus and Seriter charge off into woods.
Rest of Party, including new recruits, follow more sedately.
Perseus and Seriter find trouble; Seriter leads it
off while Perseus carries on, eventually bailing Breary
out with her help.
Main Party finds main enemy force; a quick battle produces
4 more new recruits. Then Seriter chugs in, still being
chased by three suddenly unfortunate guards.
Back to north tower, sack out.
|
| E 19 |
A Chimera attacks during night and kills 4 recruits.
To south tower. An animated tree attacks en route and
takes out another recruit, and Breary sets the forest
on fire.
|
| E 20 |
Check out some other watchposts, they
are deserted. Meanwhile, Breary's forest fire rages eastwards. |
| E 21 |
During night, an enormous creature wanders by. Party
make enough noise to attract its attention so it changes
course and attacks. Zxancs swallowed by its first bite,
and does a yeoman job hacking at its insides before
being mostly digested; Audun summons some Viking warriors
who help out greatly, and somehow Party manage to bring
the beast - which resembles a 100'-long carnivorous
Brontosaurus - down.
Perseus, also swallowed, finds Zxancs and assumes she
is dead (much of her flesh is missing), and is astonished
when she starts moving; so he cuts his way out and hauls
her along. Lots of cures are dumped into her; she is
obviously alive, though it is not clear how as she is
a gruesome mess and likely missing some important parts.
Party cut head off beast and start dragging it to where
it can be seen from fortress.
Chembri, Cassandra, and Kirkos leave to haul Zxancs
back to town, skirting edge of still-burning forest
fire.
|
| E 22 |
Beast head left in sight of fortress with
a signal flag in it. Rest of Party (and recruits) turn
around for town. |
| E 25 |
Chembri group arrives at Qar'nora. |
| E 26 |
Rest of Party arrive at Qar'nora.
Inquiries about Zxancs reveal she was "saved"
(i.e. not allowed to die) by some armour she was wearing,
and will require repeated Heal spells to become
functional. These are then cast; she mostly returns
to normal except now has shocking white hair, slightly
different looks, and is a bit less sturdy (down a Con.
point).
Training begins: Phylo (to F-4) and all the Clerics:
Cassandra to NtC-5, Claire to NrC-4, Chembri to WrC-3.
|
| Flaige 3 |
Training done, leave Qar'nora; but have
lost 3 more recruits while here. |
| F 5 |
On joining Party, Breary had told her family
she would be home long since; an argument over whether
to send her home (she'd rather stay here, for now) is
resolved only when Cassandra casts Messenger on
a bird and sends it to Breary's home in Anaish. A return
message arrives later but Breary does not reveal its contents. |
| F 7 |
Arrive in area of fortress, check out Brontosaurus
corpse. Seriter finds and follows some recent tracks
from here, and leads Party to someone named Tracy who
seems to know a surprising amount about them. This fellow
warns Party that Markessa has resupplied her fortress
with guards, some of who are exact copies of some of
Party's recruits, including Digger. He then leaves.
Also realize the fire started by Breary burned out
about a 25-mile swath of forest before dying out.
|
| F 8 |
Lots of planning and scouting. The Puridius flag now
flies over the fortress, indicating a change of ownership.
Cassandra casts Animal Friendship on a few seagulls
but they are no help whatsoever.
|
| F 9 |
To dock area, Cassandra and Seriter scout invisibly.
Take out a barracks, charm one person here. She is
with the Puridian army, here as muscle. She recognizes
some of Party's recruits as people she has just sailed
with copies of, and is rather concerned. But she will
not break her vows of service and desert army, so Audun
attacks. Half of Party join in, the rest leave.
During battle, Kirkos casts Burning Arms and
almost sets the building on fire; much arguing follows
as this was supposed to be a stealth mission i.e. no
big smoke signals. Cassandra puts fire out shortly after.
A couple of people come up trail from dock; Perseus
shoots and kills one, the other flees. Party raggedly
follows, except Claire casts Hold Person on Kirkos
and Breary retaliates by webbing up Claire
and
Phylo, who happened to be nearby.
A fighter-type from ship is a handful for Perseus -
Breary charms him but Perseus and others keep attacking,
and he soon dies: Breary very annoyed. Party search
buildings and ship but nobody loots the Fighter...
Capture and charm two accountant types.
Party scuttle ship, then eventually remember to loot
Fighter; and notice his shield is gone. Much suspicion
follows.
Meanwhile, Seriter notices tracks arriving then leaving;
Breary follows by flight while some others chase on
ground.
Breary catches and captures someone near fortress,
then goes invisible, picks up captive, and leaves: Breary
retires.
Make camp; everyone's shield is inspected several times.
Late at night, Perseus receives long-range communication
from Breary that essentially amounts to "Good-bye".
|
| F 10 |
Rest, except Seriter scouts dock area and finds three
sets of tracks left the ship during night.
Kirkos goes over the accounting records, finds indications
that Turin came in here in late summer and shipped out
again about a month ago...probably to an island, meaning
Party now need a ship, which they just sank...oops.
|
| F 11 |
Rest, except Seriter checks out area around
fortress for hidden access routes, finding none. Lots
of planning. |
| F 12 |
Just before dawn, sneak to base of fortress' hill and
take out a small gatehouse and signal post. Invisible
Party then sneak up hill leaving Seriter behind.
