Dafan Coinage

Back

This game runs on a currency system based on the silver piece. In the equipment list, and just about any other time prices of things are mentioned, amounts are in silver pieces (s.p. or sp) unless otherwise stated.

The common coins in use are as follows:

Bronze Piece (bp): a tiny coin about the size of a dime
Copper Piece (cp): bigger than a toonie, similar to the old-style British pennies, i.e. big and heavy
Silver Piece (sp): about the size of a quarter
Electrum Piece (ep): a gold-silver alloy, about the size of a toonie
Gold Piece (gp): about the size of a loonie but twice as heavy
Platinum Piece (pp): somewhat smaller than a loonie but heavier

Different countries have different exchange rates, but coin values usually relate to each other thus:

        1 cp = 4 bp
      1 sp = 12 cp = 48 bp
    1 ep = 6 sp = 72 cp = 288 bp
  1 gp = 2 ep = 12 sp = 144 cp = 576 bp
1 pp = 5 gp = 10 ep = 60 sp = 720 cp = 2880 bp

Weights: 1 pound represents about 100 bp, 20 cp, 50 sp, 20 ep, 25 gp, or 30 pp.

Paper money does not exist, and neither does the concept. IOUs and cheques do exist, on an ad-hoc basis.

Though there are local varieties and names of all coins, simplicity suggests using the above coinage as something of a common denominator. Coins are also sometimes split into somewhat uniform pieces, e.g. “pieces of eight”; the value of each piece is proportional to the split.
