Introduction - What Is A "Blue Book"?

The rules, such as they are, for the Victoria Rules game have somewhat by tradition become mostly contained in 4 binders; while each set of binders is somewhat unique to each campaign, all the sets are similar in a general sense.

These four main binders are in common parlance called the Blue Book, the Cleric Book, the Magic-User Book (or "Muser Book"), and the Red Book.

The Cleric Book contains write-ups on spells available to the various Cleric types, and also in some cases contains information on that campaign's pantheons and deities.

The Magic-User Book contains write-ups on spells available to Magic-Users, Illusioninsts, and Necromancers

The Blue Book (an example of which appears here) contains roll-up rules, equipment guides, race and class write-ups, level advancement tables, and a write-up on the cultures and peoples that might be found in the campaign world for which it has been written. The Blue Book also often contains maps of the campaign area for ease of reference.

The Red Book is the binder of assorted DM-eyes-only tables and charts including those for fumbles, magical herbs, wild-magic surges, weather, what happens when you are at negative hit points, and so forth. It also contains write-ups on home-grown magic items and rule systems e.g. ship-vs.-ship naval combat, Drow forehead gems, etc.; and on home-grown or amended monsters and-or races. In theory it also contains combat and save matrices but these are most often found nailed to the back of the DM's screen instead.

What Use Is Just A Blue Book?

Honestly, if you are looking to use Victoria Rules to run a game then just a Blue Book by itself is of severely limited use; you will need at least the basics of the Red Book as well, and as those will likely never be posted to any public forum (nosy players and all that) :) you'll have to ask for those to be sent privately. Spells can if needed be taken from the 1st-edition AD+D Players' Handbook or any similar source and modified as and when required; at some point we intend to have our spell write-ups posted here as well but there's no saying when that will occur.

Further, as you will see, much of any given Blue Book is very specific to the campaign for which it was written. This is intentional. For your own campaign you will have to make your own series of modifications to suit your game world, your campaign's racial makeup, and - let's face it - your own view of how the game should be run; and this process is in large part what makes your game yours and no-one else's.

If all goes well, a few more Blue Books from other campaigns will eventually find their way onto this site, to allow for comparison and give examples and ideas of how things have been/are being done differently in different campaigns.

So Why Post This At All?

Well, there's a few reasons...

The first and foremost is to give an idea of how Victoria Rules work, where and how they vary from other so-called "retro-clone D+D" game systems, and perhaps offer a glimpse of how our games work - if such can be gleaned from a rather dry book of rules and tables!

A second reason is this: if you are designing your own game system, we hope this represents one more fount of possible ideas; may it serve you well in this capacity.

And a third reason is very simple: now our own players have constant access to it!

Cheers!