Seriter sets gatehouse on fire as a diversion; 6 guards
head down hill and end up chasing Seriter all over the
place.
Phylo sets fortress wall on fire as a second diversion;
Party go in other side except Cassandra and Phylo stay
put.
Start mopping up guards on wall until a heavy Fighter
charges; Phylo levitates up, takes him on, and almost
gets killed. Meanwhile, Cassandra opens up with Call
Lightning and causes lots of mayhem.
Party start exploring but mostly run into each other
(Kirkos exploring invisibly by himself doesn't help).
Seriter finally brings his pursuers up hill to Party,
who capture two.
Party regroup, then start exploring into fortress interrupted
only by a few minor battles and traps.
Some "mummies" (gauze-wrapped Grashi) appear,
a few people charge at these while rest are cut off
by a second group appearing from a hidden door. All
goes well until Kirkos gets a spell interrupted causing
friend and foe alike to become gargantuan; some Grashi
get squashed by hallway ceiling. A second surge caused
by the first costs Kirkos knowledge of the Decasti language
- oops.
Party just get nicely started wrecking the fortress
when enlarge effect wears off, to much disappointment.
Retreat and sack out in fortress' watchtower area.
Near sunset, watchers see badly-hurt Digger crawling
out of forest; a rescue mission brings him in, and he
reports another ship has landed and most of Party's
recruits (and some of ship's crew) are dead.
|
| F 13 |
Away team of Kirkos, Seriter, Claire and Audun sneaks
down to docks, find a guard and 19 slaves in barracks
and another man on new ship, everyone else on both sides
is dead. Kirkos manages to lure both foes to ship's
deck, then flees across the bay using Water Walk;
a disorganized battle follows and away team prevails.
Searching ship produces a personal letter of marque
from Xania city-state to someone named Reiter, probably
ship's first mate and just slain by Party.
Slaves freed and left to fend for themselves on ship.
Party regroups at fortress and continues exploring.
Find a room with 65 spaced-out captives in it; people
who try to enter room flee in fear or end up sick or
meet some other mishap. Zxancs eventually gets far enough
to be attacked and smothered by a living cloak; strange
effects end and people converge and whale on it, but
they're clobbering Zxancs as well: Zxancs killed.
Free one captive named Gwylyn, restore her brains via
Neutralize Poison. All sack out. Kirkos starts
re-learning Decasti.
|
| F 14 |
During night, Chembri leaves with Zxancs' corpse.
Wade back in to a series of small battles; then find
and take out Estelrath, a visiting slave trader.
A room full of Quitchi and Knill causes trouble, but
most damage sustained by Party is self-inflicted.
Phylo badly hurt, so retreat and sack out.
Later in afternoon, Chembri returns with lots of news:
o A small
army led by Breary's mother awaits outside to hold off
any invaders (Breary herself is nowhere to be seen);
o Rescuees
etc. can be safely sent outside and will be cared for
there;
o Zxancs
desires to return to life and has been sent to Qar'nora.
He also brings back a new recruit: Caereluin(A-3)
joins as a Thief. Perseus, Audun and Kirkos then
spend time talking to rocks; Caereluin wonders why she
is here.
|
| F 15 |
Release about 60 more captives and escort them outside;
more one-way arguing with Breary via talk-rocks.
Return to fortress, more exploring until a major brawl
in kitchen: Caereluin killed; Perseus bitten
by were-boars and becomes lycanthropic. Un-coordinated
Party interrupt at least 4 of their own spells during
this battle.
Outside again, get Perseus back to normal.
Breary's mother sees dead Caereluin and remarks "she
failed"; Party become suspicious and use talk-rocks
to ask Breary what's going on, learn Breary's mother
over-reacted to perceived snub of Breary by Perseus.
Breary not impressed; in fact quite apologetic.
Return to fortress, Breary rejoins on meeting
them here. Sack out.
|
| F 16 |
More exploring. Chembri finds and Audun charms Koko,
the resident cook.
Party hear thumping behind a door, so they arrange
themselves in battle formation and Chembri opens it;
behind it is a chained-up Medusa. Seriter and
Audun petrified (and Koko too, not that anyone
cares). Kirkos and Perseus then blindly slay it. Party
then loot area and find lots of goodies; experimenting
with a magic feather produces an anchor, which falls
on Seriter's stone foot and breaks it off - oops.
Using jumped-up strength, Phylo and Digger haul Seriter
and Audun statues out of fortress and down to woods
in hopes Breary's mother can help - turns out she can:
she fixes Seriter's foot (sort-of; he's down a Dex.
point for at least a month) then turns him back to flesh,
so Seriter revived. She can only do one of these
per day, so Audun has to wait.
Perseus and Breary stay at fortress during this; at
one point Perseus feels watched, Breary takes care of
it.
Back to fortress, more exploration turns up little
of note. Sack out.
|
| F 17 |
Initially unknown to anyone, Audun's revival goes wrong
and he comes back as a corpse: Audun killed.
Party give up waiting for Audun to appear and go outside;
a signal from forest draws Kirkos, Claire, and Seriter
to check it out. They learn of Audun's fate, and send
him to Qar'nora (with a pile of loot) to be raised.
(but unknown to any, members of Caereluin's guild
switch Audun's corpse out for hers (!) about a mile
out of camp; Audun dumped in forest, and wagon diverted
to a different temple in Qar'nora)
Back to fortress, find a shaft going down. Perseus goes
down first, but a trap puts him to sleep and he falls;
Phylo dives in after him, misjudges the distance badly,
and manages only to nearly kill herself (and clobber
Perseus) when she lands on him.
Very tight little passages below lead to a door; behind
it are some wolves, soon slain but not before they make
a lot of noise - alerting other nearby occupants of
Party's presence
Party move forward and are met by a lightning bolt;
lots of magic items destroyed, and Perseus leaves
when a surge teleports him to his birthplace just north
of Cyrax.
A major battle with Markessa and her assorted helpers.
Phylo killed, torn apart by an Owlbear; and rest
of Party in rough shape before the dust settles. Party
then go to loot Markessa and find all her items gone,
destroyed by the two fireballs she ate during battle;
fireballs also destroyed much of what had been in her
laboratory, where battle took place.
Explore, find about 30 crew from now-sunken ship and
hire the lot; they tell much of what is where here and
are put to work guarding fortress' ramparts.
Away team of Kirkos, Claire and Seriter take Phylo's
corpse to people in woods; they cast Speak With Dead
and she declines revival, so is cremated. Away team
rejoins Party in fortress. Breary and Kirkos later use
"talk-rocks" to contact Perseus (who fortunately
still has the third one) and find out where he is.
|
| F 18 |
More exploring shows crew's info to be reasonably accurate,
as far as it goes.
Find and rescue dozens of slaves; a couple of these
seem vaguely useful and are taken in: Lesilkasig
Uubo(MU-3) and Korgrim Keen-ears(F-3) join.
Breary charms a guard; Party get more info, then kill
him.
Rest of day is spent getting rescuees outside to people
in woods.
|
|
F 19
|
More exploring. Chembri goes off on his own and gets
jumped by 3 Werewolves; he and Korgrim both become lycanthropic
but Cassandra fixes this later.
Meanwhile, opening another door reveals a room with
someone in it; he seems to be expecting a different
Party and is very confused by this Party's presence.
As he seems a decent sort, Party take him in; so Astacoe
of Einnoc(F-3) joins after a long and baffling conversation.
(see below for how he
came to be here)
Kirkos wanders off, finds someone's bedroom, and is
very lucky not to die on the spot when hit by a heavy
Cone of Cold. Help arrives just before caster
can finish him off; a messy battle finally takes down
an Ogre Mage.
Kirkos had also found a tiny passage with rails and
a boxcar in it, long discussion on how to get past this.
Find a few more people in a few more rooms, they seem
mostly harmless.
Stop to rest; rest interrupted a few hours later by
a band of Knill and a Winter Wolf. Korgrim almost killed
and Cassandra and Kirkos in trouble, but a Cassandra
spell failure summons an Angel who cleans house, patches
a few people up, and then leaves. During this battle,
Breary proves hopeless at aiming her Web spells.
|
| F 20 |
More exploring. Korgrim killed by a glyph on
a door.
Find a book. Breary borrows Kirkos' hat of language
comprehension to read it, but book is trapped and blows
up, taking the hat with it. Kirkos can now no longer
read his own spellbook
oops.
A minotaur waits in ambush and hits Chembri hard, but
is then flayed to -43 h.p. within a round.
More exploring finds a half-mile passage to a hidden
exit in forest; Party goes back in and rests - after
bashing in a few more heads.
Elsewhere, the cart carrying Zxancs arrives at Qar'nora.
|
| F 21 |
Zxancs raised at Qar'nora.
Party spends day getting at and then hauling out a
mountainous treasury.
|
| F 22 |
Big debate over where to go next. Perseus diverted
to Spieadeia. Breary leaves for Qar'nora to pick up
Zxancs and (she thinks) Audun.
Zxancs, unaware of this, starts heading south.
Cassandra visits "Brema" (Breary's mother)
to tell her fortress is hers for the taking, visit does
not go well.
|
| F 24 |
Breary (flying, invisible) and Zxancs (walking)
pass each other without realizing it. |
| F 26 |
Wagon arrives at Qar'nora and delivers
Caereluin's corpse. |
| F 27 |
Breary arrives at Qar'nora - no sign of Audun as he
never got here. She starts making inquiries.
Meanwhile, Caereluin raised, using funds set
aside for Audun. She has no gear at all.
|
| F 28 |
Zxancs arrives at fortress and rejoins Party.
Caereluin leaves for points unknown, winds up
in c-series.
|
| F 29 |
Perseus arrives at Spieadeia.
Breary learns wagon delivered wrong corpse to wrong
temple, finds out corpse was Caereluin and that she
is alive. Also learns Zxancs is now with Party, so her
trip to Qar'nora has become pointless. She heads south.
Party make cautious inquiries with Brema; she can't
find any sign of Audun's corpse in camp but she and
Party do find Caereluin's grave has been dug up.
With help from forest critters via Cassandra, eventually
find Audun's remains about a mile out of camp.
|
| F 34 |
The corpse-carrying wagon arrives back at camp; driver
gives a description of who changed his cargo and course.
Cassandra, Kirkos, Claire and Brema visit - and eventually
kill - the accused.
|
| F 35 |
Breary arrives at camp and rejoins Party.
Party and about 30 hired crew set sail for Spieadeia,
but hit a rock leaving harbour and have to return and
make repairs. |
| F 37 |
Set sail again.
During this voyage, Cassandra learns that she is pregnant.
|
| Hriva 15 1084 |
Arrive Spieadeia. Perseus rejoins. |
| H 16 |
Start division of an enormous treasury. |
| H 19 |
Audun resurrected via scroll. |
| H 24 |
Treasury done, Digger retires. Lesilkasig
and Astacoe leave; they would end up in Sphondalai
Wanderings. Audun leaves for training; Breary
and Zxancs stay in Spieadeia, all others leave for Torcha
so Cassandra can visit her family and Chembri can find
training. |
| H 33 |
Arrive Torcha; Chembri leaves
for training. |
| So
who is Astacoe, and how did he get here?
Astacoe's tale is, for lack of a better term, messy.
Much of it can be found in the log for Dafan;
what is relevant here is that during his time on Dafan
he was cloned,
with the clone (Astacoe II) then being sent back to
Astacoe's original homeland of Neidra on the world of
Telenet. Soon after this the original Astacoe was revived
from death only to quickly lose all relevance by dying
again, permanently.
Meanwhile, Astacoe II was determined not only to
return to Dafan, but to this time get a whole bunch
of things right that had gone so very wrong last time.
He decided, after long and careful thought, that his
best chance to do so would be to somehow go back in
time to before he first met the Party on Dafan that
rescued him from Markessa's stockade, and on arrival
in effect replace himself with himself and take it from
there. So he poured everything he had into getting a
Wish cast on his home world in order to achieve this;
and from his perspective it worked: he appeared on a
different world near what looked like Markessa's original
stockade. He managed to get himself hired as her engineer,
thus putting himself in the right place, and also conspired
to acquire much the same gear and equipment as he had
when first met. He then settled in to await his rescue;
and though it occurred to him after a while that it
was odd that he had not in fact met himself, he just
assumed the spell had done some sort of switch, or replacement,
and thought little more about it.
It was not until the Party whose story is told here
found and rescued him that he came to realize just how
spectacularly wrong his plan had gone. As it happened,
the Wish could not take him back in time, so it simply
did what all such spells do in these sort of situations:
it found and took the path of least resistance, sending
Astacoe II (now just Astacoe) into an alternate (future)
time and to an alternate (wrong) world which happened
to contain another Markessa inside a stockade similar
to the one he remembered. Putting perhaps more faith
in the spell than it deserved, Astacoe never thought
to look for differences or clues to determine whether
he had in fact gone to the right place and time. And
though he does not know it, in the intervening time
since his departure magic has completely ceased to function
on his home world: he cannot get back, and is now stuck
here.

Slave Trail E: Island of the Slave Lords (16-4-4;6),
Yavia 1-13 1084, October-December 2009
Background and summary: Clues found at Markessa's
stronghold point to a further and higher branch of the slaving
operation out on an island not all that far from said stronghold.
So the Party go investigate this (after bashing around in
the southern forests for a while for no particular reason)
only to get thrashed badly enough to force them to abandon
the mission before accomplishing very much of use.
Starting members (from Slave Trail D):
Cassandra(NtC-5), Kirkos(MU-4), Perseus(F-4), Claire(NrC-4),
Chembri(WrC-4), Zxancs(F-4), Audun(B-4),
Breary(MU-5),
Seriter(R-3/T-3)
| Hriva 35 1084 |
Away team of Cassandra, Kirkos, Perseus, Claire and
Seriter leaves Torcha looking to kill time and monsters
in the southern forests while other people train. |
| H 37 |
Bump into the remains of another group returning from
doing the same thing; these Parties merge, so Runin(R-3)
and Branna Lightfinger(T-3) join. They tell of
a Turvitian stronghold about a day to the southeast. |
| H 38 |
Arrive at stronghold. Cassandra goes up a tree and
opens up with Call Lightning, meanwhile a Dryad
joins her on branch and tells her who to shoot - and
not to shoot.
Rest of Party is impatient and breach stronghold before
bolts are finished. Turvitians charge. Runin almost
killed by Turvitians and Cassandra's lightning; she
barely saves his life with curing later.
Clear out stronghold, and leave.
|
| Tuila 1 |
Arrive back at Torcha; now Perseus needs training(to
F-5), so stay here a while. |
| T 7 |
Cassandra takes Chembri home to the farm to introduce
him to her family; she leaves lots of money here as well. |
| T 11 |
Leave Torcha. |
| T 23 |
Arrive Spieadeia; entire Party reunites.
A Potion of Love is claimed by both Breary and Claire
from the recent treasury; Breary wins it, but Claire
then quietly pays Seriter 500 g.p. to steal it from
her. He does.
Cassandra buys Runin a new magic axe to replace the
one she blew up with her lightning.
|
| T 24 |
Leave Spieadeia by ship, with Digger in charge. |
| T 37 |
Arrive Praetos. Cassandra has some armour on order that
is almost ready, so all decide to wait |
| Laire 1 |
Run into Aisha and Myiore, who recently
arrived after dropping Nimbus off at the Nakki-Nakk complex
west of town. Lots of discussion ensues as to who stays
and goes in Party. |
| L 7 |
Perseus is recognized and approached by his technically-still-owner
Teverus; nothing much comes of this. |
| L 10 |
Cassandra picks up her shiny new chain mail. Seriter
leaves and joins Aisha and Myiore, who also stay put...for
now. |
| L 11 |
Leave Praetos by ship. |
| L 20 |
Arrive at dock to Markessa's old fortress. Fortress
is now held by Brema, who complains about the mess Party
left behind. Other than one very short-lived Puridian
foray a few months ago, things have been quiet here.
Party keeps going on foot toward Qar'nora. Digger and
crew stay on the ship.
|
| L 25 |
Arrive Qar'nora. Now Claire needs training (to NrC-5),
so again all wait.
Zxancs pays off a large part of her debt to the local
Lopa temple.
|
| L 34 |
Claire's ready, so all leave Qar'nora. |
| L 36 |
For no particular reason, Audun starts behaving oddly.
Claire tries Dispel Magic on him but misses badly
and hits Runin instead, serving only to disenchant his
new axe; fortunately, this is only temporary. An argument
ensues, during which it becomes obvious Audun's behaviour
was no more than a joke on his own part. |
| L 40 |
Arrive back at fortress. |
| Yavia 1 |
Sail off on ship looking for islands; find two, one
has a settlement on it. Breary overflies this and soon
realizes it is not a pleasant place. She also finds
a safe harbour on other end of island, Party disembark
here. Digger and crew are left on ship with a talk-rock;
they sail out to sea and stand by.
Explore, find a series of caves, sack out in one.
|
| Y 2 |
During night, a huge bear wanders into Party's cave
and doesn't last long.
Explore caves. One turns out to be a long series of
passages, Runin realizes they have been built to look
natural.
Runin scouts ahead, gets jumped and almost killed by
4 Gnolls before Party can rescue him; Party then wipe
out a few more Gnolls as they go along, Runin doing
72 h.p. damage to one on a single swing helps.
Runin steps on a trap and disappears into floor; he
slides down a chute into the midst of another band of
Gnolls, and is again lucky to survive. Rest of Party
soon dive down chute; Runin's cause not helped much
when Kirkos puts him to sleep, but all soon comes to
order.
Find a large cavern with dozens of Piercers:
o Piercers drop
en masse, Chembri killed without ever knowing
what hit him;
o Cassandra, Kirkos,
and Zxancs all close to death - Claire kept very busy;
o Piercers try
to get to walls to climb up and drop again, Party's
spells slow or stop most of them;
o Audun spends
the whole battle trying to finish off one Piercer, until
Perseus casually wanders by and does it for him;
o One Piercer gets
back to ceiling, Kirkos loses track of it and it drops
on him, he again survives by the skin of his teeth;
o Just as things
come to order, Runin and Audun get into an fight; Runin
is already badly hurt and Audun almost kills him;
o Audun then summons
his Vikings and sends them down an unexplored passage
while Party retreats.
With absolutely no spells left of any kind, Party sack
out.
|
| Y 3 |
Kirkos realizes he needs training, so without telling
anyone else he calls Digger at about 5 a.m. to bring
ship in; but Digger is still asleep and by the time
he replies a few hours later others have caught on.
He brings ship in anyway.
Kirkos leaves for training. Cassandra also
leaves, taking Chembri's corpse with her. Remaining
Party decide to rest for several days; they're a mess,
and Claire's now the only Cleric.
|
| Y 5 |
Explosions of Claire's glyphs herald arrival
of temporarily-deaf Aisha and Myiore, who join
after an argument; they've left Seriter with Brema. |
| Y 6 |
Start exploring again, find some Gnolls and very tough
Hyena-like creatures; Runin clobbered again.
Perseus and Audun step into a room:
o both instantly
turn to stone, or so everyone thinks;
o Breary sends
a Fireball into room, blowback hits entire Party
except Aisha, who has fled; numerous magic items destroyed;
o Perseus and Audun
snap out of it and charge Party, Audun soon paralyzed
but Perseus keeps resisting Party's spells until Breary
just webs up the whole lot. Aisha returns sometime around
now;
o someone (Perseus)
is strangling in web so Breary burns it away, then charms
Perseus before he can do any more damage;
o between fireball,
Perseus, and burning web Zxancs is now a mess, curing
arrives a second too late: Zxancs dies.
o Runin looks into
room, is immediately grabbed by tentacles and hauled
away;
o Aisha follows,
to the same result;
o Myiore takes
Audun's horn, Branna blows it and summons three Vikings,
they charge into room;
o Vikings and Party
barely defeat enemy: a statue with tentacles, or so
it seems; this returns Perseus and Audun to their senses
(and Perseus, realizing what he's just done, is very
remorseful);
o Runin and Aisha
barely alive and unable to breathe on their own, Claire
tends both until they start to recover.
Battered Party pull apart opponent's very smelly remains,
find some loot, then all retreat and rest.
|
| Y 7 |
Claire casts Speak With Dead on Zxancs, yes
she wants to come back, so all to surface and call ship
in.
Days to the north, Kirkos overhears this on his talk-rock;
when he passes the news along, Cassandra leaves Chembri
with Kirkos, turns around, and heads back south.
Party leave Runin outside with Zxancs's corpse and
head back in, so Runin leaves. Ship picks him
up later that afternoon.
|
| Y 8 |
Runin arrives at Brema's fortress, heads north.
Party explore more passages, eventually find a large
chamber with lots of occupants. Perseus loses magic
armour and magic shield to a Rust Monster, Audun also
loses magic armour. Branna, already incurable, gets
clobbered again, and things look grim until Perseus,
Breary and Branna (at this point the only functioning
Party members) finally realize most of the opponents
are illusions. On this, things come quickly to order.
While looting room, Party finds a detailed town map;
as she has flown over it, Breary confirms it is the
town above.
(this has been a very expensive couple of days for
Perseus. First he left 6000 g.p. with Runin to pay for
Zxancs' raise, which he feels responsible for; then
the Rust Monster set him back about another 8500 - ouch!)
|
| Y 9 |
Rust Monster etc. were guarding a passage leading up
into a warehouse in town. Branna, Claire and Breary
scout from air; figure out over next few days what and
where lots of things are.
Take up residence in what looks like an abandoned Fighters'
guildhouse, gain entry through a window.
Kirkos arrives at Qar'nora with Chembri's corpse, meanwhile
Runin and Cassandra meet on road.
|
| Y 10 |
During night, someone notices open window in guildhouse.
Guards and a dog come to investigate, all soon slain
by Party, who then do a good job of covering up.
A larger group of guards investigates later and finds
nothing.
During day, Branna tries sneaking in to an officer's
room through an open balcony door and gets fried; scouts
flee. (and Branna becomes even more incurable!)
Breary charms a stablehand and gets lots of useful
information about town.
Meanwhile, Chembri raised at Qar'nora, and Kirkos
starts training.
|
| Y 11 |
During night, realize streets are "patrolled"
by Ghouls.
All invisible, Party set out to explore town during
day until a voice overhead demands they show themselves;
things go wrong from here:
o guards pour out
of nearby buildings while phalanxes of guards approach
along all streets, sweeping for invisibles;
o Party scatters,
meanwhile Aisha flees, uses Jump to leap over
a phalanx, and returns to Party's base;
o Claire exposed
when hit by Dispel Magic; Myiore and Perseus
almost collide while trying to pick her up;
o Myiore drops Claire
and goes for broke, puts a couple of Viper's Bites
into massed guards, gains lots of h.p.;
o Audun, with help
from summoned Vikings, tries to gain entry to nearby
town armoury;
o Breary hits flying
enemy casters with Fireball but is exposed, lots
of archers take target practice until Perseus picks
her up;
o at -4 h.p., Breary
casts Fly into Perseus, so he drops her off on
a roof with Branna then joins Audun;
o Myiore, outnumbered
about 20-1 and surrounded, surrenders: Myiore captured.
Claire also joins Audun;
o Branna and Breary
attacked on roof, Branna puts what she thinks is a healing
potion into Breary but it fails (in fact, it is a Love
Potion); Breary and Branna killed shortly after
this.
Perseus, Audun and Claire frantically search through
armoury for a rooftop exit, they find one, and barely
get out before enemy caster can blow them away.
Perseus etc. head for caves on south shore but have
to deal with 2 Gargoyles en route; then sack out after
calling Digger to bring the boat over.
Aisha waits at base, eventually comes to realize she
may be the only survivor; she sacks out.
Meanwhile, Cassandra arrives at Brema's camp shortly
after Party's ship leaves, so she stays put.
|
| Y 12 |
Nobody shows up overnight, so Aisha heads out through
caves in morning and eventually finds Perseus etc. on
south shore.
Far to the north, Runin arrives at Qar'nora with Zxancs'
corpse.
Digger brings ship in after dark, Party evacuate island.
|
| Y 13 |
Zxancs raised at Qar'nora, but she comes back
with a quest attached: she has to kill or help kill
one of the Five Undead Lords. Chembri (still in town)
starts investigating this while Zxancs recovers.
Another Cassandra-Brema conversation goes badly; Cassandra
gets thrown out of camp, so waits on dock.
Ship arrives in evening, so Cassandra rejoins.
As it has by now become obvious to all, she finally
admits she is pregnant.
Realizing this group needs all the help it can get,
Seriter rejoins as well.
After some discussion, adventure
abandoned, or so everyone thinks for now.
Ship crew seem ready to mutiny (they don't like taking
orders from a Grash), so Digger(F-2) rejoins Party
instead.
|
| Y 14 |
All head for Qar'nora.
Chembri and Zxancs do some research on the 5 Undead
Lords over the next few days but can only find reference
to 4: Saith, Vaklari, Xangteng, and Kallios. Of these,
only Vaklari and Kallios are still around; Saith was
destroyed ages ago and Xangteng - once a local - has
not been seen or heard from in centuries. The local
sage providing this information is surprised to hear
of a potential 5th Lord.
|
| Y 19 |
South group arrive at Qar'nora, Kirkos has finished
training: whole Party together again. Resupply for a
few days.
By now, Party have decided to try again to do something
about slavers' town; it is Puridian, and their emperor
is Vaklari - one of the Undead Lords. - so maybe this
will help Zxancs
somehow
|
| Y 20 |
A Dwarf approaches Runin (they are probably the only
two Dwarves in town); they start to chat. The new Dwarf,
Ori by name, seems interested in joining Party; but
Runin has other ideas and takes him out of town so they
can spar a bit. Problem is, he forgets to tell Ori this
is intended to be mere sparring; Ori thinks it's an
intentional attack and thus fights to kill - and wins!
Runin killed.
Ori loots Runin, returns to town, and turns himself
in to local authorities; they investigate and find Runin's
corpse.
Seriter recognizes Runin's corpse when he sees it being
brought in by constabulary, and alerts Party. Meanwhile,
Ori put in jail and relieved of Runin's possessions.
Claire casts Speak With Dead on Runin, he wants
to come back.
|
| Y 22 |
Runin raised. Ori promptly charges him with assault. |
| Y 24 |
Local Clerics and authorities hold what amounts to a
mini trial of both Ori and Runin. |
| Y 25 |
Judgement comes down: both are banned for life from
Qar'nora and its holdings, on pain of death if they
return.
Ori is escorted to the south border and leaves, so
Ori(F-3) retires before ever joining Party!
Runin is escorted to north border; Party accompanies,
then turn east to circumnavigate Qar'nora's lands.
|
| Y 29 |
Now in wilderness to east of Qar'nora, Party attacked
by a small group of Hagalen and some friends. Spells
fail all over the place: Kirkos summons an avatar of
Sif (!) who immediately gets fireballed by enemy; this
tells her whose side she's on so she lays waste to all
enemies, informs Party their companion awaits, and leaves.
Perseus loses yet another magic bow (his 4th) to this
same fireball.
Hagalen had a prisoner: Iost(F-3) joins once
Party free him.
Kirkos tries sacrificing enemy's weapons to Sif, no
obvious result.
|
| Y 30 |
Continue travelling cross-country, slowly. |
| Y 32 |
A Black Dragon attacks, it's hungry. Digger killed
by its first breath strike, but it otherwise doesn't do
much. Party stay put for a while, dissecting Dragon corpse. |
| Y 37 |
About half of Party take a detour into town of Anaish.
Kirkos gets some spells. Breary's father informed that
she is dead. |
| Y 38 |
Away team returns to Party, travel continues. |
| Quelle 3 |
Meet trail to what was Markessa's fortress. A long discussion
ensues on what to do next; out of this comes betrothal
of Chembri and Cassandra, Claire for some reason is very
eager to marry them. Decision is for all to head to boat. |
| Q 4 |
Arrive at docks - no boat! Seriter makes inquiries
with some of Brema's workers and learns it sailed for
the north about 10 days ago after people from a second
boat spoke to Party's crew.
Party decide to steal Brema's pleasure yacht instead;
but enough conscience takes hold that a charmed worker
is sent to fortress with a bag of gold as payment. Rest
of workers put to sleep, and Party's water-walkers tow
yacht out of harbour after dark.
|
| Q 5 |
Once at sea, Party now can't decide where to go - some
want to try the Slavers' Isle again, others want to
head south, and all are paranoid about fallout from
Brema. Discussion still ongoing around mid-day when
things suddenly get very dark

Nakkitou (11-0-0;1), Quelle 5-6
1084, January 2010
Background and summary: The Party suddenly find
themselves in a bizarre dungeon near an oddly-familiar (to
some) underground lake. Before long, they meet the real Nakki-Nakk
and learn all kinds of nasty things; but en route they meet
a card-pushing stoner who causes vast changes to many characters
- in particular Kirkos, who comes away ruined and is forced
to retire.
Starting members (from Slave Trail E):
Cassandra(NtC-5), Kirkos(MU-5), Perseus(F-5), Claire(NrC-5),
Chembri(WrC-4), Zxancs(F-4), Audun(B-4),

| Quelle 5
1084 |
Party, on a stolen boat, suddenly find themselves plunged
into darkness. Before anyone can do anything except
yell, boat gently runs aground on what turns out to
be a beach. Lots of people cast Light spells
and start exploring. Cassandra levitates upward and
finds a roof, informs Party they are in a cavern (!)
where moments before they had been on open ocean at
bright mid-day.
Chembri finds a narrow little stairway leading into
rock from beach, then a few Piercers drop on his head;
Kirkos tries to fireball the rest but there aren't any,
so all he hits are his own people.
Cassandra stays on boat (Chembri reluctantly joins
her), rest start to explore.
Find a brightly-lit "office", Party informed
by officious secretary that they must be "Robson's
4 o'clock" and they are early.
Kirkos wanders off, finds a dancing skeleton in one
direction and too many passages in the other, so returns.
Secretary eventually sends Party in (to somewhere),
they resume exploring.
Bump into a very stoned individual wandering the halls,
he wants to play cards and gets all sorts of takers,
but he is playing with a Deck of Many Things.
Lots of people pull lots of cards. Of significance:
o Runin changes
gender: Runin becomes Runa;
o a horn appears
in front of Perseus, he later uses it to summon a minor
Angel;
o a person shows
up and tasks Aisha "to save Poseidon's Damned",
whatever that means;
o Audun has to choose
between his Horn of Valhalla and Cassandra: one remains,
the other is forever destroyed. He chooses Cassandra,
and loses his Horn;
o various people
gain minor mostly-useful effects or have nothing happen
yet;
o Kirkos gets hammered.
He pulls a total of 7 cards (the 4 originally allowed,
plus 3 more allowed by the last one pulled of the 4).
A person appears and offers to trade him magic for life;
he agrees to a suit of +1 Elven Chain
and finds
himself suddenly 61 years old. He loses a level (to
MU-4). Audun has a sudden change of heart and becomes
Kirkos' best friend. 2 other cards look decidedly unpleasant
but have no immediate effect. And the last one costs
him his mind, setting his Int. Wis. and Cha. all to
3.
Party gently usher Kirkos back to the boat, take his
stuff, and leave him with Cassandra: Kirkos leaves.
Cassandra sends Chembri to join Party, who then resume
exploring.
Find and kill Happy the Turvitian, the resident torturer;
but this battle draws in some other local residents
so a long brawl ensues covering several rooms and chambers
at once. During this, a skeletal Bard appears; Party
annoy it, so it takes action: Chembri killed
by its sonic attack, and Runin almost. Bard then charms
Perseus and they leave, with Perseus' Angel dutifully
following after saving Runin's life.
Rest of Party mop up some Bugbears then Zxancs and
Seriter take Chembri's corpse and Pertalla (rescued
victim of Happy) back to ship while rest of Party disjointedly
go searching for Perseus.
Audun, Claire, Runin and Aisha sneak until they hear
voices; Claire sees Perseus in conversation with 2 skeletons,
and no Angel; when she reports this Runin charges into
room, then runs back out just as fast screaming in terror!
Rest of Party join Perseus; Perseus is soon sent to
find rest of Party, he scoops up now-recovered Runin
and they soon meet Zxancs and Seriter
and Cassandra,
now bored with looking after meat and vegetables on
ship. All to skeletons' throne room; a significant conversation
ensues:
o Skeleton on throne
is Nakki-Nakk - the real one as opposed to his many
decoys (one of which was destroyed in this
adventure) - he is one of the 5 Undead Lords;
o Party were brought
here by their ship - getting in and out of here seems
to be what it was made for, and Brema is in league with
Nakki and-or some of his staff;
o On learning Aisha
spent time with Kallios Nakki reads her mind, it seems
Nakki and Kallios don't get along;
o Nakki learns
Zxancs is quested to kill an Undead Lord; after assuring
her it will not be him, he mentions that he has already
destroyed Xangteng, that Saith has re-arisen somewhere,
and that he might know a way to get at Vaklari;
o Nakki admits
Party probably cannot kill Kallios; besides, Nakki's
reserving that pleasure for himself;
o The way to Vaklari
seems to start with Akasta, one of the slave lords in
Suderham where Party was just at;
o Aisha is also
given a bit of information about Poseidon's Damned,
who she is tasked with saving;
o Cassandra is
told to visit a Hecate temple regarding her baby;
o Nakki and the
skeletal Bard are very interested in Perseus' horn,
as summoning in theory does not work here;
o Eventually, Party
are let free but they are asked to leave Chembri's corpse
behind so Nakki can play with it.
All to ship via various routes; Audun stops by office
and carries secretary down hall while Aisha loots his
desk, Audun interrupted by arrival of a wizard so he
throws secretary at him and flees.
After a brief argument, decision is to keep Chembri's
corpse with Party; so they paddle out into darkness
and find themselves on open ocean at night in a stiff
breeze. Such stars as they can see look unfamiliar.
|
| Q 6 |
Morning arrives, Party have absolutely no idea where
they are; they sail east.
During night, Audun receives two visions; one true,
one false, both of great concern. Iost realizes he is
stronger.
|
| Q 7 |
By now, Party finally realize where they
are and start heading for port. |
| Q 10 |
Arrive Karnos.
A gang of men carrying large sacks walk down dock,
inform Aisha "We have your castle, where would
you like it?"; after some indecision she sends
them to a spot 5 miles east of Torcha. She follows,
but cannot find them.
Claire visits Hecate temple and gets Chembri raised.
Cassandra visits Hecate temple, then leaves for Torcha
much more slowly (and mostly ignores Chembri!).
Rest of Party spend a few days dividing treasury; a
major break follows.
|
| Q 11 |
Kirkos is put into long-term care in Karnos
and left there: Kirkos retires. |
| Q 13 |
Main Party starts heading for Torcha. |
| Q 15 |
Aisha arrives at Torcha, finds her castle already built
and with lots of locals giving it odd looks. She takes
possession and finds a deed making her Countess Alendra;
she starts hiring staff.
A bunch of familiar people are in town: Creon (they
bury some hatchets), Fjallarr, Drosa, Thimbus, and their
party are all hanging out at the Fallen Flagon.
|
| Q 18 |
Cassandra arrives at Torcha and takes up
residence in local Demeter temple: Cassandra retires.
(or so she claims; this retirement would last a surprisingly
short time) |
| Q 21 |
Main Party arrives at Torcha, many reunions
and introductions ensue. |
| Q 22 |
Creon takes pity on Runa; he has a Cloak of Change
Gender and uses it, so Runa becomes Runin
again at least for now.
Aisha invites everyone to her castle, reveals her new-found
peerage to all. She has already found a very competent
seneschal and the castle is coming together nicely (though
still has no furniture).
|
| Q 25 |
Out of all these characters, an adventuring
Company coalesces. Perseus finds 20 coins from Kallios'
reign and makes amulets out of them, gives one to each
of the 18 characters in town with the rest kept at the
Flagon. Meanwhile - and independently - Aisha has a silver
brooch made for each character, patterned with her coat
of arms. |
| Q 30 |
Amulets and brooches completed; their distribution
marks the founding of the Company
of Lightbringers.
|
| Q 31 |
Much discussion on what to do next: there's
too much needs doing for one group to handle, so party
divides in two. One group will go with Aisha to deal
with Poseidon's Damned, while the other will start working
on the Undead Lords
